Dear Friends,
Phoenix Books Rutland is officially open! We held the Ribbon Cutting this Monday, and just last night Chris Bohjalian visited for our very first author event in Rutland. We'll continue the festivities this weekend, but in the meantime we want to send out a huge "Thank you!" to everyone who has helped make this possible. We also want to extend an invitation to each and every one of you to visit us at 2 Center Street in Rutland. Read on for more news and photos from the Grand Opening.
This is a gorgeous time of year, with apple season well underway and Halloween creeping up on us. Below, you can find some of our favorite books on both subjects, as well as notes on upcoming events and other happenings at Phoenix Books.
Sincerely,
Mike, Renee, Adam, Ali, Beth, Christy, Colleen, Dan, Donna, Eliza, Erik, Heather, Johanna, Kari, Kelly, Kristen, Lynn, Michael, Monika, Phil, Rachel F., Rachel O., Rachel T., Rebecca, Sean, Tod, Tricia, Wendy, and Will

THE NEWS FROM RUTLAND Phoenix Books Rutland is officially open!
Thank you so much to everyone who helped us celebrate the Grand Opening of Phoenix Books Rutland!
There were over 150 in attendance at the ribbon cutting! Our neighbors at Same Sun of Vermont took this photo of the big event.
After the ribbon cutting, we enjoyed coffee, cider, donuts, and, of course, BOOKS! The outpouring of support from the community was remarkable. Thank you to everyone who has helped make Phoenix Books Rutland possible!

FIGHT HUNGER WITH CRENSHAW
Crenshaw is imaginary. Childhood hunger isn't. Help us feed families in need.
This October, Macmillan Children's Publishing Group is partnering with independent bookstores - including all three Phoenix Books locations - to host a nationwide food drive to raise awareness of childhood hunger. Inspired by Crenshaw, a new middle grade novel by Newbery Medalist Katherine Applegate, we're teaming up with local food pantries to collect items for children in need. Read more.

SURPRISE SIGNINGS AT PHOENIX BOOKS
Visits from local and international authors
Phoenix Books has been a hub of authorly activity lately! In addition to our events, we've had four wonderful authors visit us and sign books: Vermont authors Tamara Ellis Smith ( Another Kind of Hurricane), Jonathan Mingle ( Fire & Ice) and Linda Urban ( Milo Speck) stopped by, as well as Canadian author John Farrow ( The Storm Murders). Would you like an autographed copy? Quantities are limited, and vary by location, so give Phoenix Books Burlington a ring at 448-3350 so we can put one aside for you.

Exploring Vermont's Favorite Fruit
It's easy to take apples for granted here in Vermont, but there's always something new to learn - and taste - when it comes to our state fruit. Our cooking section houses a variety of guides to cooking and brewing with apples, and anyone inspired to grow their own apples and other fruit will want to peruse our gardening shelves.
The newly released third edition of The Apple Cookbook is packed full of recipes ranging from traditional favorites to the wildly unexpected. Apples of New England is a quick and handy guide to apple varieties, and is easy to take along to farmer's markets. For an in-depth treatment of apple varieties, open up Apples of Uncommon Character, by Vermonter and renowned food writer Rowan Jacobsen. Looking to turn your apples into alcohol? Try Craft Cider by Jeff Smith (published by Vermont's own Countryman Press) or Apples to Cider by April White and Stephen Wood.

STORIES THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT
Anticipating Halloween
Come on by to discover delightfully scary (and just plain delightful) new books for your young readers on our Halloween displays! In the meantime, here are a few titles to whet your appetite:
Halloween is a time to make fun out of fears, but sometimes that's not so easy. The Fun Book of Scary Stuff, by Emily Jenkins, tells the story of a boy and his two dogs who learn that nothing is as scary as it seems when you're surrounded by those you love. The new activity book inspired by Julia Donaldson's picture book Room on the Broom is packed with Halloween fun. The Sweetest Witch Around, by Alison McGhee, with pictures by local illustrator and cartoonist Harry Bliss, is a tale of Halloween mischief and bravery. Middle readers who enjoyed Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book will love A Curious Tale of the In-Between, by Lauren DeStefano. Terry Pratchett's The Shepherd's Crown concludes the young adult series that began with Wee Free Men. It's the fifth book to feature young witch Tiffany Aching, and the final novel in Pratchett's much-loved Discworld series.
