President's Message
|
by Vern Rogers, Redwood Region President
Well we have finally gotten rain. It certainly had an impact on last month's run to the Two Bird Café. 53 people were signed up prior to the day, and 9 folks actually did the drive. To be fair to all that decided to skip it, we did encounter some pretty challenging road conditions and as such the pace was anything but spirited. Thanks go out to Kurt Fischer, our lead on the route, for being safety minded.
I also want to thank Deven, Dana, Greg, Nick, Thorsten, Brad, Byron and Valerie from Hi Tec for a great Tech Session last month. The level of detail, the down-to-earth practical presentations, as well as the fun toys presented and on display were very entertaining and informative. The food was also very good. Thanks All!

By the time you read this we will have had our annual Whale to Whale Tail Rally to the Pt. Arena Lighthouse. I am sure that this event will have the legendary creative activities always provided by Bob Schoenherr and Anita Benzing. See below for an after the event article.
March also brings our first Autocross of the year. My '83 SC (Bruno) is getting ready for not only this, but for my first DE ever. I have replaced my old brake lines with stainless steel braid, added performance brake pads, as well as finally installing a bump steer kit. Thank you Tom Strobel for all your help in getting this accomplished! I am still working on getting a set of seats into the car that are both comfortable and low enough to accommodate my 6 foot tall frame when wearing a helmet. I started with fiberglass racing seats, changed back to the stock seats (recovered with assistance from a friend of Mr. Strobel), and tried some vintage Recaros -- none of these were quite right. Just last week I found and purchased a set of ('81-'84) Porsche sport seats. These will be recovered in the next week or so. The good news is that I have gotten very good at swapping out seats, but I do hope this is the end of the search.
I know that many Redwood members have done DE (Driver Education) events in the past. I have autocrossed for 6 years now, so I guess it is about time for me. PCA Driver Education (High Speed) events include, and in fact require, an instructor to be in the passenger seat until the driver is certified to drive solo. The ones run by the Golden Gate Region also provide both driver and instructor with headsets and microphones for in-car communications. I will be attending the GGR DE at Thunderhill in Willows, CA on March 29 and 30.
Most of you know that I not only have Bruno, but an '05 Carrera. Some of you may be wondering why I would take the 'old' Porsche to a high speed track event instead of the 997. Once I have been on the track and been passed on straightaways by car after car I may change my mind, but for now, I want the feel that I know I can get from my SC. No ABS, no traction control, no power steering. What that this leaves me with is a deeper connection to the road and to the car. An '83 SC is anything but a point-and-shoot vehicle. I am really looking forward to improving my ability to actually drive. I believe the car already knows how to.
On a completely different note, I would like to appeal to Redwood members that have attended Porsche Parade in the past to contact me and/or our newsletter editors. We are hoping to be able to present articles from now until June that will assist our general membership in understanding what the experience of Parade is all about and how to get the most out of it. Please share your experiences and knowledge with the rest of us. Monterey is so close and I hope that many, many of us will attend. Remember that events can be previewed on the website now, prior to registration opening up. I urge you all to take a look. Remember that the opening of registration has changed from what it was last month. Registration for Parade now opens on April 1st. See below for further information.
That's all for now.Down the road,
Vern

