Mayor Lombardi Recognizes

Tri-Town's Volunteer Efforts

Mayor Charles Lombardi declares Tuesday, April, 1, 2014 as National Service Recognition Day in Town of North Providence.
Mayor Charles Lombardi, Tri-Town CEO, Joseph DeSantis, and some of  Tri-Town's volunteers celebrate 2014 National Service Recognition Day.
North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi presented 11 volunteers with citations and thanked them for their efforts as part of National Service Recognition Day on April, 1, 2014.  The Mayor congratulated the volunteers on their "commitment and dedication to the low income citizens of the Town (of North Providence)"   The event was part of a national day of recognition sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and was held by mayors in 1,786 cities.  In Rhode Island, nine mayors including Mayor Tavaras (Providence), Mayor Avedisan (Warwick) and Mayor Fung  (Cranston),  joined Mayor Lombardi to thank the volunteers working within their communities.

This was the second annual event of its kind sponsored by CNCS and was intended to focus attention on the efforts of two main volunteer programs operated by CNCS - the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and AmeriCorps.  Tri-Town currently has seven AmeriCorps service members who work in combination with four Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax preparers to provide low and moderate income families with free tax preparation and financial literacy counseling.

The seven AmeriCorps members include Leidy James, Chang Xiong, Kianna Nelson, Charles Haigh, Meridith May, Stephanie Garafalo, and Paula Duhamel. VITA volunteers include Elizabeth Segovis, Ann Garafaloni, Vincent Detora and Peter Detora.

Together, these volunteers have helped to prepare 469 federal and 553 state returns totaling over $780,000 in refunds.   Based on estimates from the National Community Tax Law Coalition, that means a savings to low income families of over $118,000 in private tax preparation fees!

Tri-Town Head Start Meets with the State Treasurer's Office to Promote the Empower RI Program and the  Financial Coaching Corps

Financial Coaching Corps
Tri-Town Head Start met with staff from General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo's office to discuss the Empower RI program and Financial Coaching Corps.  Empower RI is an initiative designed to highlight the importance of personal financial empowerment. The Coaching Corps is a partnership between the Treasurer's office and the Capital Good Fund that was started to help teach Rhode Islanders how to take charge of their personal  finances.

Treasury Outreach Director, Heather Hudson talked about the partnership and stressed the importance of personal savings.  Andy Posner of the Capital Good Fund encouraged Head Start staff to enroll clients in free one-on-one financial counseling and offered tips on ways to increase credit scores and avoid payday loans.

"The dedicated staff at Tri-Town Community Action Agency recognizes the importance of financial empowerment," said Raimondo. " I am proud that the Financial Coaching Corps is offering individuals the tools necessary to become financially empowered and make Rhode Island stronger."
