Let's all agree that exercise is one of the best "medicines" for good health for just about everyone. Sadly, most people are not exercising as much or as well as they would like. People often report injury as the most common thing that keeps them from exercising. Please continue reading to learn more:

How to Keep Moving: Treating Injuries

Even with attention to preventive recommendations some injuries are inevitable. The key to good exercise is to treat your injuries promptly so you don't get out of your routine for too long.

Most exercise injuries are mild and often can be self treated, but if you are in doubt or have any questions about the specifics of treatment and return to activity, please take time to talk with one of our network's good exercise minded health professionals. Remember that what works for one person or injury isn't always the right thing for your injury. With that in mind, here are some general suggestions:

1-     Think R.IC.E. :

a.     Rest. If you feel pain and you have swelling, you probably need to stop your exercise. The time and degree of rest you take often depends on how badly you are injured. Be wary of using medicines like ibuprofen or naproxen for more than about a week without checking with your doctor.

b.     Ice. Icing is often very helpful with little risk, and can be done in a number of ways. Twenty minutes is a good average time to ice at one time. Icing may be repeated every 1-2 hours.

c.     Compression: Compression is key the reduce swelling. Ideally, you should place a wrap or sleeve on the injured area before it has swollen or after it has been elevated. The wrap should not be too tight to cause the areas around it to swell.

d.     Elevation: When not moving, the injured area should ideally be elevated as high as, or higher than, the heart.

2-     When to Seek Medical Treatment:

a.       You have severe pain, swelling, numbness, or an obvious deformity

b.       You can't tolerate any weight on, or can't move the injured area

c.       Any new or old injury that has increasing swelling or joint instability

3-     Avoid Re-injury:

a.       Try to eliminate what caused the injury in the first place.

b.       Some injuries require more time away from your activity than others.

c.       Modify your exercise as possible when injured to keep the rest of your body fit while you are recovering. For instance, a swimmer with an injured shoulder may be able to cycle focus on leg workouts while recovering.

4-    Keep Moving!

For more information about your specific injury, and our available resources, call our HURT line: 675-HURT (4878). The Bon Secours Sports and Exercise Medicine Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Millennium Office Building, Suite #250.
