President's Message

vern rogers headshot 2011
by Vern Rogers, Redwood Region President

Happy August to you all.  This month is filled with plenty of Porsche events to choose from, some sponsored by Redwood Region, and some not.  Redwood Autocross #7 is this weekend, and will have probably come and gone before you get a chance to read this.

If you have not attended an AX this year, or lately, you should know that we continue to have 12+ runs each time.  Autocrossing at other locations often provides way less seat time, sometimes as few as 3 runs.  Nothing will get you on the road to knowing how to really drive your car better than an Autocross.  Each new member in our Region receives a pass for one free Autocross.  If you are a member who has yet to use that pass, please come out and join us.  We have loaner helmets and provide experienced, competent, enthusiastic instructors.  New member or not, free pass or not, please do show up and have a great time with that beautiful machine of yours. Let it do what it was made for.

Continuing with August events, Friday 8/16 is Legends of the Autobahn in Carmel Valley, and the following Saturday, 8/24, is Redwood's wine tour to Field Stone.  New member Scott Buchanan and I have planned a route to the winery that is filled with beautiful scenery and great road surface.  He and I will be pre-driving it the day before the event.

Sunday, September 1st, John Bergman and his wife Wynne have once again graciously offered their amazing home and pool for a fantastic, catered party.  They hosted Redwood Region's 40th Anniversary a few years back, and in subsequent years have kept up the tradition.  This is a family event, and a great excuse to sit around the pool, swim (or not), and catch up with folks you haven't seen in a while.  (The party is not preceded by a planned drive.)   There is plenty of Porsche parking in the area adjacent to the pool.  Be sure to sign up ahead of time to allow the caterer to have an accurate count for food.

September is only missing a Redwood event on the weekend of 9/7-8. That still leaves us with four Club events in the ninth month of the year.  The second Saturday after the pool party is Ax #8 on 9/14, followed on 9/21 by the Maple Creek Winery tour, and then on 9/28 by Oktoberfest in Vacaville.  Kurt Fischer will once again provide us with excellent routes to both Maple Creek and old town Vacaville. Please see flyers below, and the upcoming events listing above for more information.

Big thanks go out to Holger and Martina Seibert for being the driving force in producing the Oktoberfest event.  This event is open to the public, but as sponsors of the event, they reserve both parking and table space for Redwood Region.  As club members we get to have a great drive and just show up to enjoy the beer, food and music.  It is Holger and Martina who get to deal with the City of Vacaville all year long planning and handling the red tape to make Oktoberfest a reality.  Also, those of you who have enjoyed the fresh, warm, chewy pretzels that have shown up at our events should know that they have been provided free of charge by Holger and Martina.  Be sure to check out their Pure Grain Bakery when attending the Oktoberfest.  It is just on the right of the square at the event location.

This may be a good time to point out that all of our Region events are only possible through the time and efforts of our members and our Board.  I certainly give thanks for the way we have all supported each other and the incredible array of activities that we produce.  I encourage all members, both new and long-time to get involved and become part of this great team.  The camaraderie and friendships developed enrich all of our lives.  We currently have need for additional assistance with the newsletter, and event planning.   Aid in either of these areas will be mentored by the Directors currently handling these duties.

Last, and definitely not least, I would like to make note of the excellent Far Niente Winery tour that occurred last month.  I believe this was the 3rd time the Club had visited the winery.  It was my first.  WOW... I want that word to sink in just a bit.  Bruce Mooers, Far Niente's General Manager, personally led the tour.  I want to publicly express my thanks for the attention to detail, the quality of wines poured, the sophisticated and eclectic cheese and meats provided, the vintage car collection, and most of all for the attitude of service to the Club.  Thank you again Bruce!

That's all for now, down the road,

Vern

Last month we announced that Redwood Region's der Riesenbaum won second place in the annual PCA newsletter competition. The beautiful glass award was presented at Parade and was received by Paul Czopek, our Zone 7 Representative. Pictured at the right is Paul presenting the award to the Redwood Board at its July 30th meeting (photo by Simone Kopitzki). The award will be delivered to Chris Harrell, the 2012 der Riesenbaum Editor, at Escape to L.A. in October. payl dr award tighter Congratulations again to Chris and all those who contributed.

The tour to Far Niente Winery and the lunch at Red Hen Cantina in Napa was enjoyed by a large number of members -- maybe our largest event ever. It was a most enjoyable day with the drive, winery visit, car collection and lunch all fabulous. It was such a big event that we had two people wanting to share their remembrances of the day. Be sure to see Mike Hinton's full report and Kurt Fischer's recollections of the day in Kurt's Korner. There is another winery tour coming up -- Field Stone Winery -- Saturday, August 24th. The planned drive, winery visit and BBQ promises to be another great event.

