FEATURED INSTALLATION
Spain-based Adamtec bought a six-station SPGPrints DSI digital UV-inkjet press to meet short-run demands from customers in the food, chemical, and auto industries. The 330-mm (13-in.) press features CMYK, white, and a digital primer. General Manager Jaume Crespo (pictured right with Carles Pastor, SPGPrints, and Francisco Hortelano, Adamtec), says, "From the trial results and the support from SPGPrints' technical people, it was clear DSI could give us the flexibility to offer variable data and the quality to deliver consistency and high-impact branding solutions on which our brand and customers depend. Another factor was the performance of SPG's inks, which gives us an opacity equivalent to screen printing and strong resistance needed for industrial situations." The press has standard intermittent LED pinning between each color station to ensure immediate curing and ink stability at fast speeds, and a chill drum to stabilize film substrates. Crespo adds, "With the acquisition...we will be able to print individualized labels in the same production run, which we believe is of great value to our customers, and therefore a strong growth area for us. Our automotive customers are seeking serialized battery labels and the ability to tailor information for each region."

I visited the Chicago Botanic Garden recently to see Alice the Amorphophallus, a rare titan arum in bloom. They are known as the corpse flower because when they do bloom, they smell like limburger cheese, smelly feet, and rotting fish. The nasty odor attracts the insects needed for pollination. But I just missed the big event; the leaves had closed by the time I got there. Believe it or not, I was kind of disappointed to miss it.
