101 New Chamber Members Help #UniteRoane

From L-R: Chamber Ambassador and Board Member, Marilyn Calfee, team captain for the winning team 'Marilyns Maniacs and Chamber Board Chair, Gail Lyke from "Gails Go Getters"

The Membership Expansion event that was a culmination of a six-week contest to help #UniteRoane and a two-day Membership Drive was a huge success. Just during the two-day drive, a total of 101 new members were added to the membership, representing a 27% increase in the membership and a record for the consulting company that directed the event.

"Last Thursday we started the day with 365 members, and to end the week with 466 members is difficult to fathom," said Chamber President Wade Creswell, The Roane Alliance.  "We had more than 50 board members, ambassadors and volunteers help drive this campaign - and they knocked it out of the park!  I want to say a special thank you to the two team leaders, Marilyn Calfee - Marilyn''s Maniacs, and Gail Lyke - Gail's Go Getters."

Ambassador Christy Brown, Griffin Insurance
Chamber Board Chair, Gail Lyke, First Bank of Tennessee, Rockwood

100 new members in two days was the goal for the campaign, led by Annette Medlin, a Membership Development consultant enlisted to provide guidance and her experience in not only expanding membership but more importantly amplifying the Chamber message to Roane County.

Ambassador Christy Brown, Griffin Insurance, recruited the most new members (nine) during the two-day expansion event, receving a $100  gift card and a $150 gift certificate donated by Gloria Jeans Southern Provisions Restaurant in Kingston. Chamber Board Chair Gail Lyke, First Bank of Tennessee, Rockwood, came in second place, recruiting eight new members and receiving a $50 gift card.  The winner of the photo contest was Coldwell Banker, Jim Henry & Associates, receiving a $50 gift card for receiving the most likes for their #UniteRoane photo on the Chamber's social media pages.

The winner of the #uniteroane photo contest and a $50 gift card was Coldwell Banker, Jim Henry & Associates, based on the most likes on the Chamber's social media pages
In addition, there were many donors that helped make this such a successful event.  Thank you: Alice's Restaurant, Annie's Catering, Bojangles, Caramella's Catering, Gloria Jeans Southern Provisions, Hardee's Restaurant, Leadership Roane County, Norwex, Ruth King, Oak Ridge Utility District, Roane Street Grill, Rosemary's FloristSimply Sweet Bakery, Subway in Kingston, and The Tee Spot.

"Increasing the membership allows the Chamber to not only provide more services to its members," said Chamber Director Paulette Ray.   "But probably even more importantly creates

a 'community'  where members can stay on top of important, ever-changing issues and trends within their community and local marketplace," added Ray.  "The main focus of this membership expansion event has always been to bring Roane County individuals, businesses, and industry together to create a united front

Decorate your store front with the #uniteroane logo and you may win $250!

so Roane County can thrive.  Now it's the Chamber's job to continue the momentum and keep Roane united."

And to help keep the momentum, the Chamber is continuing the #uniteroane campaign through the summer - this time focusing on Roane County businesses.  Businesses are encouraged to decorate their store front with the #uniteroane logo - be creative and your business could win $250!  The Chamber is encouraging businesses to wear #UniteRoane t-shirts every Friday to help spread the word that we can do more together if we #UniteRoane.  Tshirts are available for FREE at The Roane Alliance Monday through Friday 8

am to 5 pm.  The campaign will end August 31 so start decorating! For contest rules click here.

For more information on how you can get involved in the #UniteRoane campaign and help support the growth of business in and around Roane County, contact the Chamber at 865-376-5572 or email chamber@roanealliance.org.

May Receives Tourism Award

The Middle East Tennessee Tourism Council (METTC) presented Pam May, The Roane Alliance's Director of Tourism, the 2015 Chuck Davis Tourism Award at a recent banquet.  The award is in honor of a long-time regional tourism leader who was the founding chairman of the East Tennessee Crossing Byway.  Davis' energy, intelligence and sense of humor made him an outstanding leader in the Tourism Industry in East Tennessee.  Davis passed away in 2006, but his legacy serves as an example of leadership to our regional Chambers and Convention and Visitors Bureaus.

The Middle East Tennessee Tourism Council was established in 1980 to jointly market tourism in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Sevier, Scott and Union Counties.

