President's Message

vern rogers headshot 2011
by Vern Rogers, Redwood Region President

I am writing this on March 5th, mere days away from our first Autocross of the year. I can't speak for the rest of you, but I am itching to get back to the fun, the speed, and the camaraderie that this event brings to the Region.  My '83 SC, appropriately sorted from all of last year's suspension upgrades, sticky tires, and weight loss program is ready to go as well. I keep taking it out on the fabulous twisty roads of West Marin and Sonoma, but it is just not the same as an AX. There is nothing like driving as fast as you possibly can without fear of cars, cops and kids. Few things, other than a DE or time trial are as much fun on four wheels. I hope to see many of you there.

And speaking of Autocross, we handled two very important items at last week's Region Board meeting:

  • A contractor was chosen for the AX track repairs in the 'go-cart' section. These have been scheduled for the time-frame between our first and second events. This section of the course will not be used next weekend. I am assured that Grady and Bob will come up with a fast, friendly and fun layout. It just won't include go-cart this time. Big thanks go out to Grady, Jim Winston and many others for getting us to this point.
  • AX fees which had been raised to $40, have been lowered back to $35. After much discussion the Board felt that this decision better served our membership. We hope this price roll-back will encourage new members, as well as those in two driver cars to show up and play with us. New members (within the past year) should have received a free pass to their first AX. If you have joined recently, and have not received your free AX pass, please contact our Membership Chair, Bob Schoenherr (b_schoenherr@yahoo.com ).
Even though we will be minus the go-cart for this this time, we will have free AX T-Shirts once again. They are the same award winning design as last season with one crucial upgrade -- the year. I guess that's a little like Porsche; stay with the basic design and implement small improvements each year.

Two weeks after the Autocross is our third annual Whale to Whale Tail Rallye. Bob Schoenherr and Anita Benzing will once again host this event. One more time we have the opportunity to experience the fun of their imaginative gimmick style rallye, and a really beautiful drive filled with Porsches, California coastline, great company, a lighthouse, and maybe even some whales. Either bring a picnic lunch, or pick one up along the way. Depending on the weather, many folks have lunch at the tables outside the lighthouse. This is an event to not be missed; Susan and I don't intend to. See below for further details.

Still in the planning stages is an event exclusively designed around welcoming new members. Discussion of several alternatives will take place at the March 26th Board meeting. Please let me know if you have ideas for venue and/or activities to make our new folks feel happy and at home in our Region.

Lastly, the Board started discussions last month about sponsoring/co-sponsoring a driving school for teens with Street Survival Schools. This is a national program that is sponsored by Tire Rack, BMW, PCA, and others. It provides teens with classroom and hands on instruction in their daily driver, improving not only their driving skill set, but helping them to avoid future accidents. For more info check out their website (http://streetsurvival.org/).

That's all for now. Down the road,

Vern

From the Interim Co-Editor(s)

Jerry headshot by Jerry Gladstone, der Riesenbaum Interim Co-Editor

Barbara and I have now completed our first three issues of der Riesenbaum as interim co-editors. We split up the work with pre-arranged responsibilities and are happy to report that this team approach is working out very well. We are pleased to bring you the March issue and hope you find it informative and interesting.

This month we bring you a technical article obtained from an outside source. We hope to get permission to reprint more articles from outside experts in the coming months. In this issue we feature an article on changing the fan belt and adjusting the pulley on air cooled 911s -- a simple, but essential task. We would welcome suggestions for technical topics you would like covered.

Last month we featured a look back into Redwood history via an interview with two-time Past President, and 40+ year member, Jim Hurson. There is no "member history" article this month as our veteran members seem to be a little shy...but we will look at some history from the March 2008 der Riesenbaum. As for member histories, we have secured leads on potential long-term members who would be good sources for look-back articles. You cannot hide, we know where you are and will be in contact in the coming months.

As we move into the spring and summer, there will be many more events than in the winter. This means more articles and an opportunity for you to contribute as a writer or photographer. Not only are we looking for reports on Redwood events, but also on all Porsche-related life like non-Redwood events, travel, car care, new (or old) car buying experience, technical knowledge, etc. Your submissions will allow der Riesenbaum to be of even broader interest and enjoyment for our members. We are always looking for new ideas for content and also for your opinions. Letters to the co-editors are welcomed and encouraged.