Tech Session at Hi Tec Automotive - February 18, 2014
|
by Greg Maissen, Past President, Redwood Region and Hi Tec Employee
On a unseasonably warm and sunny winter day, 40 plus PCA members along with a dozen or so soon to be PCA members came out for a tech session at Hi Tec Automotive.
The morning started off with plenty of good food and coffee to help jump start navigating ones way through all the rare and unique Porsches on hand ranging from vintage 356s to new Redwood Region member Craig Todd's race prepped 997.2 GT3. RR member Mike Beavers was scheduled to bring his new 991 GT3 to the tech session, but Porsche instructed him not to drive his car as it seems that a handful of 991 GT3s have caught on fire and as of now Porsche is not conclusive as to the cause.
After admiring all of the hardware parked around the building, everyone gathered inside the shop where Deven Wailes introduced himself and the Hi Tec crew. Deven then proceeded to give a tutorial on an incredible 1959 356 Polopolous Porsche that was on loan from one of our customers. The "Polo" Porsches are primarily known as the engine that started life as a 6 cylinder 911 with 2 cylinders removed making it into a 4 cylinder; commonly known as a "Polo 4". It weighs 100 pounds less than the six, has twice the power of the original four and is very reliable. This particular Polo also had a 911 drive train and suspension which required the rear fenders to be widened to accommodate the track of the car. This car drives and handles unlike any 356. I was fortunate enough to be able to drive this special car. At first shifting a 901 5-speed transmission in a 356 seems alien, but with the way the engine revs it all fits together. The suspension completely transforms the car, which of course is most appreciated in the turns. This is a very sophisticated hot rod with a very sophisticated price tag.
A 2010 Boxster Spyder was next put on the lift to demonstrate what is involved in a thorough mechanical inspection. This particular Spyder just had the exhaust replaced with a titanium Remus sport exhaust system. Many members were impressed with the sound it produced; it reminded them of finely tuned race car.
Next up, Deven had a 996 manual transmission on the stand and demonstrated that indeed you can rebuild them rather than having to spend twice as much to outright replace one, as is recommended by Porsche. A sigh of relief could be heard from the crowd.
We then went next door to our expanded location known as Hi Tec 2 to see Tom Edwards' beautiful black '67 911S; Tom's car was put on the lift for a inspection. Dana Wailes then instructed the group on many technical matters one of which was the over dramatized IMS failure ( Intermediate Shaft Bearing). For many in the group it was reassuring to properly understand how a failure can occur and what measures can be taken before and after an incident.
As things began to wind down the consensus was that everyone had a great time with lots of information, cars and food shared. A special thank you to Holger Seibert for bringing authentic German pretzles from Pure Grain Bakery | Hi Tec Tech Session 2014 Video by Bob Schoenherr |

Whale to Whale Tail Rallye -- March 8, 2014
|
Story and photos by Bob Schoenherr, Redwood Region Membership Director
Our 4th annual Whale to Whale Tail Rallye was attended by 26 Redwood region members in 17 Porsches ranging in vintage from model year 1969 to 2011. Anita and I had a great time organizing this run as we have a beautiful roads, a great coastline and an end point that delivers lots of California personality.
We started from our usual spot at Kaffe Mocha on Airport Boulevard in Santa Rosa. We wound our way around the airport to River Road eventually arriving at Highway 1 and then on to the Point Arena Lighthouse. Many other people were also enjoying the outdoors on this beautiful day; we saw many bicyclists, joggers, and other locals and tourists enjoying the day.
 | Stopping in Jenner
|
 | "Queenie" in her "Whale" Livery
|
To start the day we passed out puzzle piece number 1, thus giving our tour members something to contemplate as we began the drive.Additional puzzle pieces were passed out at various stops with the final piece being obtained at the Point Arena Lighthouse. The puzzle was information on a famous Porsche, "Moby Dick". David Bunch was the first to figure out that Moby was the winning answer! Moby Dick was quite a car, check it out at this link: Moby Dick A joy of the day was seeing a variety of Northern California's wildlife along the way; we saw red-tailed hawks, Merlins, and sea lions. When we arrived at the lighthouse everyone settled into an afternoon of watching whales passing by one after another showing us their spouts, flukes and dorsal fins. We saw a countless numbers of whales this year; it really made up for those years that we saw only one or two.The weather and time of year really played a role in enhancing the whale watching.

