HIMSS14

ACU's Anna Gard, RN, FNP-BC, will lead a roundtable discussion on "Privacy and Security Vulnerabilities and Opportunities in High Risk Populations" on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 1pm during HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida. This roundtable will explore HIPAA security and privacy vulnerabilities in small-medium sized practices, including safety-net medical and behavioral health practices FQHCs and Medicaid MCOs, serving disproportional vulnerable patient populations. We encourage you to attend this roundtable discussion and to invite your colleagues and other health care professionals to contribute to the conversation.

Group Visits for Asthma Management

Group visits, or shared medical appointments, are a growing trend in chronic disease management. In a  5-minute podcast hosted by the Asthma Community Network, ACU Associate Director for Programs Lois Wessel, FNP, shares her thoughts on how group visits can be used to improve asthma self-management.

New Online Clinic Library

The California Primary Care Association (CPCA) and the Western Clinicians Network (WCN) have partnered to bring you the online Clinic Library, which was created by and for community health center clinicians with startup funding from Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit. The Clinic Library is a shared clinical knowledge portal run by clinicians and provides users with a comprehensive range of research and operations resources including point of care clinical decision support tools. The portal contains extensive links to other references and resources chosen by the advisory members as the tools most valuable to a clinician practicing in a community health setting. The Clinic Library is available to all community clinic and health center clinicians through a subscription for the low cost $195 per clinician. Click Here to find out more today!

Gestational Diabetes

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has released a final Recommendation Statement on screening for gestational diabetes mellitus. The USPSTF recommends screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in asymptomatic pregnant women after 24 weeks of gestation. Meaningful Use of Health IT

CMS is extending the deadline for eligible health professionals to attest (retroactively) to meaningful use under the Medicare electronic health record incentive program for 2013 from February 28 to March 31. Those who meet the criteria for meaningful use qualify for incentive payments. Learn more here.

SAFER Guides for Use of EHRs

A new set of guides and interactive tools designed to help health care providers use electronic health records (EHRs) more safely has been released by HHS' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). The SAFER Guides are a suite of tools that include checklists and recommended practices to help health care providers assess and optimize the safety and safe use of EHRs.

The give Kids a Smile Toolbox is a resource for dentists and other team members interesting in implementing the program in their community. The guide includes a step-by-step timetable on how to plan an educational, screening, or treatment event; how to promote the event to the media; and what legal issues may arise.

New Student Board Member

Justin D'Addario was elected to the ACU Board of Directors in January and officially begins serving this month. Currently a medical student at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, D'Addario is on track to graduate in 2017. Welcome, Justin!

February Journal Issue Now Available

The February 2014 issue of the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved is now available in print and online. This silver anniversary issue opens with a fascinating refl  ection on health care delivery in the U.S. over the last 25 years, including the impact of the Affordable Care Act, by David Satcher, MD, PhD.