You have surely noticed that Barbara and I are listed as interim co-editors -- we are filling the unexpected void left when Chris Harrell's job relocated him to Southern California. Barbara and I have other duties on the Board, most notably as Webmaster and Treasurer, respectively, as well as a number of supporting roles. We are seeking someone, or a couple of members, to assume the editorship on a permanent basis. Please contact us to learn more about this enjoyable undertaking. It is not very difficult and can be learned in a month or two.

Cheers,

Jerry

Brunch Run to the Two Bird Cafe ... February 9, 2013
mike hinton headshot 2011 by Michael Hinton, Redwood Region Vice President

On February 9th, under a crystal blue sky, in sub-freezing temperatures, the Redwood Region Porsche faithful gathered for the Region's Brunch Run to the Two Bird Cafe in San Geronimo. As I had volunteered to lead the run (what WAS I thinking, it's tax season?), Brenda and I arrived early at our meeting point in Novato. Actually, we were very early in arriving so we had the entire parking lot to ourselves for some time. Eventually the participants began arriving and soon groups of people were engaged in animated conversations. There were many interesting Porsches to be seen -- a treat for all the photographers.

After we dispensed with the formalities of the drivers' meeting and announcements of upcoming Region events, Barney (my 1972 911T) led our group of about 25 cars through the suburban landscapes of Novato on Novato Blvd. Soon enough suburbia led to more open spaces where we were greeted with mostly traffic-free roads. The route was relatively familiar to me as Brenda and I had taken a trial run on the course the week before. On our reconnaissance run we tried to note the location of potential icy spots and course changes that could be easily missed. I thought we had done a pretty thorough job...

As we entered the "back road" section of the route I wasn't overly concerned with the possibility of frosty roads as it had been 35 degrees when we left our home in the Napa Valley. Imagine my surprise when we reached the first damp corner and found it a bit icy! We modified our pace accordingly and didn't have any further surprises.

After we left Novato we had a short stretch on Petaluma-Point Reyes Road before turning onto Hicks Valley Road for the roller coaster ride to Marshall-Petaluma Road. Marshall-Petaluma Road is one of my favorite North Bay roads: it's not too bumpy, even for an autocross car, and it's narrow and curvy enough to require full concentration. On top of all of that, the countryside was resplendent in its seasonal green colors, and at the top of the hill a beautiful view of Tomales Bay awaits.

After negotiating the tricky turn onto Highway 1 the group was treated to a wonderful cruise to our rest stop in Tomales. This section of Highway 1 is a fantastic driving road with smooth pavement and a variety of challenging curves. Many heads were turned upon our arrival in Tomales; in fact, a client of mine said she had seen "at least 50" Porsches when she was in town that day (it was only about 25, but an impressive group nonetheless).

After the rest stop we continued north on Highway 1. After turning onto Valley Ford Road to begin the trek back towards the restaurant in San Geronimo. All was progressing smoothly until we zipped right by our turnoff onto Tomales Boulevard. Brenda knew immediately that we had missed the turn and had me turn onto the next available road. Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with the roads around Petaluma (I only lived there for a year), so we decided to turn around and get back on the proper route. We were fortunate that there was a handy church parking lot to assist our group in reorganizing, and the traffic gods smiled on us by allowing everyone to regroup quickly.

The remainder of the route was covered without incident as we took Chileno Valley Road (lots of bicycles!) and Hicks Valley Road to eventually cruise slowly through Nicasio. From that point it was an easy drive down Nicasio Valley Road to the Two Bird Café in San Geronimo. Our group was so large that we had to be split into two dining rooms, but none of the participants seemed to mind much. The menu was limited, as is typical with large groups, but everyone seemed to find a satisfactory meal choice. The servers did a great job in taking care of our group as well.

All too soon the meal was over, and the participants drifted back to their cars to continue their day. It was a fun experience to lead a group for the first time, even with the routing miscue. It was gratifying to have members thank me for choosing the route and maintaining a sporting pace. Maybe I'll sign up again sometime! I hope to see all of you at another Region Event soon.

The Racer's Group Tech Session - February 23, 2013

This was our 6th meeting at Kevin Buckler's renowned TRG headquarters in Petaluma for technical analysis of our Porsches -- 60 of us were there!

