June 2014 - Executive Director Message
 | Sarah Clapp |
A lot of plans go into month-of-June events - promotions, graduations, Father's Day and weddings! And while the month of June is not the hottest, most sultry time of the summer, I also think of it as launching into the "dog days of summer." While those days are associated more with July and August, when the major star Sirius is at its brightest, things are heating up in the desert and we are more mindful about activity in the heat of the day and staying hydrated.
June is also a major planning month at Guide Dogs of the Desert. This is when the budget for next fiscal year is finalized, plans are set regarding the special events and fund raising efforts are put into motion that bring sustaining support to the school. And there is a lot of activity still happening at the campus - puppies arriving to be delivered to their foster homes, dogs brought back for their formal training for clients next fall/winter/spring, and training staff is busy in the "cooler cities" of Southern California, training the dogs.
Your generous, ongoing support - even during these "dog days of summer" - is especially appreciated. As you can imagine, with the puppies and dogs at the kennels, the special training consistently taking place, some in-home placements for recurring clients - it is the financial assistance from our many friends at this time of year that provides sustaining funds during the "dog days of summer."
We are indebted to YOU - our FRIENDS - for your confidence in this organization that turns puppies into guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired.

Graduate Spotlight
Chris Anguiano resides in San Marcos, California. His guide, Paullie, is a male, black Labrador Retriever, born on March 27, 2011 and is dual trained for guide and balance service. Chris and Paullie graduated in May, 2014.
"Getting Paullie is a new beginning for me. We bonded quickly. I feel like the dog really knows me and that he was made for me.
It is really calming for me when he lays on top of my feet. Paullie also gives me a sense of security - like he is watching out for me. We are a Team for Life!" - Chris Anguiano.

Pinot for Paws was a Great Success!
Debbie Davis and her committee created a fun new event and what a magnificent time we all had! Thank you Terry and Neil Barker for the use of your lovely home. There was delicious wine from Solano's Restaurant of La Quinta, ice cream from Ben & Jerry's and hors d'oeuvres from Nicolinos.
We had a terrific auction of puppy art by Rawfbrandt, Van Dogh and Pawcasso. We were all delighted when our auctioneer, Gary Jeandron ended up in the swimming pool to help raise an extra $400.00 for Guide Dogs of the Desert!
What a wonderful time for everyone - and we raised over $10,000! Thank you to everyone who helped us create such a terrific event!
A special thank you to the generous Pinot for Paws Committee supporters:

A Memorial Day Tribute to War Dogs
On Memorial Day, Americans will visit war memorials in cities and towns across the country. This annual ritual helps us connect to the brave members of the military who defended our freedom in past conflicts. There is one memorial, however, that is quite unique, because the fallen veterans it honors had four legs. This is the U.S. War Dog Memorial in Holmdel, New Jersey. When you learn about the countless acts of selfless courage and total loyalty that "dogs of war" have displayed in battles around the world, it seems very fitting that there is at least one official memorial. |
Trina's June TipsTeaching Your Dog How to Behave Around ChildrenBy the ASPCA

It's amazing, if you think about it, that dogs get along with children as well as they do. Many seem to understand that kids should be treated differently, with gentleness and tolerance. When interacting with children, these dogs patiently put up with all kinds of strange, unpredictable behavior and sometimes even painful handling. This ability to enjoy the company of kids, despite rough treatment, has made the dog a popular family pet. Most dogs end up bonding strongly with the children in their family, becoming both friend and protector, and the love between a child and a dog is a truly wonderful thing to behold.
Some dogs, however, have trouble interacting with kids-and when a dog doesn't get along with young family members, the consequences can be devastating. Although dog bite fatalities are extremely rare and most bites don't result in injury or medical treatment, children are the victims of half of the estimated 4.7 million dog bites in the United States every year. One study estimates that about a third of these bites are delivered by the family dog. Dogs often bite children on the face or neck, and these bites sometimes result in permanent scarring or disfigurement. Irrevocable emotional damage is often done as well. Many parents consider any tooth-to-skin contact with a child a major breach of trust-perhaps even grounds for euthanasia-and some people develop lifelong phobias of dogs after being bitten during childhood.
The experience of living with a family dog shouldn't be traumatic for children. Likewise, living with children shouldn't be traumatic for a dog. Fostering good relationships benefits everyone in the family, canine and human alike. With proper guidance and supervision, you can help your dog and your kids develop safe, fulfilling friendships.
