The Movie About Anna (Alex Sichel, Elizabeth Giamatti), Speed Sisters (Amber Fares), Where the Marsh Meets the Lake (Sharon Shattuck), Strong Island (Yance Ford), Very Semi-Serious (Leah Wolchok) and In My Father's House (Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg) have all received Sundance Documentary Grants. 

 

We're happy to announce that 13 projects from the production assistance program recently received grants from Chicken & Egg, including Among the Believers (Hemal Trivedi), Yula's Dream (Hanna Polak), The Bill (Ramona Diaz) and The Blind Cinema Club (Jennifer Redfearn).  

 

Carol Bash (Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings the Band) and Holly Morris (The Babushkas of Chernobyl) have each received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

 

Stephanie Wang-Breal's film Tough Love has just been awarded two grants for our outreach and engagement strategy: One from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and another from the Fledgling Fund! 

 

Congratulations to Nicole Horanyi (Afghan Justice) and May Abdalla (Cold Rush) who were each awarded Gucci Tribeca Grants!  Afghan Justice also received a grant from Cinereach.

 

Congratulations to Kirsten Johnson, whose film A Blind Eye, was recently awarded a grant from Catapult Film Fund.

 

Kate Davis recently received a grant from The Fledgling Fund for her project The Newburgh Sting. Congratulations!

 

Congratulations to Marlene McCurtis, whose film Wednesdays in Mississippi has received a grant from the Samuel Rubin Foundation.  

 

Signe Baumane's film Rocks In My Pockets received two awards at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and will open theatrically in NY at the IFC Center on September 5th and in Los Angeles at the Laemlee on Sept 12th.

 

Small Small Thing - The Olivia Zinnah Story (Jessica Vale) is now available for streaming and download on iTunes and Amazon and available on DVD.

 

Elisa Paloschi has launched a crowdfunding campaign for her film Driving with Selvi through Indiegogo

 

Theresa Loong's film Every Day is a Holiday will screen at the Hoboken Historical Society on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at 4pm.  

 

Shawn Batey's film Changing Face of Harlem will screen in The New Filmmakers Series at Anthology Archives on Sept. 17th.

 

After a successful theatrical run, Mark Levinson's film Particle Fever is now available on most digital platforms including iTunes, cable VOD, AmazonPrime and Netflix.

 
FUNDING APPLICATION DEADLINES

 

NEH America's Media Makers: Development & Production Grants
Deadline: August 13, 2014 for Projects Beginning April 2015
Supports interactive digital media, film and television projects and interactive digital media may be websites, games, mobile applications, virtual environments, streaming video, or podcasts. 

 

The Nancy Malone Marketing and Promotions (MAP) Grant is now accepting applications. The grant will award $5,000 to help a first or second time woman director publicize a recently completed narrative film that does not yet have a distributor in place. The deadline is August 15th and you can apply here.

 

Samuel Rubin Foundation
Deadline: September 5, 2014
For projects dedicated to the pursuit of peace and justice and the search for an equitable reallocation of the world's resources which can be achieved only through the fullest implementation of social, economic, political, civil and cultural rights for all the world's people. Grants ($5k-$10k) are not awarded to individuals, but to specific projects within an organization.

 

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) Manhattan Community Arts Fund

Deadline: September 16, 2014

The Manhattan Community Arts Fund (MCAF) is a local arts funding program that provides seed grants to individual artists, collectives and small arts organizations for projects and activities that enable Manhattan communities to experience and engage with the performing, literary, media, and visual arts. The MacArthur Foundation

Supports work in such fields as the environment and conservation, population and reproductive rights, civil rights, civic engagement and the arts among others and is committed to supporting new ideas.


nextPix/firstPix Grant

Submissions open

firstPix Grant will accept queries from any film that is being crowd funded at any point during the year. The DV/film should have a positive humanitarian message.

Starz Denver Film Festival Deadline: August 10, 2014 Since 1978, the DFS has worked to promote the medium as both an art form and a civic forum, developing a program that includes year-round screenings, community outreach projects and renowned special events. Apply here.

Women Make Movies Wins NAMAC Award! 
 
 
NAMAC Announces Women Make Moves as the recipient of the 2014 NAMAC Organization Award! The award honors WMM's contributions to further the work of the independent media arts sector through its internationally recognized Distribution Service and Production Assistance Program. WMM is incredibly honored to receive this recognition from NAMAC, and our support for each other goes back decades. The award will be presented in person at the NAMAC Conference (August 6-8) in Philadelphia. Our Acquisitions Director Kristen Fitzpatrick will attend the conference.

We are deeply saddened by the recent death of gifted writer and director Alex Sichel (The Movie About Anna). Her passing is a huge loss to the film community, and she will be dearly missed. There will be a memorial service on September 20th at 3:00pm at The Lafayette Presbyterian Church 85 South Oxford Street in Brooklyn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution to "The Movie About Anna" or the Kadampa Meditation Center in New York City. To read the full obituary, please click here.

I Married My Father's Killer

WMM welcomes the new June 2014 class of the Production Assistance Program! This new group of films covers topics from all over the world, from the historical "Diego and Frida in Detroit" to urgent contemporary issues like "The Pregnancy Exclusion" and "The Lucky Ones Survive." Emily Kassie is making her feature documentary directing debut with "I Married My Father's Killer" and Sonia Fritz has directed over 25 documentaries, her latest "Las Mariachis" is about an all-female Mariachi band. WE ARE SEEKING FALL INTERNS!

 

Internships are available for Fall 2014 term in:

  • Marketing/Publicity
  • Production Assistance/Fiscal Sponsorship
  • Distribution
  • Administration

The ideal candidates will be studying film/cinema studies and/or women/gender studies and have an interest in human rights and social justice issues. We are looking for interns to start in mid-late August and continue until winter break.

 

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills; strong organizational skills; the ability to multi-task, work independently and work well under pressure; and will take initiative. Familiarity with Internet research, Microsoft Office Suite, and PC platforms is necessary. Knowledge of and interest in feminist media a plus.

ConfRoom Women Make Movies Conference Room 
Available to Rent!


 

Our beautiful, fully equipped conference/screening room is centrally located on 29th Street and 6th Avenue in NYC. The room is available hourly, 24/7, and seats between 25-30 people depending on desired setup.

 

Room includes: 60" plasma monitor, PC/Mac/iPad hookups, DVD player and WiFi.

 

Rates: Prices vary from $35-$50 an hour, depending on use needs and day/time.