We started the morning with the introduction of the TRG Porsche people and immediately started putting selected cars up on the TRG lifts. Ron Breeze's Boxster with upgraded suspension and exhaust passed the test. Next was new member Christina Roncaglia's C4S that she has autocrossed and now wants to start doing track days with this car. The TRG people found a slight leak in one the CV boots on the front inside (remember C4S's are 4-wheel drive). Christina will attend to this small potential problem before she does any track driving.

Last up was John Fitzgerald's pristine 1971 914...so clean you could eat off the bottom of the engine! Many people, including the TRG folks, do not see many original 914's any more so this was a real treat. This 914 has been in the Redwood Region for the past 40 years. As it turns out, the car was just sold to Bob Schoenherr and will continue its life as part of the Schoenherr Concours collection. Best of luck to both John and Bob for a car well bought and sold.

Oh, all the TRG Porsches being upgraded and assembled for the 12 Hours of Sebring were quite the sight to behold...engines, suspension pieces, interiors, etc. We spent lots of time inspecting all these bits and pieces with our minds spinning on the vast amount of money needed for professional Porsche racing.

Lunchtime with our Porsche chairs out in the lobby and the doors of Adobe Road winery opens up for tasting and buying. What a great way to end our hours at TRG -- sampling Kevin's outstanding award winning wines.

Many thanks to the entire TRG crew for hosting us. Stew, Jason, Coulter and Megan; you did well for us. If you need parts or service for your Porsche, contact Stew Foster, TRG Parts Manager.

Tech Talk: Replacing the Fan Belt on Air Cooled Porsches

Replacing the Fan Belt on Air Cooled Porsches
911 (1965-89) & 930 Turbo (1975-89)

One of the most important tasks in maintaining your 911 is the proper replacement and tensioning of the fan belt. If the belt and pulley are not properly attached, it can come loose and stop the cooling action of the fan on the motor. If you don't happen to notice the temperature gauge or the alternator lamp illuminate, then you may overheat and destroy your engine! Needless to say, the fan belt is very important.

Ironically, it's also one of the most misunderstood items on the car, and is often improperly tightened. The system works using a set of shims that regulate the thickness of the virtual pulley created by the pulley half and the fan. As you add more shims in-between the pulley half and the fan, the tension on the fan belt decreases because the pulley width is larger, and the belt rides lower in the valley. In an opposite manner, when the shims are removed from in-between the pulley half and the fan, it pinches the belt tighter. As a result, the belt will ride higher and further towards the outside of the pulley, increasing the tension on the entire belt. The system is similar to the one used on the 356, and has worked well for many, many years.

The key to installing the belt properly is to follow a set procedure that will guarantee the proper seating of the pulley and the proper tensioning of the belt. Start by installing five shims on the inside of the pulley and one on the outside. It is very important to note that the pulley must always have a total of six shims on it, inside and out at all times. If you don't place the extra shims on the outside of the pulley, the nut will bottom out, and the belt won't tighten properly. If you are missing some shims, get some and put them in right away.

Make sure that you tighten the pulley completely. To achieve this, tighten as much as you can, then turn the starter over a bit, and then retighten. This will give the belt a chance to become unpinched from the pulley. You should be able to feel the point at which all the shims are tight against the fan and the outer pulley half: you won't be able to tighten any more no matter how hard you try. The final factory torque specification for this nut is 40 Nm.

The tension of the belt should be tight enough so that the belt can be deflected with your finger about 10-15mm at the half-way point between the two pulleys. If the belt is too tight, move some shims to the inside. If it's too loose, remove some from the inside and move them to the outside. At all times keep the total number of shims inside and out at six.

The fan belt is removed by holding the pulley steady with the pulley wrench, and then loosening the 24mm nut that holds the whole assembly together.

911 Fan Belt

Figure 1: The fan belt is removed by holding the pulley steady with the pulley wrench, and then loosening the 24mm nut that holds the whole assembly together. Don't attempt to remove the pulley without the wrench: doing so can damage the pulley. Take a look in the toolkit that should have come with your car: each one came with a pulley wrench as standard equipment.

911 Fan Belt Exploded View

Figure 2: The proper order of assembly for the fan hub. Start with five shims on the inside, one on the outside, and then move additional shims to the outside as needed to obtain the proper tightness.

