Smart Packing

This summer we have a big trip planned: we're heading west to South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore and all the sights with another family. With seven of us in one minivan, space will be at a premium. I've been spending some time thinking about how we can pack smart.

Here are some strategies you can use:

  • Get out everything you think you want to bring, and lay it out on your bed. Then pack only half of what you have out.
  • Check out this helpful post from Apartment Therapy about how to pack light. One of these techniques should work for you!
  • Bring clothes that are versatile. You may opt for solid bottoms with more interesting tops. Use accessories to dress up an outfit.
  • If you have a large bag or are sharing it for someone else, use smaller bags (even plastic gallon bags) to contain your clothes. This year I'm trying the new, lightweight packing cubes to keep my things separate from my husband's in our shared suitcase.  For young kids, consider putting each day's outfit in a gallon bag and packing all the bags. Makes it easy for kids to get dressed while away!
  • Use a packing list, either one you create or find one online.
  • Contain the cords. I love clear plastic baggies to keep things together, and also this great Grid-it system.

How does a Professional Organizer deal with her closet, kitchen, desk, and the rest of her stuff?

Check out the recent blog posts in the My Favorite Container series. A new container is featured each month this year.

Especially for Parents: Independence Day
As we celebrate July 4th, our country's Independence Day, think about how you can make your family more independent. When kids can find what they need, easily put things away, and contribute to the family, they build their organizing skills, confidence and independence.

For young kids:

  • Can they reach where they have to put their bags and coats?
  • Can they put away their own clothes in a dresser? (And I use the term "put away" loosely. I have learned to live with the way my daughter squeezes clothing in her drawers - at least it is put away!)
  • Do they have designated drawers in the kitchen for their plates, cups and even snacks? Here is how I helped one mom do this in her kitchen.

 For older kids:

  • Are you giving them chores to do, letting them cook dinner one night, and doing their own laundry?
  • Do they have some input into family activities and schedules?

Last weekend my 9 1/2 year old daughter said, "I feel so grown up." What caused this reaction? She had cooked pancakes all by herself (with supervision), had helped Dad with a small home project, and gleefully picked out the new paint color for her room.

Take a few minutes this month and see if you can find additional ways to help increase your kids independence.
