Women Leaders: Why diversity, inclusion, and development are material to your business

Gender diversity is a critical factor in improving business leadership and decision-making, but it is also essential for the overall financial, environmental, and governance performance, and long term sustainability of a company. Studies suggest that the presence of women at the top positively affect all areas of business practice and success, and that companies that place explicit emphasis on gender diversity tend to perform better in general.

Join us in a discussion with two member companies about how to:
  • Keep qualified talented women at your firm
  • Develop women as leaders
  • Reap the social and business value of women leadership

Korean business positioned to practice corporate citizenship the "right" way

Katherine V. Smith, Executive Director, Boston College Center

Katherine

At the end of 2012, I was honored to be invited to speak to a group of 500 executives in Seoul at the Korean Institute for Social Responsibility (KOSRI) meeting and film festival (original news item on Korea's Etoday - English translation). Business has been an impressive engine of change in Korea - moving the country over the past 60 years from war-torn poverty to levels of prosperity that are on par with developed economies. It seems like progress can be endless in Korea and that anything can be achieved with hard work.
Seoul is a beautiful mix of ancient culture and futuristic modern architecture. My hosts were extremely welcoming and eager to understand and apply concepts of global corporate citizenship that have been developed in American and European corporations. Read more.

By Colleen Olphert, Director, Center Membership

International Women's Day is still a month away on March 8 but

the people at Triple Pundit have already gotten into the spirit by compiling a list of 35 women CSR leaders. Triple Pundit's Jen Boynton describes the list as "those women cranking out the CSR strategy and CSR reports who you don't get to hear from very often," along with some thought leaders you may have heard from.
We at the Center are proud to report that 11 representatives of our member companies are among these inspirational women. They are:

Ephi Banaynal dela Cruz, Director, Social and Environmental Accountability (SEA) and Audit, Microsoft Corporation
Mary Capozzi, Senior Director, Sustainability/Corporate Responsibility, Best Buy
Molly Cartmill, Director, Corporate Social Responsibility, Sempra Energy
Ginny Cassidy, Corporate Citizenship Consultant, Medtronic
Tamara "TJ" Dicaprio, Sr. Director, Carbon and Energy, Microsoft Corporation

Marilee McInnis, Senior Manager, Southwest Airlines
Beatriz Perez, Chief Sustainability Officer, The Coca-Cola Company
Stephanie Rico, VP, Environmental Affairs, Wells Fargo
Laura Rubbo, Director, Corporate Citizenship, The Walt Disney Company

Women like these and others demonstrate the importance and value of gender diversity among business leadership. In our next webinar on March 6, we'll discuss how to retain and develop women as leaders. Like all of our webinars, it is free to members.

With an expanded number and variety of communication channels, you face increasing challenges and opportunities in sharing your community involvement efforts internally and externally. This makes a sound communication strategy essential to successful execution of your community involvement strategy. Crafting and communicating compelling messages via multiple media can boost employee participation rates and build trust in the community.

News on the Practice

ESG reporting doubles among S&P and Fortune 500

A recently released report by Governance & Accountability Institute, "2012 Corporate/ESG/Sustainability/Responsibility Reporting - Does It Matter?", provides new statistics on ESG reporting and use of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Framework. The G&A Institute is the exclusive data partner for the GRI in the United States, the U.K. and Ireland. Among the findings:
  • An increasing number of corporate managers and boards are recognizing the many benefits that measuring, managing, and disclosing their strategies and performance on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors can have for their companies.
  • In the G&A 2012 analysis, 53 percent of S&P 500 companies reported, compared to 19 percent in 2011. Among Fortune 500 companies, the analysis found 57 percent of companies reported compared to 20 percent in 2011. The majority of companies that report in the S&P 500 and the Fortune 500 use the GRI Framework.
  • Companies that report on their sustainability strategies, initiatives, programs and ESG performance appear to be more likely to be selected for key sustainability reputational lists, ranked higher by sustainability reputation raters and rankers, and, selected for inclusion on leading sustainability investment indexes.
The Center for Corporate Citizenship is now a certified training organization for the Global Reporting Initiative. Our two-day course, Sustainability Reporting: A GRI certified program, has sold out its first offering this month in Atlanta. A second offering of the course is being scheduled for May in New York. Please consult the program calendar on our website for the dates and location as they are finalized.
