Call for Nominations to the HPBAC Board of Directors

The HPBAC Nominating Committee is responsible for presenting a slate of Directors to members to ensure HPBAC is well governed. The Nominating Committee this year includes Alan Murphy, Steve Keeling, Jack Goldman and Martin Miles.

Steve Turnbull of United States Stove Company has been appointed to fill the At Large position left vacate by the passing of Tom Pugh until an election can be held.

A second candidate who has been put forward by members of the Nominating Committee and has agreed to stand is Alan Baroey of Marsh's Fireplaces.

Certain positions are currently appointed by the regional Chapter but we have openings for at-large directors.

The committee is seeking candidates for at least one At-Large position. Directors serve a two year term.

Following the deadline for nominations, members will receive ballots by email and mail. The Nominating Committee will report to the members the Directors that have been acclaimed or elected as well as the Officers for the coming year.

To facilitate the preparation of the slate and to ensure that the process is open to all members, the Nominating Committee is now issuing a Call for Nominations from the members of HPBA Canada.

If you are interested in becoming a candidate please contact Laura Litchfield at hpbac@bellnet.ca to receive a Board Candidate information package.

Please submit your
Nomination Form no later than 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, on Tuesday, June 25th, 2013.

If you would like information on the processes and criteria please view the Board Candidate Criteria Process document.

If you are interested in becoming active in your trade association please contact any board or staff member for information on joining a national or Chapter committee.

Sincerely,

Martin Miles

Government Affairs Update

Tony Gottschalk

Glass Fronts Safety
In May 2011 the CPSC (Consumer Protection Safety Commission) in the US was petitioned by Dr. Carroll Pollack-Nelson requesting formal regulation of gas fronted fireplaces. If successful this would likely have meant major design limitations and restrictions on installations.

Following a massive effort by HPBA, the industry developed its own voluntary proposals which have since been integrated into the relevant safety standards. HPBA also agreed to run a major consumer education campaign.

The CPSA felt that industry had behaved responsibly in developing the new standard and last month formerly rejected the petition.

This is a massive result for the industry and only possible because of the existence of an adequately funded trade association.

A glass fronts safety video is available from HPBA and can be branded with your store logo at the low cost of $125 US or for only $200 US you can have a voice-over added with your company name.

Contact Leslie Wheeler at HPBA 703-522-0086, extension 116 for details.

Glass Fronts Safety brochures, FAQs and checklists are available on the hpbacanada.org and hpba.org websites. Visit the product safety section to download printable versions.

Going to the Atlantic Chapter event in June? We will have Burn Wise videos for sale.

Join HPBAC for a Member Benefits Focus Group

HPBA Canada will host focus groups in the Atlantic and Central Chapters this year.
Here's why you should participate...
  • You can help HPBAC grow membership
  • More members equals fewer dues increases and access to better programs
  • More members means a stronger voice and a more credible association when we face regulatory issues

Wouldn't you like to see more members supporting your industry association?

Join HPBAC and your local chapter for a 90 minute focus group session and lend your voice and support. We need your input to determine what programs you value and how much you value them. You'll learn more about member benefits. Maybe there are some benefits you aren't even aware of now.

The sessions are free to all members.

Central Chapter Symposium Postponed to 2014

In a recent decision by the Central Chapter Board,  it has been decided to postpone the Fireside Symposium to 2014.

Decision to postpone the Symposium

The decision was not an easy one, and was due primarily to the lack of delegate commitment for the event.  Despite the best efforts of the Event Committee and staff to rally commitment in the past few weeks, there was a general consensus, that the model of the show this year was not a good option for many of our members.

Instead of continuing with preparations, and having our exhibitors invest time and money in an event that was poised to have low attendance, we have opted to cancel our Blue Mountain commitment, and will begin preparations on an event, in 2014 with a different model.  To provide some input regarding the structure of the 2014 event, please complete our survey by clicking HERE

For those who were planning on attending the show, we apologize for the inconvenience, but encourage you to watch for regional and online training in the coming months.
