SALMA: FILMING A POET IN HER VILLAGE NOW AVAILABLE FROM OR BOOKS!

Independent publishing company OR Books has just released SALMA: FILMING A POET IN HER VILLAGE, a unique literary project by Tamil poet Rajathi Salma and acclaimed documentarian Kim Longinotto! The book, which features personal anecdotes, production notes and original poetry, is the perfect companion to WMM's award-winning SALMA.

Kim Longinotto's latest feature, SALMA, premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and went on to successful screenings at Berlin International Film Festival and Hot Docs. As with her previous work (PINK SARISROUGH AUNTIESSISTERS IN LAW), master documentarian Kim Longinotto trains her camera on another iconoclastic woman. When Salma, a young Muslim girl in a south Indian village, was 13 years old, her family began holding her captive, forbidding her to study and forcing her into marriage. For the following 25 years, words were Salma's only salvation. She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper and, through an intricate system, was able to sneak them out of the house and into the hands of a publisher. Against all odds, Salma became the most famous Tamil poet, inciting her own freedom and challenging the traditional code of conduct in her village. Read more.
