President's Message
|
by Mike Hinton, Redwood Region President
I always have mixed feelings about December. On the one hand, it's a great time to attend fun parties and meet up with old and new friends. And it's always enjoyable to check out everyone's Christmas decorations. On the other hand, daylight hours are short, the weather tends towards cold and damp, and there are no autocross events!
I'm anxiously awaiting next March, when the 2016 autocross season kicks off. It will be interesting to see what kind of devilish courses our two new course designers, Drew Powers and Chip Witt, can conjure up. If we're really fortunate, the long-term resident hay bales will have found a new home too.
One good thing about the break in autocross season is the ability to do required maintenance, and install the latest tweaks on the cars. I'm working on repairing the turn signal/dimmer switch on Barney. Currently, I can get the high beams to work, but not the low beams. Fortunately, the driving lights I installed last winter are an adequate substitute for the low beams. Of course, accessing the turn signal switch requires steering wheel removal, which for me, meant new tool purchases (I didn't have the required 27mm socket). Guess what? That 27mm nut is on TIGHT! After many attempts, and generous amounts of colorful language, I finally wedged a 2X4 through the steering wheel to immobilize it. Success followed shortly. Now I just need to see if I can repair the switch, or pay a couple hundred dollars for a new one. I'll let you know how it went.
On another note, the Redwood Region Holiday Party is rapidly approaching. The Flamingo Hotel in Santa Rosa will be hosting the event, and the appetizer and dinner choices sound delicious. Time is running out to register, so visit the Redwood Region website or see the flyer below, and click on the link to the party to register.
On behalf the Board, I hope that you all have an enjoyable Holiday season, and that the next few weeks will be full of good food, good friends, and much happiness for you and your loved ones.
Mike

by Jamie DeRuiter, der Riesenbaum Editor
What a great year this has been. I learned a lot about my car this year at autocross and can't wait to fine tune my suspension next year after finally getting it setup correctly. I ran on racing tires this year and had to put them on and take them off at each event. Next year I plan on going less aggressive and driving to the events on the tires I will race with. That should save me a lot of time and effort. I wanted to see how close I could come to the coveted Top Time of Day (TTOD). My car runs well I just need a lot more seat time to hone my skills.
It's been a lot of fun publishing the newsletter this year. I look forward to this next year and the stories I get to share with everyone. If there's something you'd like to see in our newsletter please contact me. There won't be a newsletter in January next year since not much is going on in the dead of winter. I'll share the holiday party with everyone in the February issue which looks to be a very fun event (see the flyer below).
Keep warm and make sure to pamper your Porsche through this winter so you can hit the road this coming spring with a happy car. I'm getting ready to do a full tune up on my 912 just to make sure my car is in tip top condition heading into 2016. Is it March yet?!?
Shift Toward Adventure,
Jamie

Autocrossing with Harry Albers
| by Chip Witt We are always happy to see new faces at any of our Redwood Region events, but I personally derive a great deal of satisfaction seeing new faces on autocross days. I try to encourage all members, new and long-standing, to embrace their inner adventurer's spirit and come out to an autocross so that my good friends and I can share our passion with them. Our last autocross for the season was held on October 3, 2015, and we were happy to see Harry Albers join us for the morning sessions as a first-timer.
Harry is a relatively new member to the Redwood Region and has made it out to a few of our driving tours already this year. You may have seen him introduced as a new member or spoken with him briefly on one of these excursions. He's a very nice guy and was gracious enough to allow me to fire a few questions his way to find out a bit more about him and his first experience autocrossing.
dR:
How long have you been a PCA member? How long with the Redwood Region?
Harry:
I have been a member of the Redwood Region and PCA for only about three months.
dR:
What Porsche(s) do you (or have previously) owned? How long have (did) you had it (have them)?
Harry:
I got my first Porsche, a 2003 Boxster basic, five months ago.
dR:
What originally led you to join the PCA?
Harry:
I wanted to drive my Boxster more and meet other people who enjoyed the marque as much as I do. I live in Santa Rosa and was happy to join the Redwood Region to address both of those wants.
dR:
Have you attended other club events, and if so, which ones? Did you bring a guest (your wife/significant other) with you for any of them? Did you have fun?
Harry:
I did the tour to the Wine Caves, and my wife and I both enjoyed it.
dR:
How did you first hear about autocrossing with the club?
Harry:
I saw information about it in an email from the club.
dR:
When you first heard about autocrossing, what were your thoughts? Were you immediately interested? Did you have any concerns that gave you cause for hesitation?
Harry:
I thought it would be fun. Nothing beyond that really came to mind.
dR:
What did you get out of the day? Learn anything specific? Did anything about the day surprise you?
Harry:
I learned how to drive on the track (with in-car instruction from Bob Schoenherr) and enjoyed watching how other drivers approached it. I learned a lot about the rules. The only surprise was in how fast some of the drivers/cars could run the track.
dR:
Did you have fun? Will you come out again? Would you recommend autocrossing to your friends and family? Why?
Harry:
Yes, yes and yes. Simply put, it is a fun thing to do.
dR:
Sounds like you had a lot of fun! We're glad you came out and joined us for the last one of the season. Certainly hope that you plan on coming out again with us next year.
Harry provided the picture you see above of him with his car. Harry, thank you for answering our questions, providing the picture and for your participation in our events. We're happy to have you. Welcome to the Redwood Region of the Porsche Club of America!

Redwood History - December 1982
|
Betty Thomas was in charge of Casino Night which was a great success raising over $1,000 for Marindale School. The last rally of the year saw 15 cars turn out for a nice, leisurely (?) drive through the Fairfield - Vacaville countryside with 14 cars finishing (no comment about what happened to the car that didn't finish).
Newly elected officers for 1983 were Emmett Wilder, President; Harold Allen, Vice-President; Chase Heckman, Secretary; and Larraine Glaze, Treasurer. Planning for the 1983 Autocross Season was under way by co-directors John Byrne and Stan Michelman.

 | Red Puma driving shoes in as new condition. Size 10 - but Puma's run small and narrow so you would have to try them on to see if they work for you (they do not fit me any longer)!
These shoes are NOT FIREPROOF and cannot be used for competition, but would be good for autocross. If they fit, they are yours for free.
