Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Babysitters,

 

My name is Minati OConnell, I am mom of a 8 year old daughter who in joining Lafayette Ave School in September 2014.  

 

We, ChathamSTEM and I, are putting together a ChathamSTEM Lego Robotics First Lego League Competition demo/information session on Wednesday, July 16th from 4:30-6:00 at the Chatham Library.  If you cannot attend this session, we will hold another session during the first week of August. 

My daughter Asha OConnell along with her friends- Megan Andeasen, Miranda Salinger, and Elena Wang were in a project this past Spring.  For our first time effort, we opted to present a project for the Fishawack Festival.  See our story in the Chatham Patch article. 
 
Lego Robotics is starting to gain some footing here in Chatham and now ChathamSTEM is looking to build more teams and these teams to go into an actual competition.    

  

Attached are few slides about the FLL program.  Also, here is another article about a local group going to the state level competitions.

  

FLL challenge will be unveiled on August 26th and teams have to be organized by September 15th. Below are some additonal points.  

  • Meeting schedules are flexible based on your team.  You can meet once a week or more.  Its up to you. 
  • Recommendation for teams could be 5 per team for the age group (4th-5th grade).  The league suggests up to 10 but I think thats a bit much, but if you as a parent are up for the challenge, its fine.
  • ChathamSTEM is working to leverage the Lafayette School space  for space for teams to meet.  We will have opportunities to meet either after school (3:30-5:30) and/or in the evenings (6pm-8pm) and Weekends. You can also meet at each other's homes if you prefer.
  • While we ask that one of the parents to be the coach for the team, there will likely be a teacher inlace for the 3:30-5:50 sessions and a high schooler for the evening/week-end sessions
