...and One More

Heart-wrenching and humorous, Helen Macdonald's H is for Hawk is an unflinching account of bereavement and a unique look at an extraordinary beast, with a parallel examination of a legendary writer's eccentric falconry. Obsession, madness, memory, myth, and history combine to achieve a distinctive blend of nature writing and memoir from an outstanding literary innovator.

Dear Friends,

June 21st will mark the summer solstice, and there's nothing better than these long days of summer for stretching out in the sun and enjoying a good read.  On the other hand, if you're looking to get out and enjoy Vermont's lush summer landscape, we invite you to visit our nature section for field guides and foraging guides, our travel section for guides to local trails, our gardening section to learn how to grow nourishing veggies and stunning flowers, and our health section to discover the medicinal herbs that might be hiding in the garden, backyard, and woods.

We'd also like to invite you in to a trio of events this month, featuring illustrator Jason Chin, memoirist Kim Korson, and #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Magicians Trilogy, Lev Grossman.  Read on for the details of these events, and for our latest news.  In the sidebar, you'll find some of our favorite new books here at Phoenix.  Just click on any cover image to peruse these and more new titles.

THE NEWS FROM RUTLAND
Independent Bookstore Day

Cheryl Hooker, a supporter of Phoenix Books Rutland, at the Rutland Farmers' Market.

Phoenix Books Essex's manager, Colleen Shipman, visited the Rutland Farmers' Market on May 2nd, in anticipation of opening our third store in Rutland later this summer. Since it was Independent Bookstore Day, visitors were asked to to complete the following sentence: "I'm excited to have an indie bookstore in Rutland because ..." Customers at Phoenix Books locations in Essex and Burlington were asked to complete a similar sentence in honor of independent bookstore day. "It was nice to have an activity that our customers could participate in at all three of our locations," Colleen says.
