Greetings!

Raul Porras The Center for Collaborative Leadership is now recruiting for the 2014 cohort of Emerging Leaders. Do you know someone who would benefit from joining this amazing network, and develop their career with intense leadership training? Nominate them by March 20. top

Fellow alums had this to say:

My participation in this program has changed my thinking of what is possible when committed, diverse, and skilled individuals come together on issues. -Carol Choi '04

The speakers were motivational and inspiring.  It was a life changing experience.  I feel as though I will be a stronger leader having been here. -Gregory Wilmot '05

The Emerging Leaders Program has broadened my network and provided access to many individuals and corporations throughout the Boston area that I would not have otherwise met. -Jodi Wolin '06

Participating in this program has benefited my career by providing me with additional tools for leadership development, exposing me to a fantastic network of individuals, and introducing me to a tremendous group of peers. -Michael Rawan '07

Working with such a diverse group, all of whom are motivated and want to lead, was extremely powerful. -Derrick Mann '10

Reflect back on your experience. What did you gain from the program that you'd like to see passed along to another? You can help, and all you need to do is fill out the on-line nomination form (by March 20).

Also, please contact me if you have any contacts in HR, diversity or professional development roles at companies that have not yet participated in the program if you think leadership development will enhance their workforce.

Sincerely,

Raul Porras

Lisa DeAngelis and Earl Martin Phalen What we learned from Michael Brown and Earl Martin Phalen

What do City Year CEO Michael Brown and Reach Out and Read CEO Earl Martin Phalen have in common? Apparently, they both would have made excellent lawyers. During the 2013 ELP Forum at City Year on January 17, fellows heard from Michael Brown and Earl Martin Phalen. In the course of hearing their stories, we learned that both attended Harvard Law School, and both had plans on pursuing law as a career.  It seems they led parallel lives as each also had a pivotal moment during the course of their education that influenced them to walk away from such a lucrative career.

For Brown, it was interning for then Representative Leon Panetta. Representative Panetta exposed Brown to an idea that would change his life: National Service. For Phalen, it was volunteering at an orphanage in Haiti as a school teacher. Those crucible moments allowed for each to take a risk and follow their passion. For Brown, it was co-founding City Year with his college roommate Alan Khazei, and for Phalen, it was starting BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life). Each is an extremely successful nonprofit organization that really does change the lives of young people.

Phip Carver with Mayor Menino Philip J. Carver
Associate Director, Community Relations & Economic Development at the University of Massachusetts Boston

Since its inception, UMass Boston has been defined as a university with a particular "urban mission," whose teaching, research and service programs would serve the local public and engage in thoughtful ways with the community.  The University has committed itself to a Vision Statement articulating the university's public responsibilities, including "devoting a high proportion of research and public service activities to the cultural, social and economic development of the Commonwealth and the global community; and dedicating itself especially to understanding and improving the environment and the wellbeing of citizens of this region."

The Center for Collaborative Leadership is a prime example of the University's commitment to making a meaningful investment in our city.  The Emerging Leaders Program is a valuable tool for the future leaders of Greater Boston and is a model in collaborative leadership training.

The benefits that I have reaped from my involvement in the Emerging Leaders Program are ones that I still profit from seven years after the fact.  I have made lifelong friends and valuable business contacts that otherwise would not have presented themselves to me. For this, and many more reasons, I donate to the Sherry H. Penney Leadership Fund.
