Local economic development officials are hoping to encourage more Richmond-area businesses to export their products and services to overseas markets, and a report due in June will help set a strategy for that.

Research for the strategic plan is being conducted by the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis at Virginia Commonwealth University and two local economic development groups - the Greater Richmond Partnership and Virginia's Gateway Region.

Many in this region have experienced job loss first hand. Systemic layoffs due to a company acquisition or merger, job cuts due to operational change, and facility closures are tools for business survival in the competitive global economy. Citizens compete regionally and globally for jobs as companies search for the lowest costs, a skilled and productive workforce, stable governmental policies, and any competitive advantage to maintain their place in the market.
