Come join ChathamSTEM for three exciting events

As part of the continuing effort to encourage the development of science, technology, engineering and math among our children, ChthamSTEM is proud to present the latest in a series of monthly talks and visits designed to engage and enliven our young students minds.

STEMTalk: Chris Volinsky, AT&T.
Baseball, Netflix and Statistics
Friday, June 6th, Chatham Public Library

We are excited to welcome keynote speaker Chris Volinsky, Executive Director of the Statistics Research Department at AT&T Labs - Research. While working at the famous 'Bell Labs', Chris led the team that won the $1,000,000 Netflix Prize for improving their recommendation engine.

Chris will deliver excerpts from the program he created for SxSW 2012 titled "Shaping Citiesof the Future using Mobile Data".  The data from millions of active mobile devices gives us an unprecedented view into human mobility. The study of this anonymized, aggregate data allow insights that can greatly benefit our understanding of society while preserving individual privacy rights.  Chris will discuss some projects at AT&T that use anonymous data from mobile devices to inform urban planning and sustainability measures through datavisualization and statistical analysis of traffic trajectories and user clustering.  Specifically, AT&T has worked with the urban planning team of Morristown to find out how this type of data can benefit our local community.

Also learn about the fun and excitement of academic research and opportunities for internships and summer programs.

STEMTalk: Linda Sohl, Columbia University / NASA,
The truth about Global Climate Models
Wednesday June 18th, 4:00pm, Chatham High School

Join Dr. Solhl to explore the world of Global Climate Modeling and discuss short and long term forecasting and modeling.

If Winston Churchill had been a geologist, he might well have described the Precambrian Earth as a puzzle, wrapped in an enigma, surrounded by a mystery. Earth history prior to 542 Ma (million years ago) tends to be a bit murky, with scattered glimpses into worlds (yes, that's plural) vastly different from our own. Dr. Sohl's research interests lie in trying to understand the global climatic conditions that may have had an impact on and/or evolved in conjunction with, life on this planet. That effort requires a combination of geological data analysis and Global Climate Model (GCM) output, both so that the climate simulations are as realistic as we can make them, and so that the model output is better capable of casting light on information that rarely or never gets preserved in the rock record.

Join STEMTalk/STEMTrip volunteers so that our students continue to experience fascinating opportunities.

Dear 2013/2014 STEMTrip and STEMTalk participants:

As we approach the last events of the 2013/2014 season (see above) we would like to thank all the parents who helped to make arrangements for our students to visit their companies (or companies of people they know), those who chaperoned and also those who organized registration and follow-up. As an all-volunteer organization, whatever ChathamSTEM does means there is some, often very busy, parent-volunteer without whom it could not happen.

Last year's program was tailored to support the areas of growth within our schools. We identified four areas of growth and tailored the trips to cover them: Computer Science, Robotics, Physics and Science Research. STEMTrips were organized to the following:

- The Princeton Physics Plasma Labs                   - Google (twice)
- The AT&T Network Operating Center                  - The New Jersey Bio Research Lab
- The Sommerset Physics Startup incubaote          - Tumblr

We are beginning to plan for 2014/2015 trips and a recent review of the school scorecard suggsets that we should explore other areas: Chemistry and Statistics. We will also repeat some of the destinations that were oversubscribed first time around.

For this to happen we'll need a few parents to step in to help coordinate the signup, a fairly straightforward process. There are many benefits to volunteering to coordinate the STEMTrips and STEMTalks: You're the first one to know about them, you get to interact with some pretty amazing people and you get to learn more about leading-edge high tech companies. You can also, if you wish, get to learn how to use Constant Contact and Eventbrite.
