Greetings!
This past week has been filled with tragedy. Innocent lives were lost, and countless others were injured both physically and mentally. We are a community in mourning, but also a community that is coming together "Boston Strong."
The Center for Collaborative Leadership is grateful to the network of emerging leaders who have shown so much compassion and support during this time. There are many of you out there who have expressed an interest in doing something meaningful as an ELP community.
We are working closely with the alumni board to quickly identify an appropriate opportunity. We hope to provide details within the next week. Please do contact us with any suggestions.
Sincerely,
Lisa, Andrea and Christina

 | | Joe Morrissey (second from left) pictured with Marsh Carter and State Street colleagues April 28, 2009 |
Joe Morrissey, Emerging Leaders Program class of 2005 died peacefully, February 28, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 39. Joe was Vice President of Corporate Citizenship for State Street, where, among other great work, he advocated for the Partners in the Community fund to be awarded to the Center. The fund allows for nonprofit participation in the ELP. Joe came to the program when he was the Senior Administrator of Community Relations for John Hancock Financial Services. In that role, Joe organized community projects such as Operation Math Corps, Summer of Opportunity and the Ron Burton Holiday Gift Wrapping which positively impacted the lives of thousands of Boston youth. In his application essay, Joe wrote, "My definition of leadership is a person or a group of people willing to take action. They take the initiative when no one else will. Leaders need to be courageous, risk takers, and stand up for what they believe in." He lived his life as a true leader, by his own definition, and he will be missed. Carrie Weatherbee Cunningham was on Joe's project team working with the UMass Boston Urban Scholars Program. She writes, "Joe had that rare quality that after talking with him for 15 minutes you felt he understood you better than anyone you'd ever known and he became an instant friend. His smile lit up the room and everything he did was driven by his caring for others- family, friends, and youth- those he worked with and those who would never know what he did on their behalf. I think we all consider ourselves lucky to have been touched by him. I have no doubt that the best parts of Joe will be found in his two young boys." For the many ways in which Joe embodied the Center's vision of collaborative leadership, on June 21, the Center for Collaborative Leadership will be presenting the first annual Leading the Way Award in honor of Joe's memory.

Dr. Sherry Penney Awarded Status of Professor Emerita The Center's founding director, Sherry Penney, has been awarded the status of Professor Emerita at the University of Massachusetts Boston in recognition of her teaching, scholarship, and service. In their letter of award, Chancellor J. Keith Motley and Provost Winston Langley wrote:
You are held in high esteem among your peers for your contributions to the development of emerging business leaders; your impact on UMass Boston, first as its Chancellor (1988-1995; 1996-2000) and then from 2001 as Sherry H. Penney Professor in Leadership and Director of CM's Center for Collaborative Leadership has been transformative. In 1995, you served as Interim President of the University of Massachusetts system. Your retirement in December 2012 thus marks a formal milestone in an illustrious career... It is UMass Boston's privilege at this time to recognize and honor you with the title of Professor Emerita for your invaluable contributions to making our campus a compelling force in the sphere of public higher education.
Lisa DeAngelis at West Point Center for Collaborative Leadership Director, Lisa DeAngelis, was invited to West Point as part the Authentic Leadership Institute (ALI). Led by Nick Craig, President of ALI, DeAngelis was among a select group of facilitators chosen to work with a group of faculty and staff at West Point from February 8 - 10, 2013. The purpose of the visit was to clarify the West Point faculty and staff's strengths, articulate their motivators, and discover their purpose.
DeAngelis states, "Those at West Point clearly understand leadership in a way that many of us never will. Their decisions truly do have life or death implications. And yet, this group was quickly able to drill down to the essence of who they are and their unique leadership gifts. By the end of the weekend they were already thinking about ways to integrate this into their current role at West Point."
The Authentic Leadership Institute works with a wide variety of organizations to deliver extraordinary programs to shift the effectiveness of leaders and build the foundations of effective organizations. ALI programs help individuals increase their self-awareness and learn how to leverage their unique gifts as leaders.

| Opportunities | Tech Apprentice Program The Tech Apprentice program is a paid summer internship program for tech-savvy Boston public high school students interested in pursuing careers in information technology. Founded in 2006, its pilot summer began with just 25 BPS students interning at a handful of technology companies in the Boston-area. Since then it has grown to securing internship placements for over 100 students each summer with nearly 74 companies participating to date. The program boasts a high success rate: 98% of its students attend college and 78% pursue IT majors/careers. What makes this program successful? Students already possess many of the advanced technology skills that the companies are looking for -- hence hiring the students is a value-add for the company rather than just a form of community service. If you would like to hire students, please fill out the job order form link. For more information about how to get involved, please contact: Olu Ibrahim, Boston Private Industry Council.