Chamber Ambassador of the Month

Christy Brown, from Griffin Insurance, is July's Chamber Ambassador of the month.  She has been with Griffin Insurance for 9 years and in the Insurance business for 13 years.  She is currently the Retention Manager and she handles the marketing and most of the accounting for the agency.  In 2007 she obtained the Certified Insurance Service designation (CISR). "My favorite part of being a Chamber Ambassador is feeling like an integral part of the business community. I also enjoy continually discovering new businesses that I may have never known about without the Ambassador opportunity. Being an Ambassador is an excellent way to get involved with the community and has given me the opportunity to connect with many great people.' says Christy.  Christy loves traveling and watching her

son play baseball and her daughter play basketball and she currently resides in Kingston and recently got engaged.

Our next Chamber Cash Mob will be at Live & Let Live Drugstore located at 225 W. Rockwood St., Rockwood on Thursday, August 13, 12 - 2 pm.  Live & Let Live is the third business that has been "mobbed" by the Roane County Chamber of Commerce.

Cash Mobs are flash mobs, but instead of singing and dancing we spend money as a group! We target the small, local businesses that make each community special in order to give the business owners an economic stimulus. It's simple, we invite as many people as possible to mob a local business and encourage them to spend at least $20 or more while there.  So spread the word and join us as we "mob" Live & Let Live Drugs of Rockwood.  To join our facebook event page click here.

Leadership Roane County Update
Leadership Roane County Visits Nashville

June was a very busy month for the Leadership Roane County Class of 2015.  On June 10, the class enjoyed their last session of the year and learned about Economic Development in Roane County.  Their day started in the newly renovated Roane Alliance board room room where they were greeted by Roane Alliance President, Wade Creswell.  He gave an overview of their day and explained the ins and outs of economic development and its impact on the county.  The morning continued with information from Mr. Gary Human, Mr. Andy Lawson, Mr. Allen Lutz, Ms. Danice Turpin, and Ms. Kim Harris.  The group then traveled to the Roane County Industrial Park in Rockwood for tours and information at Sauter Timber and the Roane Academy.  The class then enjoyed another wonderful lunch at Gloria Jean's Fine Southern Provisions and heard from Ms. Pam May, Ms. Paulette Ray, and Ms. Lindsey Stevens from the Roane Alliance.  After lunch the group continued their bus tour of the Horizon and Heritage Centers and then on to the Roane Regional Business and Technology Park where they toured Proton Power, Dienamic Tooling Systems, and Volkswagen.  The class learned much during this eventful day.

The Leadership Class of 2015 chose to do a BBQ Fundraiser to benefit Round About Roane for their project.  The participants in the class sold tickets for $10 each and then on Monday, June 15, they boxed, labeled, and delivered the meals they had sold.  The goal was to raise $2,000 for this organization but with the determination of this class they exceeded that and raised over $3,500 for the Round About Roane program.  Great job!!

The Leadership Roane County Class of 2015 came together on Thursday, June 18, at Whitestone Country Inn for their graduation ceremony.  Despite the fact that the power went out only a few minutes into dinner and remained off the rest of the evening, the participants had an enjoyable evening.  The guest speaker for the event was Dr. Dale Henry who did an awesome job, as always. The 2014 recipient of the Paul E. Goldberg award, Jude Miller, Active Family Chiropractic, presented to the 2015 winner Bobby Collier for his tireless efforts with the Operation R.E.A.C.H.  The certificates were handed out and thus ended another great year with Leadership Roane County.  Congratulations to the LRC Class of 2015!

Eva Graves was one of the original members of the Roane County Anti-Drug Coalition.  Eva was a tremendous advocate for substance abuse prevention in our county.  Each year the coalition presents the Eva Graves Award to someone from the community who best exemplifies Eva's advocacy efforts.

Marilyn Calfee was chosen to receive the 2015 Eva Graves Award.  Marilyn publicly supports the Coalition and continuously promotes substance abuse prevention efforts in Roane County.  Marilyn is a community champion who enlists the support of others and helps mobilize the community to increase awareness and to help make Roane County a great place to live.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam presented a check to Mayor Mike Miller for $437,122.00 from a TDOT Grant for Tom Fuller Park Friday morning, August 19.  To watch the presentation by Governor Bill Haslam click here.  (Video provided by Bill Anderson)

Congratulations Roane County Recycling Center! Thursday, June 4, Ralph Stewart, Director and Joyce Nall, Administrative Assistant, accepted an award from the East Tennessee Development District during an awards dinner at Rothchilds. Per ETDD Executive Director Terry Bobrowski, the county was recognized because of its commitment "to making itself the regional leader of solid waste recycling by operating a state of the art recycling facility and recently acquiring a heavy duty bailing machine that increases its capacity to accept & process recyclable material, not just within its boundaries but from other counties as well."
