November 2014 - Executive Director Message
Nena McCullough and Sarah Clapp

"We can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks and ever thanks." William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

Here at Guide Dogs of the Desert, we are thankful all year, not just in November, for your generous support, and what you make possible.  During 2014, your gifts:
  • Sponsored 20 blind individuals now enjoy renewed mobility and independence with their custom trained guide dog

  •  Funded seven (7) new litters of puppies and their veterinary care

  • Provided for the dogs in the kennel with grooming and veterinary care

  • Assisted the follow-up support to the current teams who have graduated.

Our Community Business Partners, like Nena and Southern California Edison (pictured), are vital to the organization and we appreciate the support of all the local good business neighbors who lend us a helping hand.

Corporate Sponsors are a lifeline for Guide Dogs of the Desert . . . Natural Balance provides the dog food to the kennels and prints the calendar, and PetCo generously shares proceeds from their annual Helping Heroes fundraising campaign.

Together - individuals, foundations, community partners, service clubs and corporations - are instrumental in providing "20/20" vision for an individual who is blind/visually impaired with a custom trained guide dog.

On behalf of the Guide Dogs of the Desert Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers, our heartfelt best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.

NATURAL BALANCE

Dick Van Patten

When Dick Van Patten, founder of Natural Balance Dog Food, went "under blindfold" at Guide Dogs of the Desert, he was so
impressed by the intelligence and training of guide dogs, he went on to launch National Guide Dogs Month, recognized annually every September. He also pledged support to several guide dog schools throughout the nation.

Since 2008, Natural Balance has been a leading Corporate Sponsor for Guide Dogs of the Desert. Annually, they have supported the school with dog food for the kennels - and that saves the organization a lot in food expense. "Without the support of Natural Balance, our food costs would well exceed $200,000 per year," stated Trina Began, Director of Canine Operations. "We are truly grateful for their ongoing commitment to our guide dogs in training."

In addition to the contributed dog food, Natural Balance also underwrites the calendar produced each year. Many people look forward to the calendars being available, and Puppy Sponsors, Puppy Raisers and Graduates look forward to seeing who is featured each month.

Thank you, Natural Balance, for your partnership with Guide Dogs of the Desert. We truly value your trust, commitment and support to provide guide dogs for the blind, and those with special needs, for safe mobility, companionship and independence.

Congratulations to our Graduates!

October Graduation Group Shot
October Graduates

Thank you, all, for a successful four weeks, culminating in October 2014 Class Graduation Sunday, October 26th. The Palm Springs Air Museum stated we had well over 300 people in attendance.

We want to congratulate Dr. Carl Parish and Nelson, Yaeno White and Malaika, Tony Knight and Tillman, Jim Alford and Harlan, and Patti Ibholm and Dancer

The success starts with the Breeding Program, Canine Development - our awesome puppy raisers and volunteers -  segueing into the Training Department and Student Services support, along with the attentiveness of the Kennel Staff.  Administration Staff fills in with behind the scene support. Each and every person at Guide Dogs of the Desert has a role in the success of the "6 paws out the door" at graduation.

It is all made possible by the generous support of our donors - the truest lifeline of trust and confidence to invest in the organization - so we can provide custom trained guide dogs for the blind, and those with special needs. When our benefactors experience the result of all our efforts, it encourages continued support.

Your efforts are noticed and very much appreciated.

Guide Dog Team Spotlight
John Bolton and Leighton
John and Leighton
John and Leighton

My name is John Bolton I have Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and a hearing loss which is known as Usher Syndrome Three. I received my guide dog, a Labradoodle, from Guide Dogs of the Desert in 2010, and his name is Leighton. I am blessed to be married 42 years to my high school sweetheart, and we have 2 children and 7 grandchildren. I worked for the City of Glendale (Arizona) and, after retiring, Leighton and I continued attending city council meetings together. Leighton has helped me show city officials that being blind does not mean the visually impaired cannot live a full life - we just need a few accommodations to make anything possible.

Leighton and I appeared in a video showing how difficult it was for the disabled to maneuver around trash cans that was placed on city sidewalks in our neighborhood. When we brought this to the Glendale City Council in 2013, we were successful in changing the city code to remove these trash cans from the sidewalk. The new city code took effect January 1, 2014. Then Leighton and I appeared before the Peoria (Arizona) City Council and brought to their attention about the trash cans being placed on the sidewalks. In that city, trash pick-up is twice a week! After the Council viewed the video, Leighton and I trying to maneuver around more than 60 trash cans in just one city block, they agreed to change their city code to remove these trash can off the sidewalks and place the cans on the gutter side of the sidewalk. Peoria also has changed their code to begin February 1, 2015 to place the trash cans on the gutter side of the curb.

I personally believe that  all cities should change their codes in order to allow people who are visually impaired, those that are in wheelchairs, mothers pushing their infants in strollers as well as children walking to school, a safe sidewalk so that none would have to be in danger of walking in the street to avoid trash cans.

As many fellow blind/visually impaired individuals, I use a screen reader (JAWS 15) to access web information and recently tried to access various city and state websites, along with college web sites and found that these local web sites were not meeting state or section 508 guidelines.  Starting in 2013 I have filed a complaint with the State of Arizona to bring their web site up to standards. With the help of Arizona Disability Law we are drafting a letter of complaint. I know that changing codes and laws is a slow process, believe me it tries my patience.  I am just one man who saw a need, I want to encourage everyone to step out, speak up and let your voice and needs be heard.  One by one we can make changes.

Retired from the City of Glendale (Arizona), John continues to be a fighting advocate and example, finding every opportunity to showcase the need for reasonable accommodations and accessibility for those with disabilities. His determination and leadership is especially poignant during the National Disability Awareness Month.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips
November is an especially great month to get together with family and friends. Who does not love a great feast? The Thanksgiving holiday is my favorite holiday and a great time to remember all we have to be thankful for.

A lot of pet owners enjoy sharing in the festivities with their pets but keep in mind that what is good for us can be harmful or deadly to our four-legged friends.  If you are one that likes to give a little extra to your pet on Thanksgiving  then please do so out of their own food bowl instead of from the dining room table. Some great tidbits are listed below

- fresh apple slices
- fresh carrots
- a little chicken broth over their food.
- a few pieces of cooked turkey meat without all the seasonings.

Please do check with your veterinarian prior to adding anything to your pets diet especially if they are currently undergoing medical treatment for another medical concern.

Please avoid offering your pets cooked bones. Theses small bones become fragile once cooked and can splinter easily. This can cause intestinal damage of blockage. Avoid offering your pet seasoned food. Their digestive system can be sensitive and this can cause gastric upset and loose stool or vomiting.

Pay extra attention to where your pet is during the making and cleaning process. Pets are very quick to take off with something they should not have. Dogs have been known to pull an entire turkey off the counter. They are equally as clever if you throw the bones in the trash after the day is done. The clean up should be taken directly to an outside trash can and not left in the house where pets have easy access.

If you are hosting the gathering please make sure your pet has a safe place to go. Some of our pets are sensitive to change and larger gatherings of friends and children running about.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday!
