Dear Friends,

I always find this time of year interesting. To me it feels like limbo time. I woke up this morning feeling like I want to get back into the regular routine, and at the same time, just really enjoying the quiet time after the holidays.

Resolutions: To Do and Not To Do

Of course, there are the dreaded New Year's Resolutions that creep up every year at this time. Whether you are a resolution person or not, I think it's almost impossible to not make a resolution of some type. I used to make grand resolutions: "From now on, I'm going to (fill in the blank) every day." Really, it's just ridiculous. As a friend of mine says, it's almost more important to decide what you aren't going to do and then act accordingly. For example, if you are going to get up earlier every day to work out, then you are going to have to go to bed earlier and not watch TV all night. Get up early = don't stay up late. You get the picture.

Make Yourself a Priority

It can be the same with how you dress yourself everyday. Forget the "every day I'm going to dress up" thing and go with, "I'm going to make sure I spend 5 minutes choosing what I want to wear every day." It's all about making yourself a priority in your own life. If you can make yourself a priority, then pretty soon other people may jump on the bandwagon as well.

Parents Are People Too

Sometimes clients tell me that their kids (yes, their kids) will give them a hard time when they buy something for themselves. We all know that kids are naturally self-centered, but I think a bigger piece of this is that kids often don't see their parents as anyone other than... parents. Kids don't realize that we all have hopes, dreams and aspirations, and that as parents we often lose that piece of ourselves.

Make the Most of Your Resolution

But back to those New Year's resolutions. I think that making a reasonable resolution is good. But when you do, give it your best shot, and don't worry if every day isn't perfect. As Julie Child always said, "Never apologize." When you didn't quite pull it together on the wardrobe front, just stand up straighter. Act as if you feel great and it can actually make you feel great. So much of having your own sense of style is having confidence in who you are.

Now, some people will take this to the extreme and say that they are people who wear their workout clothes or jammies all day and that's "who they are." I completely disagree. Ten buck says that before you got married, had kids and got into a routine of life, you didn't just throw something on every day and walk away. You took time to make sure that you were the best you could be. You took daily pride in your look and your sense of who you were in terms of style.

Resolve to Find the Real You

It's a new year - not to mention a new decade! - so there's no time like the present to figure out who you are and run with it. If you are tired of the workout wear, the all-day jammies, or the ripped jeans, then this is a great time for you to make a change. Maybe one small New Year's resolution could actually change your life.

Wishing you a wonderful 2010,
Patricia Gorham

My Favorite Outdoor Workout Jacket
Serrano Jacket from Eddie Bauer First AscentIf you buy only one outdoor workout jacket this year, let it be the Serrano jacket by Eddie Bauer First Ascent. This jacket is unbelievable! Warm when it's cold out, warm when the jacket is wet, warm all the time! I wore it when it was 20 degrees with just a light shirt underneath and kept warm running. I wore it when it was pouring and was the only person after the run who didn't feel cold! At $169 it's not inexpensive, but it is hands-down the only jacket you will need for a long while. Run, don't walk to get this great jacket.

My Favorite Outdoor Workout Pant
Lucy Power Pant IINeed a great outdoor workout pant that holds its shape and looks great? Look no further than Lucy. Their Power Pant II is amazing for outdoor or indoor workout wear. It has a zipper pocket, a nice leg width (you don't have to worry about them flapping around at the bottom), and it looks great! They come in 3 different lengths, which makes this a pant that works for almost anyone!
