EITC Tax Preparation Program Entering 6th Year!

tax refund

Tri-Town is currently accepting appointments

for the 2011 tax season.  This will begin the agency's 6th year of helping low and moderate income individuals and families with free electronic filing for their federal and state income tax forms. Since 2005, Tri-Town has filed over 2,000 returns and has helped needy families collect over $1.5 million in tax refunds!

Returns are being prepared at two locations: our main office on Hartford Avenue in Johnston and our new Community Center on Maple Avenue in North Providence.  We have also added two new tax preparers to help handle the overwhelming demand, bringing the total number of volunteer preparers to seven.  There is still time to become a volunteer preparer for this season (see below for detail).

This season, Tri-Town will be adding two new features for the convenience of our clients: banking services and financial counseling.  During the exit interview, all clients will be able to set up checking, savings, or college-bound accounts as well as have the opportunity to enroll in Tri-Town's Financial Stability Program funded through the United Way of Rhode Island.

The Financial Stability program provides individual and classroom based training designed to help clients create practical, monthly budgets that really work, leading to increased savings, long-term asset development, and building for retirement.  The program uses a variety of teaching methods including Money Smarts: a computer-based program developed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and used by over 3.5 million people since its develoment in 2006.

Now Enrolling for 2011 Summer Youth Program!
Tri-Town is now accepting applications for the 2011 SummerYouth Program.  Although the program will not officially begin until June 2011, the agency is beginning the application process now, as we are expecting a large number of applicants this year due to changes in eligibility.  Youth will no longer have to meet income requirements nor will they need to possess any employment barriers.  In addition, the age this year has been expanded to include all youth from 14 to 24!

Summer Youth

As in past years, the program will consist of 6 weeks of hands-on, work experience with a local employer.  Youth will have a wide variety of employers from which to choose and will be strongly encouraged to select one that meets their future career plans.  All youth will receive $6.40 per hour for up to 25 hours per week for the entire 6 weeks.   In addition to work experience, youth will participate in field trips to local colleges and employers in high-demand, growing industries throughout the state.  Financial Literacy, Work Readiness and OSHA Safety Certification will also be among the numerous activities plan.

Tri-Town is holding orientations next week on February 7th, 9th and 10th to provide youth and their parents with additional information and application instructions.  Orientations will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the new Tri-Town Community Center located on 33 Maple Avenue in North Providence (formerly the North Providence Boys & Girls Club).

Registration is not required to attend an orientation, but all youth under the age of 18 must bring a parent or guardian.
