President's Message

vern rogers headshot 2011
by Vern Rogers, Redwood Region President

First let me say thank you to the Board Members who have served with me over the past three years...it has been an honor. An exceptional job has been done by all of you, and I want to especially single out those who have gone above and beyond by taking on not only one job, but two, or three.

Jerry Gladstone has done and amazing job as Treasurer and for the last 24, and now 25 issues, Newsletter Co-Editor. He always goes the extra mile, whether it be finding new ways to save the Region money, or making sure dR articles are delivered on time. Thank you Jerry!

Barbara McCrory has done an equally fantastic job as not only Webmaster, but like Jerry, as Newsletter Co-Editor. Her quiet support and endless hours spent on these as well as other tasks is very much appreciated. Thank you Barbara!

Bob Schoenherr has been Membership Director, Autocross Co-Director, and Autocross Chief Instructor for this time as well. I am always impressed with how Bob juggles his instructor duties to assure that all who need AX help get it. Thank you Bob!

Before going on to specifically acknowledge other Board members, I need to take a moment to give thanks for my sweet wife, Susan, without whom I would not have been able to give so much time and effort to the Region. She had been a steady supporter over these three years and has always encouraged me to hold to my vision. THANK YOU my dear!

This Region only thrives through the efforts of its volunteers, and the continued participation of our members.  It has been a privilege to serve as your President, and to have such competent and enthusiastic Directors on the Board.  Big thanks to Mike Hinton, Craig Steele, David Bunch, Don Magdanz, Grady Carter, Simone Kopitzki, Mac Cranford, James Heisey, Greg Maissen , Kurt Fischer and Scott Downie.  I also want to thank my first VP Chris Harrell who was so valuable in helping me determine my vision that first year. I could not have done this without the support I got from all of you!

I want to thank and congratulate Chip Witt for being elected our new Secretary, and Tom Short for stepping into the role of our 2015 Membership Director.  As per our Bylaws, the position of Membership Director is filled by appointment at next year's first Board meeting. I am sure that as long as Tom is still willing, he will be appointed at the January meeting. Gentlemen, thank you for stepping up.

I had the opportunity at this year's Holiday Party to bring a new ceremony to the transition of the Region Presidency.  I secretly prepared 26 different 8.5x11 sheets of heavy card stock with the names of each President the Region has had since our inception on January 20, 1969 (1). (Thank you Barbara for the list of Presidents.) These were put into sealed, numbered manila envelopes and handed to attendees of the party with instructions to not open until told to do so. Just as the dessert course was about to be served, I had all attendees with envelopes come to the stage and arrange themselves in number order. Once in order, I had them all open their envelopes and hold the presidential sheet in front of them.  We now had the names and terms of all Redwood Presidents running from left to right across the stage. One thing remained. I had Craig Steele (holding envelope #1) unwrap a Presidential Scepter that I had constructed from an aluminum 991 Turbo model, and a 928 hood shock (donated by Tom Strobel).  Once unwrapped, the scepter was passed from "President" to "President" all the way from 1969 to 2014 (me), and I presented it to Mike.  Presidential transition completed. See picture below:

Presidential Transition                photo by Sandy Steele, photo editing by Vern Rogers

Before signing off, I would like to ask you all to support the 2015 Redwood Region Board of Directors and the Club just as vigorously has you have over the past three years of my Presidency.  They have an exciting year of activities already planned, and room for more should you have an addition.  We always need more volunteers as many hands make light work.  Please come out and support your Region.

Lastly, please know that I am not leaving Redwood and will serve as the most Recent Past President until Mike's successor is elected.  Hopefully that will be a few years.  My role will be mostly that of an advisor and mentor to Mike, but I will also lead an event or two, as well as attend many of them.

That's all for now. Down the road (wearing a different hat).

Vern

(1) Ed. The Club was first formed in June 1966 as the Tamalpias Porsche Club. The name was legally changed to the Redwood Region - Porsche Club of America in January 1969.

2015 Election Results
There were 108 ballots submitted in Redwood Region's November election. The official results were:

President:  Michael Hinton
Vice President: Craig Steele
Treasurer: Jerry Gladstone
Secretary: Chip Witt

Along with Vern Rogers, immediate Past President, these are the elected officers who will serve as the Executive Committee in 2015. All other Board of Director positions are filled by appointment and will be announced after the January 2015 Board Meeting.

