FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Amazon & the 'Corruption of Power'

"What we are witnessing with Amazon v. Hachette is not a battle for lower e-book prices for the good of readers. We are witnessing the corruption of power, where almost having it all isn't the same, or as satisfying, as having it all. We are seeing how the desire for complete control will allow someone to set conscience aside while the lives and careers of others are toyed with like chess pieces, all while telling the world with a straight face that this power-move is for the good of us all."
--Kevin Morgan Watson, Press 53 publisher

PHOENIX PROFILES: KRISTEN
For this month's installment of "Phoenix Profiles," we're featuring Kristen, a bookseller at Phoenix Books Essex, and Phoenix's Marketing & Events Manager.

Kristen has worked and traveled in Ireland, Italy, Maine, and Philadelphia, and has since returned home to Vermont. She is a fan of authors who walk the line between fantasy and reality (e.g. Alice Hoffman and Neil Gaiman) and will forever be devoted to Terry Pratchett. Since she completed an apprenticeship with herbalist Rosemary Gladstar, Kristen has informally adopted Phoenix's selection of books on herbalism, and her staff picks pages are chock full of titles on herbs for children and for aging, for stress and for sickness, for general health and in food and beverages.

FICTION

Fives and Twenty-Fives, by Michael Pitre

A heart-stopping debut novel about war and its aftermath by an Iraq War veteran.

"One of the great novels of war, the kind of book that comes along only once or twice each generation. It pulls off that rare literary feat of being at once expansive and personal; real and brutal and funny and wise. Michael Pitre is not just the real deal; he's a literary force in the making." -Joseph Boyden, author of Three Day Road  (Hardcover, Fiction)

The Long Way Home, by Louise Penny
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache has found a peace he'd only imagined possible, but finds himself pulled into the disappearance of local resident Clara Morrow's estranged husband. The search takes him further and further from Three Pines to an area so desolate, so damned, the first mariners called it "the land God gave to Cain." And there he discovers the terrible damage done by a sin-sick soul. (Hardcover, Mystery)

House of Wonder, by Sarah Healy
Jenna Parsons's childhood was one of block parties and barbecues, where her mother, a former beauty queen, continued her reign and her twin brother, Warren, was viewed as just another oddball kid. But as her mother's shopaholic habits intensified, and her brother's behavior became viewed as more strange than quirky, Jenna sought to distance herself from them. But now, in his peculiar way, Warren summons her home. As she stands by her family, she also begins to find beauty in unexpected places, strength in unlikely people, and a future she couldn't have imagined. (Paperback, Fiction)
Celebrate the book launch with Sarah Healy on Thursday, September 4th at Phoenix Books Burlington!

NON-FICTION

The End of Absence, by Michael Harris
Kristen's staff pick!
Soon enough, nobody will remember life before the Internet. What does this unavoidable fact mean? For future generations, it won't mean anything very obvious. But those of us who have lived both with and without the crowded connectivity of online life have a rare opportunity. We can still recognize the difference between Before and After. In this eloquent and thought-provoking book, Michael Harris argues that amid all the changes we're experiencing, the most interesting is the one that future generations will find hardest to grasp: The end of absence, the loss of solitude. (Hardcover, Sociology)

Will It Waffle?, by Daniel Shumski
Over 50 unexpected and delicious meals, sides, and snacks that you can make in your waffle iron.
How many great ideas begin with a nagging thought in the middle of the night that should disappear by morning, but doesn't? For Daniel Shumski, it was: Will it waffle? Hundreds of hours, countless messes, and 53 perfected recipes later, that answer is a resounding: Yes, it will! Steak? Yes! Pizza? Yes! Apple pie? Emphatically yes. (Paperback, Cooking)
Keep an eye out for details on Will it Waffle Wednesday at Phoenix Books Essex on September 10th!

Home Grown, by Ben Hewitt
"This fine book may make you wish you'd grown up in a very different way."
-Bill McKibben, author of Wandering Home

"Ben Hewitt walks you along the lanes of his small family farm right into the heart of parenting. He does not judge the new normal of life's fever-pitch pace but fills you with the courage to follow your hopes, which may well transform your family."-Kim John Payne, MEd, author of Simplicity Parenting  (Hardcover, Parenting)

Celebrate the book launch with Ben Hewitt at Phoenix Books Essex on Saturday, September 13th!

Getting Schooled, by Garrett Keizer
Perhaps no profession is so constantly discussed, regulated, and maligned by non-practitioners as teaching. The voices of the teachers themselves are conspicuously missing. Defying this trend, teacher and writer Garret Keizer takes us to school--literally--in this arresting account of his return to the same rural Vermont high school where he taught fourteen years ago. Angry, humorous, and always hopeful, Getting Schooled is as good an argument as we are likely to hear for a substantive reassessment of our schools and those who struggle in them. (Hardcover, Parenting)
Join Garret Keizer for a discussion of Getting Schooled
at Phoenix Books Burlington on Thursday, September 11th!
