FICTION
A Killing in the Hills, by Julia Keller
"Keller's vividly described characters and shifting points of view make this debut novel especially realistic . . . Superbly detailed and suspense-drenched" -Library Journal (starred)
What's happening in Acker's Gap, West Virginia? Three elderly men are gunned down over their coffee at a local diner, and seemingly half the town is there to witness the act. Still, it happened so fast, and no one seems to have gotten a good look at the shooter. In this powerful, intricate debut from a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, a mother and a daughter try to do right by a town and each other before it's too late. (Paperback, Mystery)

And when his father gets a new job and his family moves from a little town to an apartment in New York City, Otis's life becomes sort-of crazy. Otis hasn't even made it through the lobby of Tidwell Towers before he is cursed to break his bones by the boy who lives in the potted lobby plant--a boy whose curses always come true. With the help of his new friend Perry (who keeps a miniature horse--a very gassy one), Otis works on coming up with a plan to expose the potted-plant boy and thwart the curse. RAISING PASSIONATE READERS

Chick 'n' Pug Meet The Dude, by Jennifer Sattler
The long-awaited sequel is here! It's a bird, it's a dog-it's CHICK N PUG. And they've got a new friend in town. He's taller than the Chrysler Building. He drools more than a baby sucking on a piece of Jello. Dog people will revere him. Chick and Pug know him only as...The Dude. When the larger-than-life Dude ambles into Pug's territory and steals Pug's favorite chew toy, Chick is ready to take down the slobbering scoundrel. However, that would require making Pug get up first. Will Chick save the day? Will Pug nap through all the best parts? Stay tuned! (Picture Book, Ages 3-6.)
Crankee Doodle, by Tom Angleberger & Cece Bell
Many know the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy," but few understand it. This unapologetically silly picture book reveals that the legendary ride to town (and the whole macaroni thing) was all suggested by Mr. Doodle's overeager pony. This just makes Mr. Doodle cranky: "I do not want macaroni. I do not want a feather. I do not want any other clothing, any other pasta, or any other parts of a bird. I do not want anything that they have in town!" A historical note ends this colorful, comical take on a nonsensical old song. (Picture Book, Ages 4-8)
Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great, by Bob SheaStaff Pick! Ever since Unicorn moved into the neighborhood, Goat has been feeling out of sorts. Goat thought his bike was cool-until he saw that Unicorn could fly to school! Goat made marshmallow squares that almost came out right, but Unicorn made it rain cupcakes! Unicorn is such a show-off, how can Goat compete? When Goat and Unicorn share a piece of pizza, Goat learns that being a unicorn might not be all it's cracked up to be. And when Unicorn shows his admiration for Goat, it looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship. (Picture Book, Ages 2-6)
The Day the Crayons Quit, by Drew Dewalt & Oliver Jeffers Crayons have feelings too. Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking-each believes he is the true color of the sun. Kids will be imagining their own conversations with crayons and coloring a blue streak in no time. (Picture Book, Ages 3-7)

Bedtime Math, by Laura Overdeck
Laura Overdeck wants to start a revolution-in the way we introduce math to children.
The mission: To make the nightly math riddle as common as the bedtime story. Why? Multiple generations of Americans are uncomfortable with math. This attitude is contagious and potentially harmful to children, setting them up for fear and failure. Everyone knows parents should read to their children, but math is just as important. We can make numbers fun, and change the world, one Bedtime Math problem at a time. (Picture Book, Ages 3-8.)
