Chamber Board Supports Marketplace Fairness Act

The Roane County Chamber of Commerce Board voted unanimously at June's board meeting to support the Marketplace Fairness Act - an act that empowers states to collect sales tax on purchases made from online-only vendors.

The Chairman of the Government Relations Committee, Edgar "Buddy" Bowers, said in bringing the resolution to the Chamber board: "The growth of online sales has created an increasingly unfair burden on local merchants, who find themselves competing with outside vendors who do not have to collect Tennessee sales tax from local customers.  Moreover, it has created a growing burden on our state and local governments who lose such taxes from which they would otherwise benefit."

"Our mission as a Chamber of Commerce is to represent and support local businesses, such as our merchants, and eliminating this 'online tax unfairness' should be an effort we all support.  None of us particularly likes to pay taxes, I'm sure, but we should all desire a level playing field in commerce."

Roane Vying for Sustainable Certification

Roane County was one of only 13 communities in the Tennessee Valley to go through a TVA team evaluation to become certified a 'Sustainable Community.'

The process kicked off on June 7 at The Roane Alliance with Boyette Strategic Advisors (BSA) talking with Chamber businesses and leaders at a roundtable discussion.  Chamber members who participated include:
Perma-fix, Oak Ridge National Lab, City of Kingston, Whitestone Country Inn, Proton Power, City of Harriman, Roane County Schools, Roane County Solid Waste, Harriman Utility Board, Michael Dunn Center, City of Rockwood, Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman, Rockwood Electric Utility, Roane State Community College, and
TVA.

"Roane County has already made a significant commitment to sustainability, which was seen by the turnout for the kickoff, as well as the astounding list of sustainable efforts already being done. This new program provides us with the opportunity to document, further develop and be recognized for our sustainable initiatives, which will help differentiate us in the tough competition for new investment and job creation," said Leslie Henderson, President/CEO, The Roane Alliance.

Luncheon Features Legislative Review

The Chamber held a special Speaker Series luncheon in June, inviting State Senator Ken Yager and Representative Kent Calfee to talk about this year's legislative session.

Senator Yager spoke about education and the changes coming - as well as some of the work being done on legislation on prescription drugs.

Representative Calfee announced that Tennessee was #3 in the nation for their highways and based in part on being debt free, and has been named best managed State in the country.  Some other topics he touched on included: reducing the tax on food, raising the exemption on the Halls Tax, increasing pay for State Troopers (ours are the lowest paid in the nation), and ECD's work in attracting new business.

Chamber Members Celebrate
Bojangles Grand Opening

It really was "Bo Time" at Bojangles Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting Event.  Bojangles rolled out the red carpet for Roane County in a big way with a kid's area that featured a bounce house, games and a very talented face painter.  The fun didn't stop there with their mascot "Bo" inside posing for pictures with guests, door prizes and of course lots of good food. Roane County Chamber members and the area residents came out to fill the lobby and parking lot welcoming this new business to the community.  The new store is located at 1917 Roane State Highway, Harriman.

Alpha Bitz is located at 5110 Harriman Highway, Oliver Springs.

Harriman City Opens Downtown Doors For Prospects

David Gunther, Harriman Industrial Board, speaks with a prospect during the event
The City of Harriman put on display 14 available properties in the downtown district in hopes that offers would be made by prospective businesses.  Many came out to view the available buildings and got a first-hand glimpse during the historic event.  Harriman City leaders, local businesses, and The Roane Alliance all worked together to make the event a success and "it showed...well," said Darrell Williams, of The Roane Alliance.

Leadership Roane County Graduates Class of '13

The Chamber's Leadership Roane County latest class held their graduation on June 20 at Whitestone Country Inn.  Mike Keith, "The Voice of the Titans," was guest speaker, providing many humorous stories about his years (from the very beginning) with the Titans. Teresa Duncan, Roane State Community College - which co-sponsors the Leadership program - handed out certificates to all the graduates along with special awards such as the 'Forest Gump' award, making an enjoyable evening for class members and alumni who attended.
Knoxville TVA Credit Union Celebrates New Offices

The Knoxville TVA Credit Union hosted their Grand Opening - Ribbon Cutting for their new facility at 1916 Roane State Highway, Harriman on June 21.   This new concept design facility was viewed by a large crowd of Chamber members, state and local officials and many of their customers while enjoying refreshments and entering for their chance at the door prizes being given away at the event.  The new spacious, open reception area welcomes customers and this new facility even includes a children's area that features a mural of the Kingston Bridge.  Knoxville TVA President Glenn Siler spoke at the event and led the ribbon cutting of the money ribbon.

Rep. Calfee Brings State Comptroller Wilson to Chamber

comptroller The Tennessee State Comptroller Justin Wilson met with Chamber members during a 'coffee' meet and greet on June 28 at The Roane Alliance. State Rep. Kent Calfee arranged the visit to Roane County along with breakfast as part of a day-long "whistle-stop" tour.  Wilson provided a lively discussion about his duties and work as comptroller, taking questions from those attending.  The comptroller is a constitutional officer elected by the General Assembly for a term of two years. State statutes prescribe his duties, the most important of which relate to audit of state and local government entities, and participation in the general financial and administrative management of state government.
Roane's Highway Department Hosts Special Luncheon

A celebration lunch at the Roane County Highway Department was held on June 27 to honor retirees Larry Alford, Judy Bensey, Joe Britton, Donna Patterson, and Ronnie Turpin. The memory of former Road Superintendent Charlie Norman was also honored.  Bluegrass sensation Outta the Blue provided the lively entertainment while the highway department employees served guests with hamburgers, hotdogs and watermelon.

Rockwood Electric Utility, a member of the American Public Power Association (APPA), has received the Platinum Level for 2012-2014 from this association for demonstrating
high proficiency in four areas: reliability, safety, work force development and system improvement. A service organization for over 2,000 community-owned electric utilities in the US, APPA's Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) program recognizes utilities that demonstrate sound business practices and industry best practices. There are only 15 municipal utilities in Tennessee that have received this recognition. REU is already working on the application for next time which is due September 30, 2013.

Harriman Public Library honored TVA for their financial assistance at a reception on June 17. Harriman City Mayor Chris Mason spoke at the event and presented a plaque to TVA representatives Bob Morris and Bert Robinson. TVA's contribution provided the funds to complete many improvements to the library including wiring, installation of period lighting, carpet, new office space and new computers.

The City of Kingston announced two 'solar farms' planned within the city limits.  The Kingston Water Plant will be the site of the first one, breaking ground in May.  This site will provide a generating capacity rate of approximately 50kWdc, while the 2nd site off James Ferry Rd near the plant will generate 200kw - generating the equivalent of enough electrical power to operate the water treatment plant.  This is part of an approval from TVA, placing Roane County in the top four counties in the state providing solar power when completed.  The city's drive to move ahead on these and other energy-saving projects has earned them the Tennessee Municipal League's Small City Progress Award.
L-r: John Byrkit, Kingston City Council; Don White, Kingston City Council; Mayor Troy Beets, Kingston City; Ken Wilber, Tennessee Municipal League; Tony Brown, Kingston City Council; Manager David Bolling, Kingston City; and Norman Sugarman, Kingston City Council
