Please welcome our new Executive Director!
I wanted to share some terrific news with all of you for Guide Dogs of the Desert. As many of you might know, when Roccie retired, the board asked me to take the position of interim Executive Director for a period of one year or, until we found another person to take over as ED. Well, we have hired an Executive Director!

Sarah G. Clapp
|
Sarah G. Clapp, who is a long time resident of the Coachella Valley, has enthusiastically accepted this position. She has an extensive background in fundraising, policies and procedures and budgets. She has worked for Eisenhower Medical Center in the Major Gifts arena for 20+ years, and Make-a-Wish Foundation as a Director of Fundraising on the Western seaboard. Most recently, Sarah was Development Director for The Living Desert.
Sarah and her daughter were puppy raisers for GDD about 20 years ago. They raised a golden retriever named Jake who graduated. Sarah and her daughter were also very much involved with Guide Dogs of the Desert through the National Charity League.
Sarah is married, has one daughter and one grandson, and has an adorable rescue dog named Buttons! The board and staff would like you to welcome Sarah to the team. She will be joining us on Monday, August 26, 2013.
I will resume my duties as Deputy Executive Director, working with Sarah, and continuing my work with fundraising, community outreach, events, grant writing, PR and marketing once she comes on board.
Thank you for your support of Guide Dogs of the Desert and for your commitment to providing custom trained guide dogs to individuals who are blind. Because of you, we can provide this life-changing service.
Onward and upward, Kim Laidlaw

SUMMER BLOW OUT HARNESS SALE!
A guide dog needs the proper uniform to safely and effectively communicate and lead a person who is blind. Proper equipment is a harness, leash, and two collars for the dog. There has been a cost increase effective September, 1, 2013 to $600 for the equipment package.
During the month of August we are having a blow out sale at the old price of $500 -
BUT WAIT... If you act now, you can sponsor the above equipment for $450. Please contact Patti Wheeler at pwheeler@gddca.org or 760-413-4442, if you would like to donate toward the equipment of our guide dogs! We are anticipating that we will need equipment for 25-30 dogs this year!

Summer Concerns for your Pet
Outdoor barbecues and summertime go hand in hand, but many of us may not realize some of the inherent dangers for pets when it comes to grilling. The following points are important to consider when it comes to keeping your pet safe this summer: Tasty Temptation There's nothing quite like the alluring smell of meat cooking on the grill, and that goes double for your pet. It's always a great idea to keep your pets out of the area you're cooking in for their safety. Hot coals, hot grills and inquisitive pets are a dangerous combination and it's always best to have your grill attended at all times to prevent any accidents. No Bones About It Many of us love a good T-bone steak or chicken on the grill and your furry friends are no exception. However, just because we won't eat the bones doesn't mean they won't try. Fractured teeth, airway obstructions, and gastrointestinal complications from splintered bones are all very real dangers to your pet. So it's always a good idea to clear your plates when meal time is over and dispose of any bones in a tightly sealed, and pet-proofed trash receptacle. Made in the Shade With summer comes higher temperatures, and while it's easy for us to throw on a pair of shorts, your dogs don't have the luxury of losing their thick coats. Make sure your pets have access to shady areas or are able to go inside to cool off. Having a spare water bowl outside with some ice cubes in it is another great way to help them stay cool and enjoy their time with you outdoors. Heat stroke can be fatal and is easily prevented with a few simple precautions. Food for Thought We all know the puppy dog eyes can be a lot to resist, but sharing human foods with your dog poses some safety risks. There are several foods commonly found at barbecues and picnics that should be avoided by dogs - raw onions, avocados, dairy products, grapes and certain nuts are just a few food items that can not only leave your pet feeling lousy, but can be potentially toxic as well.