One thing that we tried this year was to give everyone a tour memento. The magnetic card was really cherished by those who had already been on one or more of our WtWR tours. We had new members and old timers, like Essy Fariab who only missed one of the tours. Essy's comment," I really appreciate having something to remind me of a tour that is so much fun each year." Thanks to the Point Arena Lighthouse staff, Julian and Briana, for make our visit entertaining and informative. Anita and I also want to thank Vern and Susan for the lighthouse gifts - it really added to our day. Can't wait till next year to see what our wonderful Northern California coast brings us. Autocross Rule Changes for 2014
|
by Grady Carter, Redwood Region Autocross Director
For the folks who are planning to classify their car for Zone 7 autocross events this year, there has been a change in the classification rules. Zone 7 will now be using PCA Parade Rules instead of the Golden Gate Region's (GGR) "Point" classification method.
This change will apply to Zone 7 class standings only. Redwood Region will continue using the GGR point classification method that we have been using for the last 3 years.
A quick guide:
- If you do not want to classify your car you are a FUN class person, so ignore this and just come out to our events and have fun!
- If you want to try for season-long bragging rights in the Redwood Region, please classify your car at the GGR website and come on out to rack up those points.
- If want to run for points in the Zone 7 events, please classify your car under the new Zone 7 rules. For Redwood that will be the April 5th and 6th events.
-
If you want to run for points in both Zone 7 and the Redwood Region on April 5thand/or 6th you will need to have both classifications on your registration card each day you run.

Porsche Parade Monterey 2014

Porsche Parade 2014 - Get Ready for Registration
First - make sure that your PCA login works. You don't want to have to contact PCA Headquarters on the first day of registration.
Registration opens on April 1, 2014 (no foolin'), This Parade will be very popular, but ALL entries will be accepted. Organizers state that all entrants can be accommodated at each of the banquets and all competitive events, as well as most activities. Tours on some days will sell out however.
So between now and April 1, you should look through the Parade website to get as much information as possible to plan your week and be ready for registration. There will be a lot of choices (banquets, competitive events, tours, etc.) to make during the registration process - allow at least 45 minutes to complete.
Check out the Parade 2014 Schedule - there are many events to choose from and opportunities to volunteer. There are four competitive events held at Parade: Concours TSD Rally Autocross Tech Quiz
Don't forget to check out the Kids Activities and Other Events and Activities. The "Other" tab will take you to the many social aspects of Parade - historic displays, tours, and my favorite, The Parade Gimmick Rally. As of 3/3/2014 not all tabs are completely populated, but this changes every day. Check the Downloads & Forms tab - this is where you will find the PCRS when they are ready..
The Hyatt Regency is the headquarters, hotel and rooms cannot be booked there until you have completed the Parade Registration process. This will be done online. When you complete the Parade Registration process, a Hyatt reservation code will be provided to you and then you can make a room reservation at the Hyatt.
The lodging tab on the website identifies 4 other hotels that you can checkout now. Expect rates to be lower on the weekdays and higher on Friday and Saturday nights.
Consider volunteering to make the Parade a great event.
Want to know what happened last year? Check out the 2013 Parade schedule and activities at parade2013.pca.org
Here is a pdf which helps explain the process.

Member Profile: Essy Fariab and his 944
|
by Bill Newton, Redwood Region Member; photos by Essy Fariab
Essy Fariab recently made an interesting decision regarding his selection of autocross cars: he retired his 911 and acquired a 944. Essy tells the story this way, "It all started in July 2012 when my yellow 1973 911 turned 40 years old. For more than two decades this was the car I mainly used for racing and autocrossing, and occasionally street/club tour events. I decided to retire her and removed the rollbar and restored the interior back to stock condition."
 |
Essy and his Yellow 1973 911
|
"I was searching for a more affordable prepared race car that I could push hard on the track and in autocross events and not be too worried about breaking or crashing a vintage 911." At the a Parts Heaven swap meet in 2012 he bought a 1985 Porsche 944mostly prepared for racing.
Essy has been a PCA member for over 27 years, so he is no stranger to Porsches. Previously he also owned a 944 Turbo and a 914. In addition, Essy and his wife, Rosa, own and operate a repair shop in San Francisco, Euro-Japan Auto Works. This well-regarded shop has been theirs' since 1985.
Essy's 944 has extensive suspension modifications: full race suspension, modified brakes, externally adjustable shocks, and a limited slip differential. The engine is mainly stock but has a cam sprocket adjuster to advance the cam timing, sport exhaust header and larger pipes, a sport tuned ECU, and K&N air filter. The 944 produces perhaps as much as 155 hp ( stock was 143) with a car weight of 2700 pounds.
 |
The New/Old Essy Racing Machine
|
 | Rosa and Essy |
In 2013 Essy placed in the top ten in 7 out of 8 Redwood Region autocrosses, including TTOD among all Porsches in March. Quite a nice "return" for a 28 year old vehicle. Since these cars do not produce gobs of horsepower, one might conclude that Essy is an
accomplished driver and his car handles superbly!
As we know, it's the people and the cars in our Club. Essy confirms this, "I've always enjoyed motorsport activities from childhood, but what I truly enjoy and cherish are the PEOPLE I meet and continue a friendship with, including our wonderful PCA members and those in other car clubs."