Escape to Albuquerque:

On the horizon is the 4th Escape, which was pioneered by the Redwood Region back in 2005 as an alternative to the PCA Parade. This year's Escape will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico; set for September 18-20, 2008 and will be put on by the Road Runner Region, who has a great reputation for holding multi-Region multi-day events.

Geneva Auto Show:

Well... fast forward to 2008 and the Geneva Auto Show and the debut of the "Cevennes Turbo CNG", a 356 clone that looks gorgeous and from the specs might be a real winner... at least in Germany where they have 700+ CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) stations!

Breakfast Run to Rancho Nicasio:

Bob Hall's run had us rolling out of the lot in two groups; Kurt heading the second, heading south down 101 to Lucas Valley Road, south on Nicasio Valley Road, heading west on Sir Francis Drake Blvd., through the dark redwood groves of Samuel P. Taylor State Park, past the little woody towns of Forest Knolls and Lagunitas, slithering around Black Mountain around Nicasio Reservoir's peaceful waters, and creeping past the Highway Patrol into nestling Nicasio. Watchful eyes on the drive caught sight of a flock of turkeys, grazing horses and cows and brilliant cinnamon chested robins. Did I mention cloudless skies?

And our own Dave Bunch had been to the 24 Hours of Daytona:

"As many of you know, I was given the opportunity go to Daytona Beach Florida for the Grand Am Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona with fellow Redwood Region member Kevin Buckler's The Racers Group. TRG had entered seven GT3 Cup Porsches in the 24 Hour race and three 997's in the Koni Challenge race."

The February 2013 membership report for period ending February 28, 2013

                                   Notes from Membership

Welcome new members and congratulations to Marvin Goss up in McKinleyville for his 31years in PCA, and Todd Harter is enjoying his 30 year anniversary. I remember meeting Todd and his wife when they lived in Fort Bragg!  Todd, I did sell you my white 1973 914 right?  Looks like Todd still has the 914 . Hope to see the car at an event someday.

Speaking of events and great people; I have a great story for you. When I first moved to Northern California (1982) I eyed this cool 914 that I wished I might have one as nice someday!  That was John Fitzgerald's 914. Since then, in my stupidity, I have bought and sold three 914s. Oh how I  wish I had held on to a couple of those cars!  I did  have one that was almost as nice as John's, but...  Lucky me, sad for John, John ran out of room for his treasured 914. Anita and I bought the car from John this past Saturday.  John had owned this car for FORTY YEARS!!!!!!!

Believe me, it was really hard for John to see the car go. Anita and I had tears in our eyes too as we drove away. It only took John a full year to finally decide he would sell the car.  John and I had been talking for at least a year, maybe longer, but we finally did it. The car will now represent the Redwood Region in Zone 7 concours this year.

Anita and I were very proud that John trusted us with his very valued "Irish Green Friend". Our hearts go out to him and Libby, it's tough to see one of your precious Porsches go! But guaranteed, the car is in good hands. John knows when he wants to take it for a spin he can come on up to the lake where that green 914 will be cruizin with John's spirit in the car forever!

1973 Porsche 914 2.0

 1973 Porsche 914 2.0     Asking Price: $14,500

Information:  I am the third owner of the car.  The first owners were teachers from Pasadena who purchased the car new in 73, in Los Angeles.  The second owner purchased it from them in 1978, and remained in Los Angeles until relocating to Mountain View in the mid 80's.  The car was actively driven and various SCCA and PCA time rally events, and the owner sold because of her arthritis and inability to enjoy the car. It was resprayed it in the early 90's; I literally had to interview and show my PCA credentials for consideration.  The paint is in very good condition, the entire engine was removed, with the bay completely cleaned and all issues mitigated.

When I purchased it, the car was located in a shrine/garage surrounded by 35 years of rare Porsche memorabilia.  It has original mini-rally badges from Vasek Polak, PCA, and SCCA events in Southern California at Riverside. In the service book, it has service stamps by Andial, truly historic material.

The car has about 9k miles a year for about 360k miles, and every service is documented with mileage logs.  For over a decade prior to my purchase, it has been serviced by Heyer Performance in Mountain View who can be called as a reference point.  EJ Achtner  Email: eachtner@gmail.com  Skype:  EJ_Achtner
