One topic that does not get much attention through Chamber communications is how the Roane Alliance recruits new business to come to Roane County. That doesn't mean that it isn't important or that we aren't very focused on recruitment. The purpose of our Chamber communications is to shine a light on our members in an effort to help them be successful and grow.

But, we are very aware that the growth of our communities is the best thing that could happen for most of our businesses. Through the leadership of the Roane County Industrial Development Board, our staff is working constantly to develop sites, coordinate the development of infrastructure, build partnerships, and ultimately market Roane County to companies worldwide to grow our economy in a planned and controlled method.

One recent highlight of our efforts was a visit by the state Commissioner of Economic and Community Development, Randy Boyd, and his senior staff to industrial sites that we are working to develop further. Commissioner Boyd visited our Select Tennessee Certified site at Roane Regional Business and Technology Park, in addition to another Roane County certified site at the Horizon Center in Oak Ridge.  Roane County has three Select Tennessee certified sites making it the only rural county in the state with such an inventory of prime sites that have been thoroughly vetted by a state certification process.

When I get a chance to speak to groups in the community it isn't uncommon to encounter a sense of pessimism with the direction of our economy.  But, I am here to tell you that perspective is not accurate. The future is bright for our county for new prospects and for our existing companies.   Last year, Roane County netted over 200 new jobs in the industrial sector alone.  My optimism is bolstered by a belief I have that Roane County may be entering a new era of cooperation across city and county lines. Regionalism, both within the county and with our partners in neighboring counties, is absolutely critical to the Roane Alliance's ability to bring new business to Roane County.  Please join us in spreading our message that we truly are 'Better Together.'

Sincerely,

Wade Creswell

State & Local Agendas Presented to Officials

The Roane County Chamber hosted their annual legislative breakfast on January 12 at Roane State Community College to a packed crowd of Chamber members, local officials, and media.

Both the format of the meeting and the legislative agenda were different this year that also included a local government agenda.  The Roane County Chamber Board of Directors and the Community Development Committee presented each agenda focusing on three key points outlined in each.

State Senator Ken Yager and State Representative Kent Calfee attended, along with local officials - Roane County Executive Ron Woody, Kingston City Mayor Tim Neal and Harriman City Mayor Chris Mason.  Each were given an opportunity to address the legislative agendas to the crowd.

To view both agendas visit the Chamber's website or contact the Chamber at 865-376-5572 or chamber@roanealliance.org.

Exciting NEW Programs Coming in 2015!
Cash Mobs are coming to Roane County!  The Chamber is introducing this program in 2015 beginning on Thursday, February 12 when Simply Sweet Bakery will be mobbed from 5:30 - 7 pm.  Simply Sweet is located at 431 N. Roane Street, Harriman.

Similar to flash mobs, but without singing and dancing, cash mobs bring customers in to spend money at small, local businesses that make each community special.  In hopes to give the business owners an economic stimulus, attendees are encouraged to spend at least $20 during the event.

Chamber members in good standing will be chosen by a random drawing by the Chamber Ambassador team each quarter and the date and location will be announced on Facebook and in the newsletter.  Stay tuned for each cash mob - it could be coming to your business!  To learn more about this upcoming event visit the Chamber Facebook page or to learn more about Simply Sweet Bakery click here.

Another new program in 2015 - Chamber Business of the Month - and the first business selected is Old Castle Adams Building Products located at 600 Cardiff Valley Road in Rockwood.  The presentation at their location will be held at noon on Friday, February 6.

Chamber members in good standing will be randomly drawn to be featured as the 'Chamber Business of the Month,' receiving a plaque along with a large banner that will be displayed in front of their business.  The Chamber will be announcing each business selected on the website, social media, Chamber weekly update and a feature article in our monthly newsletter.   Glenda Johnson, Coldwell Banker, Kingston is the official sponsor of the program.
At noon on Wednesday, February 11, the Chamber will hold a Chamber Membership Orientation for current, new and prospective chamber members to help members benefit more from their membership in hopes it helps their business grow. The orientation will cover the new Tiered Dues Benefit Structure, member benefits and the day-to-day operations of the Roane Alliance. Wade Creswell, CEO/President of the Roane Alliance, along with Paulette Ray, Director of Chamber Operations and Lindsey Stevens, Chamber Membership Coordinator, will be presenting the material.

The orientation will be held at the Roane Alliance, 1209 N. Kentucky Street in Kingston. Lunch will be provided so RSVP is required by contacting Paulette Ray at 865-376-5572 or chamber@roanealliance.org. Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about taking advantage of your Chamber membership in 2015! The orientation will not be held again until Wednesday, June 10 or Wednesday, October 14 (both at noon).