Redwood History: Celebrating 45 Years!
|
The Redwood Region Porsche Club of America was chartered on January 20, 1969 - 45 years ago. The original member counties were Sonoma, Napa, and Marin. In January 2000 the counties of Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt and Del Norte were added. The original 39 members were from the Tamalpais Porsche Club. The request to form the Region was from John T. Korn, President. The officers for the new Region in 1969 were: John W. Lucas, President Peter Stach, Vice President Beth McClellan, Secretary William Otey, Treasurer John T. Korn, Past President There are six current members of the Redwood Region who joined in 1969 or earlier, Phyllis and Robert Sachs, Allen and Jean Barbieri and James and Janet Brown. Member vehicles from 1969 include one 912 and seven 911's. Of course there could be more - not everyone lists all their cars in the database. |
From CASA: Thank You for Your Donations and Support
|
Redwood Region members raised $1,600 for CASA at the Holiday Party Silent Auction. This is in addition to the $4,000 donation. Congratulations and thank you to all of you who help support this worthy cause.

Zone 7 Volunteer Event - Golden Gate Relay - May 3, 2014
|
Paul Seidel-Smith (porschepaul77@gmail.com) has asked for four or five Porsches to be on display at the start of this event. It would be for the time period from 7:00 am to noon. The start is at the Calistoga Mineral Water Company on May 3rd -- there will be lots going on -- food vendors, team members, support people, and lots of public viewing.

There are 125,000 Americans waiting organs. Twenty people die each day before a donor is found. Paul Czopek, Zone 7 Rep. has requested clubs in the Bay Area to volunteer to assist with this life saving charity event raising awareness and funds for organ transplants. Relay teams are comprised of 12 members who either run or walk 191 miles through 36 checkpoints.
Your help is needed to assist Course Directors at check points by handing out water bottles to runners, assist with incoming traffic in staging area, and direct outgoing runners to start locations. This event starts at the Calistoga Mineral Water Company and ends with a party at the Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz. All volunteers are invited to the party at Santa Cruz Beach so grab a family member or friend to work with you to help a great cause and join in the fun at the end of the Relay.
If you are able to donate your time to help with a check point in your area, please contact the event liaison for the check point list and time schedule. Your help to save lives is greatly appreciated and we hope you have fun participating with this event.

For Sale 2003 Intermeccanica
This was built for an engineer with an eye to duplicate a 1956 GS/GT Speedster. These are built in Vancouver BC with only a limited number built each year. They are the best of the best, and this one is pristine with only 33k miles.
The body is one piece that is bonded & riveted to a boxed frame much like the Porsche 904. It is wonderfully constructed and rivals and even surpasses the originals in many respects. Four wheel disk brakes, IRS suspension, a 2110 cc type 1 engine producing 146 hp, with 150 ft. Lbs. of torque at 5200 rpm. This little gem will not disappoint. These are built by appointment only and the cost to duplicate this is around $70,000.
Asking $43,000. Contact Max Handley Email spyderwerks@comcast.net Tel. 415-435-5299 Cell 415-265-6063 more photos here