Be sure to read John Jackson's article on his "adventures" with his '87 911 Carrera and Barbara McCrory's report on Monterey Bay Region's Concours in Paradise. John's story is part one of an ongoing saga.

This year's Holiday Party, to be held on Saturday, December 7th, is shaping up to be the best Holiday Party ever. It will be held at The Lodge at Sonoma Renaissance Resort & Spa (1325 Broadway, Sonoma). Don Magdanz, Events Director, and a number of us are planning a fantastic evening. This is one party not to be missed. More to come as the time grows nearer.

Although we have been looking for months, no one has stepped up to assume permanent editorship of der Riesenbaum from your interim co-editors. Maybe this is because it seems like a lot to just jump into. Actually it is fairly straightforward as evidenced by Barbara and I making the transition in just one month. If this is truly the reason no one has volunteered, we are proposing that we take on an assistant editor or two. These assistants will be able to learn the "ropes" over an extended period under our tutelage -- think of it as an ausbildung (apprenticeship). If you have any interest, please speak with Barbara or myself - no obligation. The Redwood Region has grown in size and complexity, now with approximately 500 primary members and events almost every weekend. There is much to do and only a dozen or so of us to do it all -- it is "work", but it is fun and rewarding.

Hope you enjoy this issue!                                                                                                      Cheers,                                                                                                                                                    Jerry

The Porsches on the Plaza article, which appeared as Kurt's Korner, incorrectly identified two of the cars pictured. The grey car is a Roadster (not a Cab) and the red car is a T6 bodied Cabriolet (not a Speedster). Our apologies for the errors and thanks to Ron Guest for providing correct model identifications.

Far Niente Wine Tour and Red Hen Lunch Run - July 27, 2013
mike hinton headshot 2011
by Mike Hinton, Redwood Region Vice President

I can well imagine the grumblings emanating from Redwood Region members on July 27th:  "We have to be up in WINDSOR?  At 8:00 A.M.?  This had better be worth it!"  Such questions are understandable from those members who have never attended an event at Far Niente Winery, but the veterans knew better.

On an overcast morning, more typically seen in June, a large crowd gathered in preparation for the drive into the Napa Valley to visit Far Niente Winery.  I counted at least 37 Porsches, which is one of the largest gatherings I've been involved in over the past 4 years.  One of our Past Presidents, Kurt Fischer, had mapped out a 50+ mile run that would take us on Sonoma County back roads, past the famed Chalk Hill Winery, and then into the pastoral setting of Knights Valley.  The early morning traffic was light, so it was easy to keep the two groups of cars together.  After winding through the hills at the southern end of Knights Valley, the groups emerged into bright sunshine as they crossed into the Napa  Valley.

Kurt Fischer Introducing the Tour
Cars Lined Up and Ready to Go

A pleasant cruise down the scenic Silverado Trail, followed by a quick dash across the heart of the Napa Valley, led us to our destination:  the famed Far Niente Winery.  The first group of cars arrived, spreading out into the parking lot and along the curving drives leading to the winery.  Our gracious host, Bruce Mooers, asked if all of the group had arrived.  I had to inform him that the flood of Porsches only represented half of the group.  I guess the event was more popular than anticipated!

The Far Niente Winery

Arriving at Far Niente

After the second group's arrival, everyone gathered at the end of the parking lot to listen to a short history of the winery.   Bruce told us that the winery had been originally commissioned back in 1885, and was designed by the famed architect Hamden McIntyre, who also oversaw the construction of Christian Brothers Winery (now the Culinary Institute of America), and the Gustav Niebaum Winery (now Inglenook, owned by Francis Ford Coppola).  The winery operated until the time of Prohibition (1919), then fell into disrepair.  In 1979, the late Gil Nickel (a car and motorcycle enthusiast extraordinaire) purchased the property and restored it.  The first wines were made at the property in 1982.  A truly fascinating story!

Bruce Mooers Welcoming Redwood
The View from the Balcony

After our history lesson, we moved inside the top floor of the winery to taste the 2011 Chardonnay.  In keeping with the  spectacular restoration of the building's exterior, the third floor had been rebuilt with the utmost care.  For me, the most impressive feature was a spiral staircase constructed from oak.  The railings were a work of art.  A patio offered a magnificent view of the Napa Valley, and the mountains beyond.

From there, our group ventured down a level to the barrel storage area.  Typical of wine cellars, it was quite chilly!  Bruce gave us a brief overview of Far Niente's winemaking and grape growing processes, and was able to field all of the questions posed by the group.  An extra treat was the opportunity to taste the 2012 Chardonnay right out of the barrel!  Although I'm not much of a Chardonnay drinker myself,  I was greatly impressed by both offerings.  I'll have to get some to serve with Thanksgiving dinner.

