Tip of the Month

"If you wear the latest style and it's not your look, it shows up on your face. Nothing ages you faster than desperation."

This tip comes from actress and designer Jaclyn Smith.

Dear Friends,

It's winter (even though spring is rapidly approaching), it's cold, it's raining, the economy is in a downturn or maybe it's in the trash. If there ever was time for a "go to" outfit it's now. If you've been a client of mine you know the term. It's what I ask a client when I ask them to show me the outfit they grab every time they have to have the perfect look for a certain event. Or the outfit they grab when they wake up in the dumps and want to try to change their mood. If you don't have one, then read on, because you need one. Like never before.

As you know, I find this time of year a challenge. This is not news to anyone who knows me. In fact it's about this time of year when at least one of my friends tells me to stop complaining, which is understandable. There are the days when I don't really feel like getting dressed in a great outfit or even really getting dressed. The deal is, and I've said this a million times, when you look good, you feel good. It's just a fact. Which brings us to the "go to" outfit. Or outfits if you are inclined.

Take my word for it, you need a "go to" outfit and you need this outfit even if you are not currently working outside the home. The deal is, you want to dress for your audience and the first audience you have is you. The next of course, is the event itself. You need an outfit you can put your hands on in a flash and every time you put it on, you feel great. The reason this is so important is that it can change your mood, boost your self-confidence, and show that you care about yourself and the person you are with.

For me, my "go to" outfit starts with a plain black sheath dress. Now, I know it's spring so we want to go with some color. So, from there I either add a great bright coral coat or if need be a lightweight turtleneck (sometimes both). If I'm going to be doing a lot of walking I put on my favorite flat riding boots with tights. If not, I'll pull out a great pair of heels and start my day. I've been known to put an extra pair of shoes in the car that I change into half way thru the day because of either weather conditions or planning ahead in case my feet start to hurt.

I can take that same sheath dress in the summer and wear it with strappy sandals and a light sweater and belt with platform sandals. The point is, every time I put this dress on I feel great. I can add or take away based on the weather but without exception I love what I'm wearing and it lifts my spirits. If you live in a climate that has more definite seasons you might need to tweak this a bit but the concept is the same. I can never say this enough: when you look good, you feel good.

Before you turn in tonight, find your "go to" outfit in your own closet. It's a tough world out there... full of a lot of dark news right now. Do yourself a favor and start your day with your best foot forward. What you wear really could change your whole outlook. And we can all use a more positive outlook.
