Label Impressions, Orange, CA, is expanding its operations into 30,000 sq ft in the fourth quarter of this year, reports President/CEO Jeff Salisbury. But one thing that's not expanding is its carbon footprint. The label and flexpack converter is installing an onsite advanced energy storage system, which will decrease costs by optimizing energy use. In addition, the converter has bolstered its commitment to the environment with the addition of trim and matrix removal systems.

NEPA Carton and Carrier Co., a beverage carrier and carton converter in Moosic, PA, is installing a new KBA Rapida 145 57-in. six-color large-format press to provide additional speed, color control, and turnaround to its nationwide customers. "Our customers demand that their beer cartons are color consistent from run to run, whether it is three hours apart or three months apart from production," says Mike Collins, president. "We didn't have this capability before, but we will have the KBA ErgoTronic color control system on our new KBA Rapida 145. Plus, we'll enjoy the added benefits of faster speeds and shorter makeready times." In an effort to broaden its market, NEPA is designating its KBA Rapida 145 with a VariDry HL Blue IR/HA/UV drying system. "We've never had the ability to print with UV before," says Collins, "but we feel UV could allow us to move into new markets, such as high-end cosmetic packaging. Plus, it will assist us with our leadership role in the beverage carrier and carton industry by providing us with fast throughput due to its drying capabilities and higher quality."

PFFC CONFERENCES AT CPP EXPO

Competition for customer attention has stimulated the development of digital 3D enhancement methods for product packaging and printed advertising formats. The addition of 3D textures, finishes, metallic effects, and raised lettering and images capture and hold viewer attention and can convey the impression of higher product value. It can also produce Braille that complies with ADA requirements. This seminar will detail and evaluate the available equipment and systems in the market to digitally 3D enhance prints. It will also cite examples of where and how digital 3D enhancement technology is proving profitable.

Packaged food and drink consumption in Europe is projected to grow by 3% per annum to 953 billion packages by 2020, reports Smithers Pira. The growth of packaged food and drink consumption is driven by continuing growth in retail food packaging as well as a recovery in foodservice packaging markets.
