President's Message

vern rogers headshot 2011
by Vern Rogers, Redwood Region President

This is my last President's Message for 2013. What an amazing year for the Redwood Region!

The 1/1 Fun Run on New Year's Day, nine Autocrosses, the Whale to Whale Tail Tour, three Wine Tours, Porsches on the Plaza, Oktoberfest, a three-day NorCal All About the Roads tour, a tech session, the Ledson Concours, a pool party, and four Breakfast/Brunch/Dinner Runs. That makes a total of 24 events, and I have probably left one or more out.

I want to send A BIG Thank You to all the Board and the members who made this amazing set of events such a success. We can look forward to more of the same in 2014. I encourage you all to participate, including bringing new  ideas for events to myself or other Board members.

Publish date for this newsletter has been pushed back a bit to allow for pictures and an article on the 12/7 Redwood Region Holiday Party. Look for these further down the page.

I wish you all very Happy Holidays, and look forward to seeing each and every one of you at a Redwood event next year.

That's all for now...down the road,

Editor's note: Bob Schoenherr produced a slideshow highlighting many of Redwood's 2013 events. Photos and video were provided by many Redwood members; see slide to the right.            To view the slideshow click here.

2013 seems to have gone by faster than a speeding 911! All the wine tours, autocrosses, breakfast runs, dinners, tours and parties are now pleasant memories. Even the very enjoyable Holiday Party has come and gone.

Coverage of the Holiday Party is a featured article in this issue. Also see coverage of an event at Thunderhill Raceway and the Last Gasp Tour. This issue contains information on a number of events coming up in 2014, the first of which is the One-One-Fun Run on New Year's Day. Be sure to check them out.

Barbara and I have completed an entire year as interim co-editors; seems like time to call ourselves just co-editors from this point on. David Yusem joined us in the latter part of the year as an assistant editor - help we greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year,

Hi Tec Ad 2011

2013 Redwood Region Holiday Party
by Mike Hinton, Redwood Region Vice President, photos by Craig Steele, Redwood Region Secretary
On Saturday, December 7th, 78 members and guests of the Redwood Region gathered for our annual Holiday Party. The event was held at The Lodge at Sonoma Renaissance, not far from the town square in Sonoma. Unlike last year, the weather was dry, but the temperature was frigid to say the least. An enterprising entrepreneur could have made a killing providing heated shuttle service from the banquet room to the back parking lot!

The event kicked off with a social hour which allowed all the guests to mingle, and also to peruse the silent auction lots provided by CASA - our designated charity. I saw several lots that interested me, but I decided to employ my "eBay strategy" and wait until the final minute to place my bids.Unlike eBay, there would be no "robo-bidders" which improves your chances of winning the auction.

All too soon everyone moved into the banquet room to start dinner. The social hour seemed to pass very quickly, and it was nearly impossible to chat with everyone. Dinner was served in an efficient manner (trying to serve nearly 80 guests at the same time is a tough feat), and I found the food to be very satisfying. During the dinner, our very dapper President, Vern Rogers, thanked all the volunteers for their efforts in decorating the room (which looked very festive!), as well as all the members who contributed to the many successful events of 2013. The representative from CASA, Millie Gilson, also expressed their appreciation for our support. Our Secretary, Craig Steele, announced the results of the 2013 election. None of the current officers were able to defect...

As dinner was concluding, the "last call" announcement was made for silent auction bids. Executing my strategy perfectly, I was able to put in the winning bid on two different lots of wine, which also came with plush Teddy bears. I'm sure my dog Leo will enjoy playing with them. At the close of the auction, we were pleased to hear that the auction raised nearly $2,000 for CASA, this in addition to the $4,000 donation made by the Redwood Region for 2013. Thank you to everyone for supporting such a worthwhile cause!

After dessert was served it was time to work off the big dinner with some dancing! Once again we had the good fortune to have Todd Morgan and the Emblems provide the music. Todd and his group performed a great set and the dance floor was filled within moments. Those who weren't dancing took the opportunity to continue to socialize with friends old and new.  A fun time was had by all! If you were unable to attend, I'd encourage you to block out Saturday, December 6, 2014, the date for next year's Holiday Party...hope to see you there!

