ONC Panel to Keynote HIT Conference

A trio of speakers from the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology will serve as keynote speakers at the ACU Health IT and the Underserved Conference March 7 - 8, 2013 in Poughkeepsie, NY, about 80 miles north of New York City. Other confirmed keynote speakers are Michael Painter, Sr. Program Officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Neil Calman, President of the Institute of Family Health, and Ceci Connolly, Managing Director of the Health Research Institute, PwC.  

 

The conference will offer more than 20 workshop sessions covering topics ranging from electronic health records to mobile technologies to professional training and development in health IT. Use these quick links to access the conference schedule and registration.

Nursing Informatics Symposium 

  

Are you a nurse and using informatics to improve patient-centered care and outcomes? If so, consider attending the HIMSS13 Nursing Informatics Symposium in New Orleans March 2-3, 2013. You will hear from nurse leaders who are achieving quality outcomes using technology and informatics. Nurses engaged in the advancement, implementation and evaluation of technology-enabled quality care will share practical strategies. ACU Members: ACU is offering one complimentary registration to this meeting. We Can! Tackle Obesity    

 

Meet Jessica Wallace, a PA at the Upper Cardozo Clinic in Washington, DC, who runs an innovative obesity program for families called We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition). We Can! employs a group visit model and culturally appropriate curriculum. It allows Jessica to get to know families over an extended period. Program results include adults and kids drinking fewer sodas, eating more fruits and vegetables, watching less television, exercising more and losing weight. NNOHA Seeks FQHCs for Oral Health Project

 

The National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA) is seeking applications from Federally-Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) to participate in the Oral Health Core Clinical Competency Pilot Project, funded through NNOHA's cooperative agreement with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The goal of the Project is to adopt and implement oral health core clinical competencies using a sustainable systems-approach resulting in integration of oral health and primary care through inter-professional collaborative practice. 

 

The pilot project will be implemented at three awarded health centers between February 2013 and May 2014. Each center will propose, implement and track data for an innovative inter-professional oral health project of their design that fulfills the specific oral health core clinical competencies designated by this project. Each center may apply for funding of up to $20,000 for the project. More information is available online. Application deadline is January 18, 2013

 

2013 Health Promotion Calendar Available

The calendar theme is Be a Partner in Your Health. Its simple messages in English and Spanish, remind patients that patient-centered health care involves a partnership in which they play an active role. The calendar messages are:

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council is offering two webinars in January. Both are free, registration required.

  •  Jan. 29, 1 p.m. ET, Tailoring Outreach for the HCH Field will review the National Outreach Guidelines for Special Populations, which were developed in concert with agencies working with a wide spectrum of populations, discuss outreach as a program requirement for HCH providers and offer best practices in outreach. 
  • Jan. 31, 1 p.m. ET, A Structural Framework for Meaningful Use of EHR in the HCH Setting will highlight the key foundational elements identified by health care for the homeless grantees for successful implementation of meaningful use of electronic health records. HRSA will provide an update of the tools and resources available to support HCH grantees in health information technology and quality

National Ctr. for Interprofessional Practice 

 

Stay abreast of news and developments from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education at the University of Minnesota or sign up to receive news and announcements through their new website. The Center is a public-private partnership focused on identifying ways to improve health, enhance patient care and control costs through integrating interprofessional practice and education. The work of the Center addresses five core domains: leadership; collaborative practice and health system transformation; education and training; research, evaluation and scholarship; and innovative and novel models. Center Director Barbara Brandt, Ph.D. is an ACU member.