Gil Nickel's Collection - Ferrari (foreground)

Our final stop of the tour was into the garage, where some of Gil's classic cars and bikes reside.  The three bikes were BMWs, and the cars were an eclectic mix, from practical (a London Cab) to the exotic (a 365 GTB4 Ferrari).  While ogling the cars and socializing, we were able to taste the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, and snack on many tasty varieties of

cheese.  Ultimately, we also had the opportunity to sample Dolce, which is a delectable dessert wine.  All too soon, however, it was time to regroup, and set out for our lunch

Lunch at Napa's Red Hen Cantina

destination, the Red Hen Cantina in Napa.  Our group filled the parking lot, and took over most of the outdoor patio.  By now, the weather was magnificent and the food and company was  great as well.  A truly successful event!

On behalf of the Club, I'd like to thank Kurt Fischer for organizing the tour, and wanted to extend our deep gratitude to Bruce Mooers and his hard-working staff for taking time to host our group.  For those who were unable to attend, my condolences.  Kurt has promised to include Far Niente, or their sister winery Nickel & Nickel, on a future tour.  Trust me, you won't want to miss it!

Kurt's Korner: Recollections of an Amazing Tour

by Kurt Fischer, Past President, Redwood Regionkurt fischer headshot

Dateline - Saturday July 27, 2013, a chilly overcast morning as we gather at Kaffe Mocha for the much-anticipated tour to one of our favorite wineries...the sumptuous Far Niente estate in the middle of the Napa Valley.

Far Niente was founded in 1885 and is one of the oldest wineries in California;Far Niente translates as "sweet Idleness". The sun finally pops through after a nice 51 mile back roads drive; our host and Redwood Region member, Bruce Mooers greets us as we slide 35 Porsches up and down the driveway.

Immediately the trays of Chardonnay are being passed to all while Bruce launches into the history of Far Niente and the surrounding area. It's a story about the who's who of Napa vineyards as well as the history of the beautiful stone building that is the center of the winery.  The grounds surrounding the winery are something to behold; they have 30 grounds keepers maintaining this stunning property!

Down we go into the fermenting area where huge refrigerated vats hold the new release of Chardonnay. The the vats are kept at 28 degrees and are covered with frost making for a chilly start as we descend into the storage caves. Encompassing about 40,000 square feet, with tunnels loaded with French Oak barrels as far as the eye can see in all directions, the caves are a sight to behold!

Here in the caves, we sample the 2012 Chardonnay, which is ready for bottling.  The acoustics in the caves are wonderful, voices and whispers are heard as Bruce talks up this new release.

Out of the caves and back into the sunshine for a stroll to the Carriage House where Gil Nickels' eclectic car collection is housed; Gil was a vintage car racer and collector of note. Here we sample the Cabernet along with cheeses selected by the Far Niente chef.  The Cabernet and En Route Pinot Noir, also a Far Niente property, are ever so good....OMG good!  Many purchases are made and we bid our goodbyes to Bruce and his staff who have treated us to a wonderful visit.

We leave Far Niente for a brief ride to the Red Hen Cantina in Napa for an al-fresco lunch, and of course still savoring our Far Niente experience.

I spoke to Bruce about a 2014 visit to the sister property of Nickel & Nickel, which is just down the street from Far Niente and that will be booked.

This was our largest event of 2013, a huge success with 76 people attending... what a day! Thanks to Bruce Mooers, President of Nickel & Nickel and his staff for a memorable day.  We will be back next year.

PCA Monterey Bay Region Concours in Paradise, Zone 7 #3
article and photos by Barbara McCrory, Redwood Region Webmaster

A beautiful day in Carmel Valley greeted a large turnout of Porsche enthusiasts for the Monterey Bay Region Concours on Sunday, July 14, 2013.  34 cars were entered to be judged and 37 cars were parked on the lawn for display.  That count does not include the cars that were in the parking lot!  Carmel Valley Park has a walking trail through it . . . the cars were parked on both sides and admired by all.

Porsches
Getting ready

As always - the Judges were the last to eat - but there was still an excellent choice awaiting them.  Thanks to our host Region, especially to Dave Aliotti, Monterey Bay Concours Chairman, who thanked the Judges as they trudged towards the food line after a hard day's work.

Dave gave a big thanks to all the volunteers from the Monterey Bay Region who helped him make the event a success including the Trophy Sponsor, Porsche of Monterey.  Special thanks also go to Les Schreiber, Zone 7 Concours Chair.

Porsches
Waiting patiently to be judged

Why be a Judge?

10.  You like to eat last.

  9.  You enjoy having a target on your back.

  8.  Finding Futz is Fun.

  7.  To win, you have to.

  6.  You like having dirty fingerprints.

  5.  It's more fun than doing housework.

  4.  You sometimes find a 20 dollar bill laying on/under the floor mat.

  3.  You enjoy hearing the reasons why that black grease is oozing out of the shifter boot.

  2.  You get to make new friends.

  1.  Or maybe enemies.

I thought showing my car would get me out of housework until I realized that Concours is just like housework only in teeny, tiny places.