From the Editors

by Jerry Gladstone, der Riesenbaum Co-Editor

Barbara McCrory, pictured to the right, and I have now completed 25 issues of der Riesenbaum as Co-Editors. We assumed these roles on a temporary basis when our previous Editor, Chris Harrell, relocated to Southern California as a consequence of his career. We were to serve as interim Co-Editors for a maximum of six months until a new Editor was found. Obviously that did not happen and we just stayed on. As previously announced, this is Barbara and my last issue as we will be limiting ourselves in 2015 to our primary roles of Webmaster and Treasurer, respectively.

The future of der Riesenbaum is unknown at this time. Surely it will be missed if not published and the Club might encounter some difficulties in communicating with our over 550 members. This is your chance to step up and help the Club in an important capacity. It is an interesting an rewarding job, give either of us a call and we will fill you in on the duties and details. We are of course always available to help get you started.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year,

2014 Holiday Party - Saturday, December 13, 2014

by Jerry Gladstone, Redwood Region Treasurer, photos by Craig and Sandy Steele

The 2014 Redwood Region Holiday Party was held on Saturday evening, December 13, 2014. The beautiful and scenic Nourish Grill at the Harbor Point Tennis Club was once again the site of the annual party. The 74 attendees, all wearing their festive holiday best, started to arrive around 6:00 pm for a social hour and CASA's silent auction. The wine and cocktails flowed abundantly lubricating conversations and greetings while we snacked on an elegant fruit and cheese display. Old friendships were renewed and new ones formed. It was great to see people we had not seen in a while.

Simone, Sandy and Susan Checked Us In
Fruit and Cheese at Cocktail Hour

The sit-down dinner started with an Arugula salad topped with shaved Manchego cheese; it was followed by one's choice of prime rib, trout or vegetarian lasagna. Everyone raved about their food which was both delicious and quite ample. As everyone brought a bottle or two or three of their favorite wine to share, there was much fine drink to accompany dinner. Afterwards we had a desert of chocolate pot de creme that was outrageously good.

Deven's 6-Liter Bottle of Wine
Kurt and Philippa got the dancing started

Just before desert was served, Vern Rogers presided over a novel review of past Redwood Presidents spanning all the way back to the origins of the Region. The ceremony concluded with the passing of the "presidential scepter" from Vern to our new President, Mike Hinton. Read more about the ceremony in Vern's column above. Vern also presented CASA with Redwood Region's annual donation check in the amount of $4500, a $500 increase over last year's donation. The silent auction raised about $1000 thus netting CASA about $5500 in total for the evening.

Once again we had Todd Morgan and the Emblems provide live and lively dance music. Todd is a fantastic musical talent and entertainer inspiring most people to get out on the dance floor and shake it. The music was rock with a flavor of Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis too. Wow, can Todd play that keyboard.

As the evening wound down at about 11:00 pm, most people headed for home. Some though, stayed at local hotels that offered special PCA rates for the night.

If you have never been to a Redwood Region Holiday Party, you have missed a really great time. Be sure to get it on your calendar for next December.

 Porsche Rennsport Reunion V Update
Tom Short
by Tom Short, Redwood Region Member

Headline: Plan your trip to Porsche Rennsport Reunion V - tickets available now!

In case you haven't heard, Porsche is bringing their world-class festival of speed back to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in October 2015. My wife and I attended last time it was here in 2011 and we were both blown away by the quality of the event. It truly demonstrates PCNA's commitment to the owners, fans and enthusiasts of the world's greatest sports cars. And if you've never heard the roar of a group of 917s heading into Laguna Seca's famous corkscrew, flinging themselves into one of racing's most spectacular corners, the Porsche Rennsport Reunion will give you a chance to experience this thrill of a lifetime.

Once I heard the news about the event's return in 2015 I immediately checked out the event website to see about getting tickets. The first time I visited the site back in October there was a full rundown of the available ticket packages, which range from one-day general admission passes all the way up to three-day VIP packages. Then PCNA decided to remove this information leaving me wondering when I would be able to buy tickets.

It turns out all I had to do was call the track ticket office at (831) 242-8200. The nice woman there said she didn't know why PCNA took the ticket information down, but she'd be happy to take my order. So order I did, securing a couple of Saturday and Sunday tickets for my wife and I. We already have our hotel room booked in Carmel, and we're looking forward to enjoying another excellent, world-class Porsche Rennsport Reunion - right here in our "backyard" in Northern California. Does it get any better?

