FLOWER CARE TIPS

WANT TO KEEP YOUR HANGING BASKETS AND PLANTERS LOOKING GREAT THIS SUMMER?
Here's a few key watering and maintenance tips from the experts here at Gemmell's.
WATER :
- Keeping your flowers too wet or too dry is stressful on the plant. To check if your basket needs water place your hand on the bottom of the basket and lift. If it's light then it needs water if its heavy it is still wet.
- The best time to water is first thing in the morning but baskets should be checked and watered again later in the day when the weather is extremely hot.
- If you find your baskets are drying out too fast then consider adding SOIL MOIST to your baskets. These are water gel beads that expand when you water then slowly release moisture back into your planter as the soil begins to dry. They are a life saver and you can do several pots for for only $5.99!
- When watering make sure you water well until the water runs out the bottom of your pot. This ensure that you haven't missed a spot.
- Try not to blast your baskets/planters with a hose end sprayer as it beats down the flowers. A gentle rain nozzle or a watering can helps keep your basket full and lush.
FEED :
- Annuals put all their energy in to blooming all season long and that is alot of work for a plant! Weekly fertilizing is essential to keeping your flowers healthy and blooming. Yellow, sickly looking plants in mid to late summer are almost always a result of lack of fertilizer.
- Choose a BALANCED 20-20-20 FERTILIZER with micro nutrients this ensures that you are feeding the leaves, the flowers, and the roots. Micro nutrients(copper, boron, magnesium) are an important component to help the plant successfully take up the fertilizer. Our favourite choice is FAFARD ALL-PURPOSE 20-20-20
DEADHEAD:
- Give your basket or planter a 'HAIRCUT' once a week. Take a long trailing piece and prune it back to near the top of the planter. This helps the plant branch out full with more blossoms and prevents the top of your baskets from becoming flat and bare with stringy branches that have blooms only on the tips.
