"Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdo
m." -Luke 12:32

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In reading the news of the day we can sometimes think that there is much to fear in our world. There are even those who seek to exploit what is fearful in an effort to create division and strife among us. But we worship a God who tells us over and over and over again to not be afraid. I've been thinking about this a lot lately... really, it's hard not to think of this!

As I've contemplated the temptation towards fear I've realized that we have a great opportunity to share the love of God with those around us.

How? By living the grace that we received.

How, again? By treating others with the kindness that we have experienced through Jesus.

You see, one of the unfortunate attitudes that accompany fear, is suspicion (or even hatred) of people we do not know. This suspicion then becomes circular as those who do not know us are also suspicious. So, a simple sounding remedy is to move beyond our comfort zones and build relationships with others. Some simple first steps here are: to be kind, to refrain from passing on unkind words; to learn to recognize God's presence in the world and among the stranger; to be patient; and to above all pray for those we encounter.

This is obviously not a complete list. Maybe you have some suggestions to add and I would be welcome to receive them and share them with our congregation.

Along these lines, in response to some of the violence that we have experienced lately we have been exhibiting cross displays on our lawn. The first display was a little over a year ago, after Charleston. Then, in response to the murders in Orlando, some of us gathered to paint 50 crosses in colors of the rainbow and placed them on our lawn. The response to this display has been amazing and it leads me to believe that we have a great opportunity to share the love of God with our neighbors.

Just this past Sunday I was walking home from worship and a man stopped me on the street and said, "I owe you a thank you." As I had not previously met this man I wondered, "what for?" But before I could ask he said, "that display of crosses was beautiful." He then went on to share more about how the memorial display touched his heart, as well as to share with me some of his own struggles that he is dealing with. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet a neighbor who happened to be Jewish. I was able to experience another aspect of God's kingdom that day.

My hope and prayer is that we, and all of God's children, can find ways to build relationships with our neighbors so that instead of the possibility of fear we experience the reality of God's kingdom on earth.

May the peace of Christ be with you all.

We need your help.  Each week, we ask that you bring one item from the list below and place it in  the bucket at the Altar rail.  If you prefer to purchase all items together, you may bring them to church the Sunday of your choice, prior to September 4th.  We hope to assemble at least 60 school bags. Rummage Sale 2016

A church rummage sale is more than selling donated items. It's about letting go of items from our past and present because of downsizing, moving or just because we don't see the need to hold on to them any longer. It's also about working together and enjoying each other as we prepare to open our doors to our neighborhood.

Every successful event is possible because of volunteers willing to give their time.  There is much to do so I invite you to consider volunteering Friday, August 12 at 6:00 p.m. to set up tables and help organize items.  Another opportunity to volunteer is Saturday morning starting at 5:00 a.m. to put the items on the tables and to help keep things organized throughout the sale.  Of course we have the clean-up at the end of the sale. You can come for the entire day or if you can only stay for a couple of hours that is fine.

Your donation items can be dropped off at the Preschool starting August 9-12 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All items will be priced at $1.00.  If you feel your item(s) are worth more than a $1.00,
please put the price on it with a piece of masking tape or sticker.  We are asking all clothing to be put on hangers. Please see the RUMMAGE SALE FLYER below.

Please stop by on August 13 and check out our sale items. We anticipate a day filled with fun, fellowship, food and lots of sales.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 805-205-4313 or by e-mail at rtblue@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,
Robin Tribbitt

"God's work. Our hands."
Sunday Sept. 11, 2016

"God's work. Our hands."  Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) - one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

The date for the 2016 dedicated day of service is Sunday, Sept. 11. Not possible to participate on this date? Please consider another day. This year's date also marks the 15-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

As you continue to share God's love with your neighbors, whether it's volunteering at a shelter or cleaning a park, consider thanking and praying for the emergency responders in your area.

"The world can be a dangerous place. But there are some who, when disaster strikes, run toward the danger. These are the first responders, firefighters, police and EMTs, who live out their baptismal vocation in service to their communities in times of intense need. They do God's work with their hands." - ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton

Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ - every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life - flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God's grace.

You work every day to make your community a better place. Let's do this work together! Visit ELCA.org/dayofservice and get started on your planning today.
