Greetings!

Jeff SwartzWe are just a few weeks away from the Changing the Face of Leadership luncheon celebrating the graduation of the 2012 Emerging Leaders Program fellows and welcoming the new 2013 cohort of fellows. The luncheon is on November 7th at the Park Plaza Hotel. Our keynote speaker is Jeff Swartz, former CEO of Timberland. Jeff spent the last 26 years at The Timberland Company, a global brand of footwear and apparel, the last 15 years as CEO.  He was the third generation of his family to lead the company.  Having sold the business to VF Corporation in September 2011, Jeff now primarily focuses his time on sustainable social change, both in Israel and in the United States. He has truly set the stage for effective leadership with a moral compass.

Fellows in the 2012 and 2013 cohorts can attend as our guests; please email [email protected] to RSVP.

Tickets are $100 each. Please click here to register with your Visa or Mastercard, or send in the RSVP card with your check or credit card information. RSVP deadline is October 25, we hope to see you there!

Georgianna Melendez talks about the importance of Paying it Forward
Georgianna Melendez '04 talks about the importance of Paying it Forward

Have you contributed to the 2012-2013 Pay it Forward Campaign yet? To date, 47 alums have donated, and we've raised a total of $4,800. That is enough money to provide financial support to one nonprofit potential fellow. Let's strive to make it to $9,000 to provide enough for three. Did you realize the program loses 2-3 nonprofit fellows each year because of their organization's lack of finances? For those who haven't donated, consider those nonprofit fellows in your cohort that you got to know. They would not have been there without your support (including Georgianna Melendez '04 - listen to her message).

We look forward to announcing the results of the campaign at the 11th Anniversary Luncheon on November 7. In addition to the funding for nonprofit fellows that this raises, it is also a powerful way to demonstrate to our stakeholders the value that we, as graduates, place in the Emerging Leaders Program.  We are targeting 100% alumni participation.  If you haven't donated already, please click here to do so and help your cohort be the first to reach 100%.

Finally, a Silent Auction will be held at the 11th Anniversary Luncheon and we need your help to gather the best contributions possible.  Please take a few minutes to think of anything that you may have to donate or individuals or companies in your network which might be willing to donate. Popular items include sports, theatre or other event tickets, wine, golf/fishing outings (generally these are separate outings), and time at vacation homes or timeshares...but also think outside the box, items/opportunities which people might not otherwise have access to are great for raising funds for ELP.  Please contact me at [email protected] with questions, ideas and potential items for the silent auction.

Alternatively, you can download a template and the 501 (c3) letter to request items from organizations on our behalf.

Sincerely,

Julie Burke-Blanchard

Team Project Presentations

Emerging Leaders Program's 2012 Team Projects Presentation
Emerging Leaders Program's 2012 Team Project Presentation

On October 3, 2012 the Emerging Leaders Program presented the findings from the 2012 team projects.  Supporting Healthy Lives and Vibrant Places was hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Representatives from each team presented. They were: Kara Boniface, MassBio; Jenna Dodd, Boston Globe; Kelly Dougherty, Tufts Medical Center; Ryan Dunlevy, Rapid7; Charles Smith, Eastern Bank; and Mila Thigpen, Celebrity Series. A panel including John Auerbach, Commissioner, Department of Public Health; Aaron Gornstein, Undersecretary, Department of Housing and Community Development; Donna Latson Gittens, Founder & CEO MORE Advertising; and Jacqueline P. Palladino, Senior Vice President, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston responded to the findings. Each of the panelists agreed that there is a need for emerging leaders to be civically engaged, and they were impressed by the scope of the projects and the work the teams had done on behalf of their clients.

Linda Kowalcky, Deputy Director for Institutional Sector Management of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, gave closing remarks on behalf of the Mayor's office. In her statement, she noted several value propositions of the Emerging Leaders Program that are critically needed in today's organizations. They include: fostering leadership development; building networks across sectors; and leadership that reflects the diversity of the city of Boston.
