On Saturday, September 21st, hundreds gathered to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the U.S.C.T. (United States Colored Troops)  and their training at Camp William Penn, located within Cheltenham Township, PA.  The day included numerous reenactments, demonstrations, a parade, exhibits, and discussions on the history of the U.S.C.T. and Camp William Penn.  Our own Dr. James Paradis was a featured presenter and  delivered a lecture about Camp William Penn, the first and largest facility for the training of African American troops in the Civil War.

Also featured in the day's celebrations was the Doane Academy Band, directed by Adrienne Mazar.  The band made such an impression that Cheltenham Township issued a resolution of thanks, and one of the attendees, Diane Foster, sent a note to Mr. McGee, calling our band's participation "THE celebration".

Pumpkin Launch

Before we all had a chance to digest all of those goodies, another tradition was gearing up on the soccer field - the 4th Annual Pumpkin Launch.  We were all pleased to see that Henry and Lee Rowan were in attendance to witness what Doane's budding crop of engineers had constructed.  This year a new twist was added to the competition when instructor Mike Russell invited the alumni to participate.  One alumni team brought their launcher to the field, and they made a strong showing until their cannon, nicknamed "the Red Tiger", literally snapped into two pieces during a launch.  In the end, several teams were able to hit the river while one team, the Seniors, did something nearly unimaginable - they launched a pumpkin that  HIT BRISTOL, PA!  The estimated distance for their river-crossing shot was over 1600 feet.  How do we top that next year? Photos

What a day!  But it wasn't over yet!  As the evening set-in, the Sophomore Class set the Dining Hall alight with their Roaring 20's themed Homecoming Dance.  Over 120 guests danced their hearts out, and spent a good deal of time mugging for the unofficial photographer of the event, Caner Ozdemir.  The event was a spectacle that even the Great Gatsby would have enjoyed (Don't take that last line literally, folks).

After such a thrilling and exhausting day it may surprise some that many of the teachers and students involved in this truly day-long Homecoming were back at school early that Sunday morning, prepared to meet and greet a host of prospective students and their families at our October Open House event.  Now that's what I call a Doane weekend!

12th Annual Burlington River Run

On Saturday, November 2nd, over two-hundred people, ages 5 to 70, ran in the 12th  Annual Burlington River Run 5k race.  Money raised by this event went to several charities including; Back On My Feet, the charities of the Burlington Rotary, and the Burlington YMCA.  All involved enjoyed the perfect weather, the beautiful fall colors, and the warm welcome upon their return to the finish line on Doane Academy's campus.

First Place overall went to Mt. Laurel, New Jersey resident, Zion Cooper, with a time of 18:58.  First place among women went to Colleen McFadden, of Burlington, New Jersey, with a time of 22:10. Race results can be viewed here. More photos are here.

David Streight and the Rowan Portrait

David Streight, author of "Breaking into the Heart of Character" spent several days at Doane Academy in October and into November working with faculty, staff, students and parents on the subject of character building.  At the heart of his discussions was the word "purpose".  Mr. Streight asserted that everything related to the subject of character and character building begins with purpose.  Everyone needs a purpose, and every action should have a purpose.

At the close of Mr. Streight's discussion with faculty, staff and parents on Sunday, November 3rd, all were invited to a reception in the newly remodeled second floor of Odenheimer Hall, where a fine gallery has been created.  Displayed along the walls are the works of the Upper School art students.  The highlight of the reception was the public debut of Nelson Shanks' portrait of Henry and Lee Rowan, which is now on display at the south end of the gallery.  Upon the completion of the construction of Rowan Hall this incredible portrait will be relocated into the new building and put on permanent display in the first floor reception area.  Doane is truly blessed to be friends with such visionary, passionate, talented  and generous people as the Rowan Family, the Shanks Family, Mr. Streight and so many others that help to make Doane the exceptional school that it is.

Sports Roundup:
Soccer, Cross Country, Crew

Soccer
The Men's Varsity Team had a strong year, finishing the regular season with a 9-5 record.  Moving on to the Penn-Jersey Playoffs, our Spartans dominated Girard by a score of 6-0 in the Quarter-Finals, and then they played to a 2-1 victory in the Semi-Finals versus Pine Forge. Although they were defeated in the Championship Game, our fighting Spartans vowed a better outcome next year.

Our Women's Varsity Team struggled at times this season but still managed to reach the Penn-Jersey Playoffs where they soundly defeated Girard in the Quarter Finals.  We have great expectations for this young team in the coming years.

The Middle School Soccer team fought to a record of 3-7 with a lot of grit. Their record does not reflect some of the close-fought battles that they engaged in.  These young Spartans, many of them playing soccer for the first time, showed a lot of growth and we look forward to each of them taking greater strides in the 2014 season.

Cross-Country
Can you say Doane domination? Our Spartans competed in five meets and also in the Penn-Jersey Championships and finished in first place EVERY TIME. In fact, Senior Tyler Siravo finished first in every Men's race that he was in this season and Sophomore Callan Devery finished first in every Women's race that she was in this year. With seven Seniors departing the team after this year, the younger Spartans will literally have some big shoes to fill.

Crew
The Spartan Crew Team is taking it to another level this year.  The team, which competed in its first regatta of the school year on Sunday, November 10th, at the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta, will be going year-round now. Our team of almost 40 students is expected to field a number of entries in each of several regattas in the spring of 2014.