Redwood Region Members at Thunderhill Raceway

story by Steve McCrory, photos by Steve and Barbara McCrory
Thunderhill PCA Golden Gate Region Driver's Education and Club Race - August 31, 2013

Redwood region members who attended the August 31, 2013 Golden Gate Region Driver's event included Mac Cranford, Dean Lyon, Grady Carter, and Andy Brian. Perfect weather and a well run event let drivers focus on their track time, as Dave Bunch and George Neidel kept the Grid organized and ready to roll.

Thunderhill Raceway, 6 miles west of Willows, CA is a challenging track for new students and experienced drivers alike, featuring 16 turns, with elevation changes and blind corners thrown in for extra excitement.

Andy Brian brought his recently finished 914-6 for its shakedown run and an opportunity to learn the track.

When it was time for a group photos, Mac Cranford had mysteriously disappeared -- rumor has it that he was in town washing his car.

For club members wishing to experience the performance capabilities of their Porsches, coming out for an autocross or driver's event is a great opportunity. In addition to the fun of driving your car under closed course conditions, the instruction and track time has inherent safety benefits that carry over to driving on the street. Redwood Region and other Zone 7 regions have experienced instructors and the resources to get you started.

Golden Gate Region's Driver's Education Schedule has been posted to the Redwood Calendar. Redwood's Autocross dates will be posted as soon as approved by the Airport.

Porsche Most Successful Manufacturer in ALMS History with 12 Class Championships
2005 Petersen White Lightning Porsche 911 GT3 RSR - Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long won the GT Championship.

Official testing for the new TUDOR United SportsCar Championship (TUSCC) series has already begun, and sports car fans everywhere are discussing the new classes, the new rules, the new cars, the new venues and how it will all come together on the track.

However, let's take one last look in the rear view mirror at the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), which started in March, 1999 at Sebring, and ended just weeks ago at Road Atlanta. The retrospective provides a basis for what Porsche, with its 12 ALMS Manufacturer and 14 Driver Championships, thanks to its independent Porsche customer teams, hope to accomplish going forward.

When Dr. Don Panoz decided that the American sports car fan wanted to see real Le Mans sports car racing in North America, he put up his own money to bring a one-off event to Road Atlanta in 1998. No one knew how it would turn out, but Porsche brought its Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 factory race cars, and other manufacturers followed suit. After the success of that event, Panoz, again with Porsche leading the way, announced that he would start a series in North America in 1999 called the American Le Mans Series.

Again, no one really knew who would show up for that first ALMS race at Sebring in March 1999, but once Porsche announced its support, BMW, Corvette, Audi and others followed and the ALMS was born.

In the final season of ALMS competition, Porsche customer teams CORE Autosport, Team Falken Tire and Paul Miller Racing campaigned Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs in the GT class while multiple teams, including Alex Job, TRG, Flying Lizard, JDX Racing, NGT Motorsports and Dempsey Racing have raced in the one-make GTC class.
Team Falken Tire won the last ALMS race, the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, in the last iteration of the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR

Redwood History - In 2007 David Bunch wrote about the Mendocino Tour

Mid-afternoon finds us heading out to the Mendocino Headlands for SVR's Kite Flying contest. Unfortunately with the gorgeous blue skies there is NO wind to fly kites. One person did get his kite up in the air by running with it, but when he had to stop at the edge of the cliffs; his kite crashed to the ground.
(ed. not like this year's tour -- so much wind, the kites crashed)
Ray Fiore This year more than 20 members of the SVR group joined our dinner since they heard about the "Redwine Region" dinners. Thanks to Ray Fiore for getting the dinner and wine arrangements taken care of.
(ed. Ray is still taking care of business)
Sunday morning Ray led some of group up Highway 1 to the Ft. Bragg Grange Hall for their wonderful $5 breakfast. It is like going back in a time machine to the 1950's. Some of us headed down to the Little River Inn for breakfast, then we headed back to Mendocino.  (ed. some things do change -- it's $7.00 now)
