As the lovely May flowers bloom, I'm reminded why I enjoy this time of year so much. The rich colorful blossoms and their delicious fragrance makes it fun to be outdoors.

However, if you can't spend as much time as you like outside, it's nice to have a pleasant indoor space you can call your own. In this newsletter, our Feature Article outlines the steps of creating your own "Ma'am Cave," an oasis inside your home that is completely YOU. We have photos and a description of a ma'am cave we created for one of our happy customers in our Feature Project section. Looking for Mother's Day gift ideas? How about a promise to help Mom make her own ma'am cave?

Also, check out the newest Hunter Douglas "Celebration of Light" rebate promotion that is going on now through June 30.

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Did You Know...

...Many of our vendors carry sustainable and Earth-friendly products. Fabric companies are using "Green Guard Certified" fabrics to promote healthy air quality in our homes, and furniture manufacturers and flooring companies are using more sustainable woods, such as bamboo, to protect our forests. In honor of Earth Day, contact our studio for more information on how to "go green" with your home decor.

This loft was the ideal location for Karen to claim as her own special space. The staircase, which naturally divides the loft into two separate spaces, allows for one side to be used as an office, and the other side as a craft room. For the custom designed cornice-style treatment, we chose a luxurious embroidered faux-silk fabric in feminine pinks and creams. To complement the crystal chandeliers, the window treatment was bedazzled with crystal jewels to add sparkle and elegance.  Motorized Hunter Douglas Silhouette shades softly filter the sunlight, creating a soothing ambiance. Custom cabinetry organizes all of Karen's craft supplies, while the velvet-covered parson chairs, and a plush rug underfoot, add comfort to the office, and make this ma'am cave a true retreat.

The Ma'am Cave - A Place Of Her Own

We all deserve a retreat, a special happy place in which we can be embraced by the comfort of our favorite things. Why not carve out your own ma'am cave, and feel proud of it? After all, your guy has his man cave, and your kids have their playroom; it's only fair that you have your special space! (Note: This space should not be in the kitchen or laundry room!) Following are some tips to help you get started:
  • Pick a spot. A spare room is ideal, but if space is limited, consider claiming a corner of your master bedroom, or dividing another room.
  • Close it off. If your space isn't self-contained, use a folding room divider, curtain or even a two-sided bookshelf to separate it.
  • Choose your colors. Throw convention out the window! That is, unless you like conventional colors... This is your chance to expose and display your personality, whether it be energetic yellow and orange, relaxing blues and greens, or creativity-sparking (and Ravens!) purple.
  • Get comfy and cozy. Whether you use your space to get energized or to relax, you should be comfortable. Pick one big comfy chair to have upholstered in luxurious, soft chenille or similar fabric. Today's textures and patterns allow you unlimited choices to match your desires. Floor cushions offer an inexpensive and fun seating choice. A soft shag rug, which can be customized to match your colors, and coordinating window treatments will tie everything together.
  • Define your purpose. Decide the purpose of your ma'am cave. Is it for crafts, reading, wine-tasting, sewing or exercising? Whatever its purpose, make sure you have the necessary furnishings. These don't have to be expensive. You can find fabulous deals at consignment shops or church rummage sales.
  • Add personality. Make your ma'am cave your own by decorating with photos, art or travel souvenirs that you love. Use fabrics that reflect YOU. If space allows, use woven baskets, a storage ottoman or bookshelf to display or organize your favorite things. Have your rug or pillows monogrammed. If you're lucky enough to have your own room, the sky's the limit! How about putting in a fun window seat with bright throw pillows? Or if you have Christina Aguilera's budget, consider adding a pink pool table!
Now, take these tips and go to town! Make your own space in the world, and say "Yes Ma'am!" to your new ma'am cave.
