GIRL FROM GOD'S COUNTRY:
A HISTORY OF WOMEN IN FILM
"GIRL FROM GOD'S COUNTRY dovetails into a bigger
examination of women in film, past, present and future;
and audiences will leave with a call to action
to support more women filmmakers."
BOISE WEEKLY
Gender parity for women filmmakers is a hot button topic this year. GIRL FROM GOD'S COUNTRY: A History of Women in Film, WMM's newest release, explores the historical roots of the problem with the untold story of Nell Shipman, a silent screen film pioneer, and brings the issues up to date with recent interviews with leading women experts on the status of women filmmakers. Shipman's pioneering journey from Hollywood starlet, to action adventure heroine, to independent film director, helped to pave the way for independent storytellers today, and her legendary scripts shattered predictable cinematic tropes about women. Archival footage shot by early trailblazers including Zora Neale Hurston and director/actress Miriam Wong are featured, as well as present day interviews with Geena Davis and scholar Kay Armatage. Highlights also include coverage of the lost generation of female directors and producers in silent film, and the roots of inequality that still plagues the film industry today.
GIRL FROM GOD'S COUNTRY is a vital resource for silent film scholars, those studying the history of Hollywood, as well as overall discussions addressing gender parity in Women's and Cinema studies.
