Your Daily Office

Hear my voice, O LORD, according to your loving-kindness; *

according to your judgments, give me life.
They draw near who in malice persecute me; *
they are very far from your law.
You, O LORD, are near at hand, *
and all your commandments are true.
Long have I known from your decrees *
that you have established them for ever.

Psalm 119

New Funeral Vestments Purchased for St. John's

Thank you to the anonymous donor who made it possible for St. John's to purchase new funeral vestments, an altar frontal, and antependia.  The intricate design is truly beautiful and incorporates images of both the grief of loss and the joy of eternal life in the Resurrection. They will make a notable contribution to the solemn dignity of our funeral services.

Stephen Ministry Classes Offered

The St. John's Stephen Ministry team is offering a new class for Stephen Ministry, the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations using the Stephen Series system.

This ministry equips and empowers lay caregivers - called Stephen Ministers - to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.   The training will be weekly, each Monday (6:30 - 9:00 p.m.) starting November 4 and concluding in May of 2014.

If you feel you might be called to apply to become a Stephen Minister, please contact Carol Ihrig or Fr. Doug Zimmerman.

Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.   - Galatians 6:2, NRSV
If you would like your information to be included in next week's Scroll, please email all content by Monday at 9:00 a.m.

Rally Day Round-Up

Join us for our annual Rally Day Round-Up, on Sunday, October 20, Ministry Banners where our many St. John's ministries will be featured in Rudisill Parish Hall following the 9:00 a.m. service.  A fun event for all ages, this day offers parishioners the opportunity to investigate all the many ways they may become involved in the life of the church.  From adult Christian education to social gatherings to outreach in our own backyard, there's something for everyone!  Parishioners are encouraged to bring a friend to enjoy the day and learn about St. John's. A "hand-held" breakfast will be served.

There will be no middle or high school Sunday School on October 20.

Sandwich Sunday

sandwich Also on Sunday morning, October 20, after the 9:00 a.m. service, we will prepare sandwiches and assemble bag lunches for our needy friends at Faith Cafe.  Thanks to Janice Gagliardo and Kim Brown for being our hosts this month!

Choral Evensong

Evensong, like all forms of liturgical worship, has elements of drama and ritual that nourish the spiritual life of all of us. It is based entirely on elements of Holy Scripture and it is scripted according to a long history, originating in Judaic and early Christian evening worship.

Evensong is traditionally mostly sung by a choir, with the full

rosewindowcongregation participating throughout in thoughtful prayer, allowing the music to soothe us and to draw us closer to the presence of God. The congregation also joins in the spoken parts of the liturgy: the reciting of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer, as well as singing the hymns. As a part of the daily office, it is intended to be part of a regular discipline of worship.

At St. John's, we are able to enjoy Evensong with our wonderful choir several times per year.  The next Evensong will take place on Sunday, October 20, at 5:00 p.m.  Join us and wind down from a busy, fun Rally Day Roundup with quiet prayer and music!

Tuesday, October 22
Women's Mid Morning Bible Study

The group welcomes all women in our church community and their friends and neighbors to join them this fall on alternate Tuesdays in the Lowry Room for fellowship, prayer and study, 10:15 to 11:30 a.m.  For more information, contact Sally Wiley at [email protected] or 253.3906 or Joan McKay at [email protected].
