COOL CONVERTED PRODUCT

ANDOVER, NJ | Sutherland Packaging, a manufacturer of corrugated point-of-purchase displays and packaging, offers precise, high-impact direct print technology for corrugated pallet skirts. Ideal for the retail consumer products market and club store displays, the five-color printing technology saves on material costs and shipping times. Direct print technology removes the need for a lithographic label to be applied over corrugated substrates, replacing litho dollars with just a few cents of ink. And whereas a typical pallet skirt may require four pieces of litho sheets to be glued together around the skirt, Sutherland's large format graphic presses simplify the process by enabling the entire skirt to be printed in one pass.

FEATURED INSTALLATION

Flint Group installed the nyloflex NExT Exposure FV platemaker at Kyoung Wha in South Korea, as the trade shop expands beyond corrugated into flexible packaging and labels. The nyloflex NExT exposure technology utilizes a high intensity UV-A LED light source to conduct rapid crosslinking of the photopolymer surface. The high UV-A output results in a virtual 1:1 image reproduction from the digital file to the finished plate. In flexible packaging, printing plates exposed with this technology allow excellent ink transfer. In corrugated, fluting will be reduced. For this purpose, the firm uses the nyloflex NEF plates, developed for this exposure technology. Jihoon Chung, director at Kyoung Wha, explains: "The plate formulation, which is tailor-made for LED exposure, enables a significantly faster processing of the printing plates. We realize a higher quality by the excellent reproduction of the finest details in the highlights. Besides that, our customers benefit from the outstanding printing stability of the plates--less cleaning stops are necessary, with the result of increased efficiency." PFFC CONFERENCES AT CPP EXPO

Kelly Robinson
Printing, coating, and laminating labels and packaging presents unique static control challenges. Static sparks can ignite flammable solvent vapors in the printing and coating enclosures. Sparks after coating the thin silicone release liner can damage the coating and cause release failures. The static charges on the sealed "inside" surfaces of laminated webs are trapped and cannot be neutralized. So, static control for printers, coaters, and laminators has three primary goals. First, eliminate sparks. Second, laminate charge free webs. Third, wind a charge-free roll so that your customers have no static problems. In this presentation, "Static Beat" columnist Kelly Robinson will discuss the common sources of charging in typical printing and laminating operation. He reviews best practices for installing static dissipators to suppress sparks and wind charge free finished rolls. Finally, he will present the measurements needed to verify good static performance and review static management procedures needed to insure good, long-term static performance.

On a recent trip to the Quad Cities for the River Roots Music and Rib Fest, I caught this tranquil shot of the mighty Mississippi River, but the local Ellis Kell Band sang about a time in 1965 when the river flooded downtown Davenport and Clinton, Iowa. Do you live in the area? Any firsthand memories of the flood? One of our friends recalled they closed the grammar schools so the kids could help make sandbags.
