When my last newsletter went out, I was outside email contact, hiking in the desert. When I wondered out loud what to write in this newsletter, Sara suggested that I talk about that trip. At first, I thought she must be kidding: why would anyone want to hear about my travels with my soon-to-be-16 nephew?

Then Sara reminded me that there is something quite unique that he and I share. Indeed, in all his years, we've never once, either of us, done anything that resulted in pain or hurt for the other. That's really extraordinary, I came to realize. So I decided to write something about the magic of what happens when two people are truly living together from a mutual care for each other's needs and mutual trust in intentions.

Unfortunately, it's not the most common experience that I hear about, so writing about relationships that are easy, as I did in my recent blog post, is quite different from what I usually write about, which is more about how we can overcome challenges in relationships, in organizations, or in the world.

Here's one small story that can illustrate the joy we experience together. In an earlier trip, as we discussed a moment in which he stretched a little too much and didn't speak up sufficiently, we created a simple system to assess willingness. "Green" is when there is ample willingness that flows easily; "yellow" is when there is some amount of stretching, not a high cost; and "red" is when the willingness still exists, and it's at a high cost.

At some point I wanted to visit a certain area in a park which I knew he wasn't particularly interested in. So I checked with him to see what his level of willingness was. When I learned it was "yellow," that was enough for me to know, with total clarity, that it wasn't worth it for me to pursue that side trip: I didn't want it enough to incur cost to him. There was no resentment or disgruntlement, because I knew that if I wanted it enough he would be willing; I just didn't want it enough to ask for such a stretch. In my blog, you can read about some of the other elements that make relationships work as smoothly as ours does.

Celebrations! Click here to read about other things I've been up to in the last while.

And below you can read about upcoming programs and interests, and learn how you can continue to support the spread of the vision, principles, and practices that inform all we do here at The Fearless Heart. It's not an easy ride, as the ambition is quite large, and the resources quite finite.

Still, in this moment of writing, I know that my choice remains clear to devote my life energy to the continued possibility of transformation.

In hope and peace,
