A nagging knee injury. Pain in your hip that comes and goes. Should you see a doctor or just wait it out? Please continue reading to learn more:
Sports Injury: Should You See A Doctor?

"A question we get asked all the time is when to see a doctor about a sports injury," says Dr. Alan Posta of Carolina Orthopaedic Center. "Ultimately, only you can answer that question. While some want to give a minor injury a while to see if it will heal on its own, there may come a point when the pain or lack of function is just too much."

At-Home Treatment

If you want to wait to see a doctor, treat a sports injury with ice and a combination of anti-inflammatory NSAID medication (Advil, Aleve) combined with a pain reliever like Tylenol. If several weeks go by and the pain doesn't get better, it hurts so much you can't sleep, or if you can't walk on the leg/move the shoulder, it's time to see a doctor.

Which Kind of Doctor?

Orthopedic physicians and surgeons treat musculoskeletal problems, and there are several different types. Many orthopedic surgeons have additional training in specialties like Sports Medicine Surgery, Foot and Ankle Surgery, Shoulder and Upper Extremity Surgery, Hand Surgery, Joint Replacement or Spine Surgery. While these doctors are surgeons, seeing them doesn't necessarily mean you need to have surgery. They can provide non-operative treatment - like injections or physical therapy referrals - for injuries that do not need immediate surgical repair.

There also are orthopedic physicians who are not surgeons. They are usually trained as family practice physicians with additional training in non-operative Sports Medicine. They can treat sports injuries not requiring surgery as well as many sports related issues that are not necessarily musculoskeletal, such as exercise-induced asthma, nutrition, growing pains and concussions.

The Bon Secours Medical Group includes experienced orthopedic physicians and surgeons of all types. If you feel it's time to see someone about your injury, make an appointment with one of our orthopedic physicians. No physician referral is necessary.

You're Invited: Well Walkers

Is the cold, drizzly winter weather derailing your exercise efforts? Become a "Well Walker"! St. Francis is opening the Bon Secours Wellness Arena most Tuesdays and Thursdays this winter to give walkers and joggers a place to exercise out of the elements. St. Francis Sports Medicine Certified Athletic Trainers will be present at each event. The program is free, with free parking available in the VIP parking lot off Church Street.

"Cold and rainy weather can often limit physical activity during winter months, particularly for those who enjoy walking or running," said Rebecca Bilott, program coordinator. "'Well Walkers' will offer a warm and dry refuge for those activities, and the path along the concourse will provide a hazard-free environment for our seniors and parents with strollers."

An on-site St. Francis Sports Medicine trainer will be present during all sessions. Educational speakers will make regular appearances and address wellness topics such as diet and nutrition. For more information, including a complete list of program dates,

please visit the BeWellFans webpage.