The Workforce Development Council (WDC) will be meeting on February 12 to focus on the workforce needs of Roane County businesses.   Representatives from Roane County Schools, Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Harriman, Roane State Community College, King University, and the Roane Alliance will meet with leaders and human resource representatives of Roane County Businesses.

A wide variety of businesses are participating in the meeting and will provide information about their workforce needs in enough detail so our educators can explore ideas and actions to meet their needs. The ideas and actions can be both short and long-term.

Business interviews conducted in July and August with manufacturing companies identified workforce requirements which included career awareness by educators and students, as well as soft and hard skills of the future workforce.  In October 2014, an initial WDC action had educators visit three Roane County manufacturing companies. As a result of these visits, we have begun to increase student cooperative education opportunities with local businesses.

If you would like to know more about the WDC, the meeting on February 12, or if your business is interested in learning more about co-op opportunities with high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) students, please contact Allen Lutz, Workforce and Development Specialist, with the Roane Alliance at alutz@RoaneAlliance.org or (865) 376-2093.

HG Furniture Co. Chamber Reception

After 51 years of owning HG Furniture Co. and 30 years of Chamber membership, James "Dub" Harmon will be closing his doors.  The Chamber hosted a special coffee to recognize Harmon's many years of service to Harriman and The Roane County Chamber of Commerce.  Several were on hand to show their gratitude to all that Harmon has done for his community not just as a business owner, but for his 22 years of service as County Commissioner.  Once retired, Harmon plans to remain active in his church and community.

Ambassador Team Update
Chamber Ambassador Team Working Hard In 2015

Chamber Ambassadors were hard at work this month, planning the new events in 2015 -
Cash Mobs, Chamber Business of the Month, Chamber Liaison Program, and Chamber Membership Orientation.  Random drawings were held and videotaped for the first winners for Business of the Month and Cash Mob (click each to view or visit the Chamber's Facebook page where they were uploaded).  The ambassador team also discussed creating a new event to replace the annual Home and Garden Show that will not be held this year.  A date for the new event will be announced soon for 2016.  Dana Peterka also attended the meeting to present the Chamber's Lunch & Learn Workshop schedule for the year, with suggestions on how to better promote the series to our members.

The Ambassadors meet the first Tuesday of every month.   If you are interested in joining the Ambassador team please contact Paulette Ray at 865-376-5572 or chamber@roanealliance.org.  To RSVP to our next Chamber Ambassador team meeting click here.

Congratulations to Roger Parker for being the February Ambassador of the Month!

"Being a part of the Chamber and being an Ambassador has helped me learn more about the community in which I live and serve," said Roger Parker, Renaissance Terrace.  "It has also taught me how important it is for local businesses to support each another - like a family supports one another.  The Roane Chamber is a very integral part of the County's ability to move forward and it has to have the support of the people and local businesses to be successful.  I am proud to be a part of that effort."

Parker has worked as the administrator of Renaissance Terrace in Harriman for three years.  He grew up in Johnson City and served as Deputy Sheriff there for seven years.  Roger served four years active duty in the Army and another four years in the Reserve and National Guard, and has served two military campaigns - Granada in '83 and Desert Shield/Storm in '91 before going back to school at East Tennessee State University where he received his Bachelor of Science Public Health.  Parker currently resides in Kingston with his wife and five children.
The Roane County Green Team met on January 21, at the Roane Alliance in Kingston, to draft a strategic plan to identify goals and strategies for the three components of the team, which are Litter Pick-up, Education and Enforcement. The main goal is to make Roane County the cleanest county in the state.

The Green Team will hold another meeting in the next couple of months to finalize the strategic plan.

If interested in becoming a part of the Green Team, contact Teresa Jackson at 865-376-5547 or tjackson@roanealliance.org. For more information concerning the Roane County Green Team click here or like our facebook page.

The Roane County High School Career Day will be held on April 2 at Roane State Community College, marking its seventh year.  Businesses are encouraged to participate. The Career Day introduces students to careers and educational opportunities while businesses have the opportunity to encourage and meet their potential future workforce.  Since 2009, approximately 2,850 juniors have attended the Career Day, while the number of businesses participating has increased from 35 in 2009 to nearly 60 in 2014.  For more information contact Allen Lutz at 865-376-2093 or alutz@roanealliance.org.
The Chamber/SCORE Lunch & Learn Workshop series 2015 class schedule is now available - just a click away.
