How to choose a desk? Whether for a child or for yourself, here are my top tips for picking the right desk.

  1. The first consideration is: do you really need a desk?  Before you My Desk purchase a desk, think about your habits and be sure a desk is right for you. Many adults pay bills online on their laptop on the couch, while kids do homework in the kitchen or dining room; a "portable desk" solution might be better instead of a traditional desk.
  2. Where will you put the desk? Do you have a dedicated home office (in a room that you actually use), or are you trying to stash a desk in a dining room or bedroom closet?  Some small desks can be very efficient. If you have a large home office, a large desk system with several components may work well.
  3. Next, think about how you will use the desk so that you can pick out a good size and style. Is this a desk where you will sit and work?  Will you need to spread out papers and projects? Or will you work someplace else and use the desk more for storage? What electronics will be on your desk?  Here's a good link from Apartment Therapy about the pros and cons of many different types of desks.
  4. Make sure you have appropriate storage in your desk (or next to it). A drawer for pens, paper, etc., and a few file drawers are key. Many desks sold today are flat table tops with no storage at all! If you love this kind of desk, think about using a file cabinet, shelf, or even a dresser for additional storage nearby.
  5. A note about kid's desks: some desks are so small that your kids will soon outgrow them. Be sure you get a big-enough sized desk that will work as your child grows.
