  March 2015

No More Snow This has been a long, brutal winter. As we pause to think about nicer weather ahead, I am reminded of a quote from Anne Bradstreet, "If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."

So, for those of you who tasted adversity this winter (as many of us did), may there be prosperity (and no snow) in your near future.

Enjoy the upcoming spring, and hope to see you soon at one of our events.

Sincerely,

Lisa DeAngelis
Director

Building a Better Boston Award Breakfast
Chancellor Motley and Michelle Shell On February 5th over 120 attendees join us for the 3rd Annual Building a Better Boston Award Breakfast honoring Michelle A. Shell, chairwoman of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority.  It was wonderful to see so many "Supporters of Michelle Shell" brave the elements to celebrate her achievements. As Michelle stated in acceptance speech about what gave her the confidence to head the MCCA board, "it was the knowledge that I would not be going it alone... It was an opportunity to work with all of you to show the world who we really are and to lift all boats with the tide. And for that, I am eternally grateful." Michelle provides a tremendous example of how collaboration truly makes a difference. Click here to see the picture was published in the Boston Business Journal (page 18). Click here for pictures.

Still Leading the Way: Continuing the march forward
Kevin Peterson and Ron Bell Last summer's Leading the Way award recipient, Ron Bell (ELP 2005), founder, Dunk the Vote helped to organize a trip for UMass Boston students to mark the 50th anniversary of the pivotal "Bloody Sunday" march. Bell collaborated with  Kevin Peterson (ELP 2003), founder, New Democracy Coalition; UMass Boston Senior Lecturer of Africana Studies Anthony Van Der Meer; and community advocate Leonard Lee to make the trip possible.

On March 8, the organizers along with the students crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. A reporter and photographer with The Boston Globe accompanied the group and documented the trip. Additional coverage can be found via UMass Boston News.

Find Kevin Peterson's reflections on the trip to Selma in the Boston Herald Op Ed, Selma: A lesson in perseverance.
