 March 2016
Dear Friends,

March has always been a capricious month here in Vermont, masquerading as lion and lamb in turn.  Likewise, we might feel perfectly content to curl up by the fire (with a good book, of course!) one moment and feel struck with cabin fever the next.  Luckily, Phoenix Books has the cure for both conditions!  We have novels to cozy up with and nonfiction to broaden your mind.  We also have plenty of gardening books, field guides, hiking books, and more, so if you're ready to start planning for warmer months, come on in!

Sincerely,

Mike, Renee, Adam, Ali, Beth, Bianca, Christy, Colleen, Donna, Eliza, Erik, Heather, JoAnna, Johanna, Kaitlin, Kari, Kelly, Kristen, Laura, Lynn, Maggie, Michael, Monika, Phil, Rachel F.,
Rachel O., Rachel T., Rebecca, Sean, Tod,
Tricia, Wendy
, and Will

UPDATE:  PHOENIX RECOGNIZED BY PW
The latest news on the Bookstore of the Year award

Beth Wagner
Last month, we shared the news that Phoenix Books has been shortlisted for the Publishers Weekly Bookstore of the Year Award.  Thank you for your enthusiastic responses! And thank you also to Mountain Times, Seven Days, WCAX, and others for sharing this news.

We've been working hard on our
Colleen Shipman
application, and want to recognize two staff members in particular for their efforts on this front:  Beth, Phoenix's book buyer, and Colleen, Phoenix's general manager, have put together a creative and well-produced application that we're proud to submit.  Beth and Colleen, thank you so much for everything you've done for this exciting opportunity to share Phoenix Books with the bookselling world!

Just a few days after the event, we learned about an upcoming Harry Potter book! Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The book will be released on July 31st, and we're taking preorders now!  To preorder, just click on the graphic below or give us a ring at 872-7111 in Essex, 448-3350 in Burlington, or 855-8078 in Rutland.

SLEDDING IN RUTLAND
On Friday February 12, Phoenix Books Rutland stayed open late to provide shelter (and books) to folks out for the first of Rutland's Winterfest events: sledding downtown!

While Mother Nature didn't cooperate and supply us with plentiful snow, a portion of Center Street was closed off and snow saved from the limited snowfall we've had was spread and topped off with fresh Zamboni shavings from the city ice rink.

A large number of people came out to take a run or two, and Phoenix Books was happy to be one of several stores that stayed open late to welcome everyone downtown.

NEW ON THE AUTHORS
Chris Bohjalian's The Guest Room Book Tour

Vermont's own Chris Bohjalian joined us in January to discuss his new novel, The Guest Room. Chris Bohjalian is the author of eighteen books, including Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands; The Sandcastle Girls; Skeletons at the Feast; The Double Bind; and Midwives. His novel Midwives was a number one New York Times bestseller and a selection of Oprah's Book Club. His work has been translated into more than thirty languages, and three of his novels have become movies (Secrets of Eden, Midwives, and Past the Bleachers).

Intrigued by one of the books featured in this newsletter?

Give us a ring at 872-7111 in Essex, 448-3350 in Burlington, or 855-8078 in Rutland so we can check the shelves and hold this book for you.  If the book is sold out, we'll be happy to order a copy and call you when it's in.  Special orders almost always come in quickly, and don't involve any extra fees.

A SIGNIFICANT PASSING
A Note from Renee Reiner

Elizabeth Orr passed away on February 4th.  Many will remember her because she owned the Everyday Bookshop in Burlington for more than 40 years.  Many will remember feisty demeanor and British accent.  Many will remember her walking 2-1/2 miles to and from her home to the bookshop, in all seasons and all weather.  Elizabeth did what few could do in this business, and she did it for a very long time.

My fondest memory?  Shortly after Phoenix Books Burlington opened, Elizabeth came in to the store.  I was fortunate to be behind the counter at that moment, and I felt as though royalty had descended.  It was an honor and a privilege to show her around our store and she was most gracious.  I was also able to send her home with a large bag of reader's copies, and I truly hope she enjoyed them.

Years ago, in the late 1990's, I remember going to Elizabeth's shop, by then moved from Church Street back to College.  I offered to run the store for her, so that she could take a few days off, should she wish to.  Thank you, she said, but, firmly, no.  At least I'd tried.

I feel I personally owe Elizabeth Orr a debt of gratitude for what she did for our community.  I feel I have big and important shoes that I work to fill.  I am grateful to her and I will miss her good spirit.
