Clinicians CAN Affect Gun Violence

Click the image to hear and interview with Ricky Choi, MD, a pediatrician, blogger and advocate, on how clinicians can change the culture of gun violence.

With a growing national debate on gun violence, you may wonder what you as a clinician can do. Last month we featured a column on Clinicians and Gun Violence: What to Know and What to Do by Dr. Annie Sevarese with recommended tools for screening and counseling at-risk patients.

In this interview, Dr. Ricky Choi says that hearing and being a part of his patients' powerful stores has motivated him to speak out about gun violence. "Clinicians under-recognize the amount of influence and power that they have," said Choi, "whether it be on the individual patient level or engaging city councilmen, local legislators, state and even at the national level, we have the stories, the medical training, the data and knowledge that give us an incredible amount of credibility."

Listen to the full interview here. This is the latest entry in the ACU Members Audio Story Bank. If you have a story to tell, email us at [email protected].

Asthma Training On Demand

ACU and the Clinical Directors Network (CDN) will present a live webcast on Building a Comprehensive Asthma Care Home: Engaging Clinicians, Patients and Caregivers in Comprehensive Asthma Management on April 25, 2 - 3 p.m. ET. Registration is free and the webinar has been approved for 1.0 prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. ACU trainers Lois Wessel, FNP-BC and Anna Gard, FMP-BC, have trained more than 1,675 clinicians in the three years they have been offering the course. "We are constantly updating the material and tailoring it to new audiences," Ms. Wessel said. "Living with asthma requires constant vigilance; when patients, their families and clinicians work together, there is a lot we can do to improve their quality of life and decrease their medical costs."

Thanks to our partnership with CDN, following the webcast, the ACU course will be available on demand for clinicians to watch for continuing education credit.