Hope to see you there.

Concours 2014 - A trip to Canepa

by Steve McCrory, Redwood Region Member, photos by Barbara McCrory, Webmaster   Steve McCrory & Porsche

Bruce Canepa grew up in Santa Cruz fascinated from an early age with all things automotive. He began his racing experience in quarter midgets and go karts and moved on to sprint cars.  Working in his family's dealership, he learned mechanical and fabrication skills, as well as the business skills required for a successful automotive enterprise.

1978 found Canepa involved in IMSA and Trans-Am, and a year later he began his Porsche racing experience in a 934 1/2.  In 1979 he co-drove with Rick Mears and Monte Shelton to a third place overall finish at the 24 hours of Daytona. From then on Canepa often drove Porsche race cars, and many are featured in the museum area.

Just two of the many cars on display included the Pikes Peak open-wheel racer with a twin turbo 450 horsepower motor, weighing in at 1,000 pounds, and the 917-10 car with aluminum frame and 1150 to 1400 horsepower, depending on where the driver sets the boost control.  Zero to 150 mph in 5.5 seconds brings new meaning to the concept of acceleration.  Several of the cars displayed here can still be seen in action at Vintage Racing events.

The Restoration Shop began in 1980, and is filled with cars as varied as 356s and 959s to Lamborghinis and Duesenbergs and classic hot rods.  Body and paint, fabrication, mechanical work, upholstery and final detailing and testing are accomplished under one roof.  Almost all of the for sale inventory has been purchased by Canepa and restored or detailed to the highest standards.  If you are an enthusiast, there is something special to see at every turn.

For Sale / Offer tires.

Sumitomo HTR Z III. 225/40/18 (2) and 285/30/18 (2). They are on a set of GT3 wheels that I purchased for my GT3 and are not the correct size.

Previous owner of the wheels had them installed on his 993. I think the size is correct for some 996 model from 2002 MY. Tires are still mounted on wheels but will dismount the tires soon. Tires have approximately 2,000 miles according to original owner. In Marin . $200 / offer

Porsche Factory Boxster Short Shifter
Porsche Factory Boxster/911 Short Shift Console/Kit - $350

For sale is a less than 8,000 mile used but like new factory Porsche short shift kit, part number 997-424-983-00.  The kit reduces shift throw distance by up to 35% on the 986 & 996 cars (somewhat less on the 996 & 997 cars).
I put it in my 2004 Boxster S and it took about 1.5 hours, the biggest part of the time was spent removing the center console.  It's pretty straight-forward and lots of videos and instructions online.  IMHO, it's one of the most best performance improvements you can make for the money and feels much tighter than the stock shifter assembly.  I got a good deal on a GT3 shift console so I replaced my short-shifter with that (and it actually has a longer throw, just a different feel).  It is slightly firm to engage 1st gear when cold however it warms up quickly and is so much nicer overall.
The kit/console retails for ~$505.  As I understand it, the kit will work on 986, 987, 996, and 997, and Cayman models through 2012.
Phone:  415-889-3755  mail:  aron.smetana@gmail.com
Price:  $350 w/ Petaluma or San Rafael pickup, will ship for additional cost
I want to give my 38 years of Panoramas  to  whomever wants them. Hopefully someone would be able to utilize them  in a learning/teaching situation about Porsches.

They are in Santa Rosa, please come pick them up.

BBS LM Wheel for Porsche
Authentic BBS LM Wheel for Porsche 18" x 9.5" et55 5x130 Bolt Pattern - $800
I have one spare, authentic BBS LM wheel for sale. It is 18" x 9.5" et55 with standard 5x130 Porsche bolt pattern. It fits perfectly as a rear wheel on 986 Boxsters, but also can work on 993 and 996 narrow body models. New these wheels run close to $1000 each plus shipping and sales tax. They are also made to order and take time for delivery. These wheels are period appropriate to '90s and early '00s Porsches and are considered by many as the most desirable aftermarket wheels.

Spec: 1 Rear Wheel: 18" x 9.5" et 55
Condition: Like-New and never mounted. There are two small knicks in the lip from being moved around in storage, otherwise it is pristine and clean enough to eat off of.  Price: $800 firm. (+ shipping and PayPal fees if not local)

Local buyers with cash-in-hand preferred (SF Bay Area), but I am willing to ship these at the buyer's expense. Contact me at jgwaen@gmail.com or 510-882-6745.