Anthologies of an Engine Rebuild
JohnJackson
story and photos by John Jackson, Redwood Region Member

                                                     Discovery # 1

This is not meant to be a replacement for the latest Bruce Anderson book on 911 rebuilds. It is by no means meant to be technical from a mechanic's point of view. Instead, it is the sharing of one man's experience with his Porsche. I own a 1987 911 Carrera with a cough.

It all began with a perfect Redwood Region drive in the northern California hills. Just as we were leaving Chico, we were suddenly confronted with a loss of power. We were hearing the sound of only 5 cylinders instead of 6.  It was not the time, nor the place we would have chosen for that particular experience.  We had just filled our gas tank, because we told there were no gas stations or for that matter rest stops for another 150 miles. At best we could expect to find an outhouse to stop at, and only one of those. Suddenly Kaye and I experienced a certain "aloneness."
JJ Road Drive
A beautiful, but lonely road in northern California

Bad gas maybe?  Still some power at higher revs, so we kept going. We made our next stop, Red Bluff, not exactly a Porsche center and the outside temperature had reached 110.

At dinner all suggestions were as positive as one could imagine, maybe it's a problem with the car adjusting to the altitude. Should we continue the drive to Fortuna or turn back to Larkspur?  Thinking only the positive, and with high revs we enjoyed the great roads, and had a great time. We tried to get to sea level as soon as possible and hoped that was the answer.

Allow me to digress for a moment. When you own a 1987 911, you have heard the stories of valve guide failures too many times. It's my understanding that Porsche started to experiment with different metals for their valve guides in '87, leading to an increase in valve guide failures. Maybe they used a different supplier, or maybe it was the beer breaks at the factory (just kidding).  None the less, there have been more than a few documented engine rebuilds on the '87 911s.

John & Kaye Jackson and their 1987 911 Carrera
As I sped along my mind started to review the records in my perfectly organized file of service. I remembered that we were made aware, at our initial purchase, of oil on the #2 spark plug, and at each service in the last 30k miles. When we bought the Carrera we were in love with everything about the car, so it was easy to overlook a few things.

I wondered where that quart of oil went every 500 miles.  I thought of it as magic.  No smoke, good oil pressure, great power and no visual leaks. Suddenly all these things come to mind. It was like knowing that this was that moment others have dreaded, but you hoped it would never come for you.

After returning home we decided to play dumb. We took it to be serviced, acted as if all was well, and pretended to be surprised at the outcome.

...and what was that outcome?  But where should I go to continue this experience.  Stay tuned, there will be more to report as the story progresses.

                                             Membership Notes

I have to apologize for being late with June's report and missing out in highlighting all our 40+ year members.  John Fitzgerald, John Hefler, Richard Mattos and David Merz joined the 40+ Club.  Hard to believe you can be a member of anything that long. Thank You Guys. And special thanks to Fitz -- we have the "Green Machine" leading in the Zone 7 concours series.

Anita and I just came back from Germany.  I had to work in the charming city of Liepzig and then we vacationed our way to Munich and Stuttgart.  Yes, we went to three car museums: Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW.  We got to see where our kids (the 912e and our 914s) were born. Sort of cool!

Germany was wonderful and beautiful.  The food amazing and the beer -- 'wow', the beer!  You have to like a place where the beer is cheaper than water.  Great trip but we're back, ready to jump right into Redwood and Zone 7 activities.  Come join us.

1973 Porsche 914 2.0

1973 Porsche 914 2.0     Asking Price: $14,500
Information:  I am the third owner of the car.  The first owners were teachers from Pasadena who purchased the car new in 73 in Los Angeles.  The second owner purchased it from them in 1978 and remained in Los Angeles until relocating to Mountain View in the mid 80's.  The car was actively driven at various SCCA and PCA timed rally events. The owner sold because of her arthritis and inability to enjoy the car. It was resprayed it in the early 90's. I literally had to interview and show my PCA credentials for consideration as a buyer.  The paint is in very good condition, the entire engine was removed, with the bay completely cleaned and all issues mitigated. When I purchased it, the car was located in a shrine/garage surrounded by 35 years of rare Porsche memorabilia.  It has original mini-rally badges from Vasek Polak, PCA, and SCCA events in Southern California at Riverside. In the service book, it has service stamps by Andial -- truly historic material. The car has about 9k miles a year for about 360k miles, and every service is documented with mileage logs.  For over a decade prior to my purchase it has been serviced by Heyer Performance in Mountain View; they can be called as a reference.            EJ Achtner  eachtner@gmail.com  Skype:  EJ_Achtner
