Dear WGC Donors and Friends,
As we embark on the twelfth year for the Women's Giving Circle in Howard County I would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights of this past year.
It is gratifying to see how the WGC has been so widely embraced and integrated into the fabric of Howard County. The Young Women's Giving Circle, now in its third year, is making quite a name for itself and was even given a "shout-out" by County Executive Ken Ulman during his State of the County address last month. In 2012 the WGC Circle Team was 50 women strong and raised funds and attracted donors to the WGC via its Iron Girl effort. Last year was the eighth year for our signature program, Journey, where the WGC grants scholarships for 25 girls in partnership with Maryland Leadership Workshops. And 2012 also was the year that the WGC was honored by The Mall in Columbia as part of their new community outreach program titled City Gives. The Women's Giving Circle has a large group of donors - nearly 1000 - but only a small group of volunteers that keep all the activities and efforts moving forward.
And so as we close the door on year 11 and enter year 12, I find myself once again, so grateful to be associated with such an amazing group of women in such a giving and supportive community.
Caroline Sherman, Chair

Once again this year, the WGC is excited to promote Maryland Leadership Workshops' Journey camp. Applications are now available for summer 2013. Journey is a weeklong residential leadership development program for Howard County girls entering 8th and 9th grade in the fall of 2013. Maryland Leadership Workshops will run Journey from Sunday, July 14 - Saturday, July 20 at Washington College in Chestertown, MD. The cost of the camp is $700. Financial assistance is available. Requests for financial aid should be mailed by March 22, 2013. The application deadline is March 28, 2013.

Since its inception in 2006, more than 200 Howard County girls have completed the program. The 2013 program will serve 25 girls, and every effort will be made to include girls from all four corners of the county. During last year's intensive camp experience, participants participated in a confidence course, as well as workshops on self-awareness, building successful relationships, and decision-making. Individualized goal setting with one-on-one advising is also a component of the program. Survey results at the end of the program indicated that the girls gained self-confidence and interpersonal skills as a result of their participation.
WGC provides grants to Maryland Leadership Workshops to provide support for Journey. MLW has been providing leadership training programs for middle and high school students in the state of Maryland for over 55 years.
